Ricci, first of all, congratulations on (and thank you! for) the fantastic content that you have been continuously providing us for years now. There are very few people out there who deliver content the way you do. Honest, unbiased, no hidden agenda, no need for drama, theatricals or a clickbait on every video. No problematizing needless stuff, just giving us your honest opinion, doing competent fact-finding and always putting content first over an incessant need for views. This channel has been a staple in my photography diet for quite some time now.
2) You asked me last year how long I'd wait for the Z8 to be released, and I answered "as long as it takes." Well, I pre-ordered one on the day of the official release.
3) I actually have a question for you: have you tried one of those Sony TOUGH cards? I've heard good things about it (even though they may not be so 'tough' as the name implies, but that they have very high read and write speeds, aren't quick to run hot, and do no fail). I don't recall you ever talking about this particular card, and I was wondering what your thoughts are on it. Incidentally, when you're out in the field, what's your go-to card? What do you usually have in your camera?
4) If others are reading this, please feel free to weigh in on this and let me know your thoughts as well on #3 above. I know this community has a lot to offer when it comes to first-hand experience.

I haven’t personally tried the Sony Tough CFe cards no.
I did have access to one for about 10 minuets but that obviously didn’t tell me much about it’s performance and heat management.
The people Iv spoken to who do use them have no raised any concerns though 😊

As a matter of fact a CZcams channel called The CameraVille made a video showing that the Sony card ran the hottest. The Angelbird did very well.
It's a shame for me because I only use Sandisk and Sony SD cards but even the Sandisk is one of the lowest performers on CFe.

I saw another video in overheating and won’t mention the Chanel name , but his tests were very different and never any mention about some cards running hotter or colder , on the z9 it might not be as much and issue but having the right cards on the z8 seems like it’s a wise choice to choose the right cards . Great test and looking forward to Matt’s video also 👍🏼

Another great video. I was not aware of the difference between hot and cold running cards. Before seeing this video I have ordered a Lexar card but will now change to a Delkin Black. Thanks for increasing my knowledge!

Very helpful! To put this all in perspective. The everage time you can get maximum attention from somebody is 7 minutes. 20 minutes of looking at the V-bloggers face in one go is the maximum I can digest. My old Nizo (Braun) super 8 camera recorded approx 9 min per cartridge. We were taught that max scene length is 20 seconds, before it get boring.

So the "heat issue" is solely about long takes in video - at high frame rate and bit depth. Well, that's a relief for all of us stills photographers. Thanks for clearing things up. You're a trusted source of dependable information and I appreciate your videos.
It'll be something that I and many others will never have to worry about. I think I've done maybe 3 hours of video since my D90 days with the longest clip possibly 4 minutes, it's the photo side I'm excited about.
A very thorough analysis. I wonder if setting the temperature warning limit to HIGH will damage the internal electronic components of the camera on the long run, though.

I assume that would be the case yes but there are a lot more steps you could take including the heat cut off if needed

Great spot on video - very informative - is it safe to run the camera with Temperature cut out set to High ? (Can't see the temp in Nikon URL's mentioning how high the cut off is at high / standard states 25c / 75f ). - could it shorten the electronics in the camera or could it cause damage to the CFE Card ?

I know it seems silly to use one, when you have a CF Express slot.. but the Z8 does have two slots, and my computer has an SD slot.. It would be interesting to test those same card with the Z9, and make a comparison about overheating depending on whether it is the Z8 or Z9, that way video folks can make an informed choice on which to purchase.

As I know you have been testing a lot of different brands of CFExpress type B memory card, I would like to know if you have any good recommendations for a fast CFexpress type B card reader, that doesn't overheat the memory cards? I currently have the Nikon 660GB CFexpress type B memory card and found that my Transcend RDE2 card reader is pedestrian slow to download. :) It's even slower than my old Lexar XQD cards and card reader. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
Great review & comparison tests. I just subscribed to the channel. I'm weighing purchasing options between these two cameras, mainly due to the weight of the Z9. Could you do another heat test using the large capacity cards in the 1 TB & above class with respect to 8K recording at various FPS & recording modes? I plan to be shooting more video than stills & would not want to keep swapping cards or recording to another device after 20 or so minutes. Also, how much difference does the data transfer speed of the card make? Can we assume the higher the transfer speed the more potential to overheat or is this incorrect? My last question is, would there have been a longer recording time before heat warnings if you had allowed it to cool down for a few minutes? And if so, any idea what that would take in terms of how long it rested between recordings?

VERY important video! I am buying the Nikon Z 8 and will BUY a Delkin Black 150 GB as that is what I could afford and a Sandisk SDHC V 90 128 GB. I am using the Z 9 AND the Z 8 for LESS demanding nature and wildlife uses. I do USE a Nikon D7500 with the Nikon D lens 200-500 f 5.6 with quite excellent results with the one SanDisk memory card. I am using MORE video on the Z 9 and intend to on the Z 8. Wish Nikon would get the 180-600 variable aperture lens out in Z fairly soon and HOPE it is a great as the 200-500 f 5.6.
Riccii, thank you for your great review. I shot an 8K 60fsp Raw video, but the camera stopped after 20 minutes due to overheating. is there any tip cool-down during shot an 8k??

Certainly black I currently do not own any power cards
I’m tempted to ask you to do a test using various iterations of the en-el14 battery but as I’ve already ordered the camera I don’t think it can be described as a “deciding factor” for me. The iteration, age and demanded use of each of my batteries will affect this so I think it will probably be personal to every individual. Hopefully my z8 arrives to use for wedding season.
Still looks superb hybrid in any case - good backup to Z9 ( apart from different batteries - would be nice with Grip could be done to use EN-EL18's) and (if it safe). Even though got Z9 use mixture of 1080P (for fun stuff), most stuff use 4K 30-120 FPS, if I have need for 8K probably do 8K 30 FPS MP4 but good that if you use right Card (Anglebird ), turn temp setting to High can use 8K 60 FPS - probably try this on my Z9 for serious stuff in future
I would love to see what the thermal solution is under the Z8 body. What they have used and if it seems like a standard cooling solution or if it could be improved.

Hello Ricci, I know that I did see Matt Grangers test when he point out this. But it is good to see the difference with different card makes. On a side issue/question is FPS like for the Z9 to get the best FPS you have to have the right card? Keep well, keep safe and thank you for all your videos.
FPS as such are not affected, since any compatible card will get you through the first second of sequential shooting; different cards may give you different burst duration (no. of shots per burst), though. Sidenote: burst duration (buffer filling time) may also be affected if you use an SD card for backup when shooting.
Hi Ricci - many thanks to you and Matt for performing these test. AND for setting out the parameters you used so clearly - this means we can all replicate these tests and confirm to our own satisfaction how our gear and cards perform relative to yours. I assume you were using Standard Quality video and oversampling etc were all disabled (not that they work at the highest formats).
Your point about the card really matter is well made -- I would note that you were not using the fastest nor coolest cards in these tests either -- this an observation not a criticism. Clearly use of the UHS-II SD even with a V90 compliant card will vastly throttle what can be shot and the speed the camera can off load images or footage.
Since the x2.0 standard for CFE-B cards was adopted many leading manufacturers have released ultra-fast and even cooler running cards than those you used. For example, Delkin Black updated their range to newer faster cooler cards than the 512GB now the 650GB AND there are new brands also now available -- like Sabrent's Rocket XXIT (2TB which I use). Angelbird's AV PRO 2.0 is faster, cooler and at up to 4TB larger than the card you are using in these tests. Nikon should update their approved and recommended card list AND their own cards, which are no longer in the top tier.
It would be very helpful if you, or Matt or others did perform battery life tests - but I would also like to see guidance on how to save power -- like turning the brightness of the EVF/LCD down and the camera off when not using it.
As you noted for the majority of us it is the battery life and Nikon's recording time limit restrictions that would limit any recording -- but more important only a very few folk would plan a shoot with very very long takes. One shoots a scene often multiple takes and always in multiple points of view - wide and close, on each character etc. When I shoot wildlife action a single take is typically measured in a few seconds -- even long takes normally do not exceed 5-10 minutes. So beyond a very few scientists and astronomers I do not understand the desire to shoot for ultra long duration single record times.
I tested Delkin black 512gb against the newer Delkin Black 650gb saw about a 10 second improvement so didn’t really deem that a necessary mention it could easily fall in to sample variation.
I am however very excited about the memory cards coming out this year for sure

Were you shooting HQ or Normal?
Do codex other than N-RAW require more processing and result in other limits -- 4.1k 60p ProRes Raw HQ 12-bit N-LOG seems to be hungry and do some other codex.

My use case: occasionally shooting multicam live performances in a single take of 1 hour or even a bit more. As an amateur videographer I cannot justify dedicated video camera's of comparable quality for this job alongside to my photography work. Now I already use Z6 camera's with external recorder for this.
On the other hand, shooting such long takes in RAW would come at a very high cost in CFexpress cards of 2TB or more.
Hence my hopes that Nikon would enable SSD's on the USB-C port for video recording.
The most sensible option is probably to forget about 8K and RAW for this kind of work. 🙂
@@jhnbervoets -- I strongly advise you to plan for points at which you stop recording - then start up again - with new card and batteries as needed. It is far far better to have footages saved for each track/song than just to run run and run.
The question for you is what format codex fps do you need to shot with shoot with: based on these tests I expect that the Z8 will have NO issues shooting 4.1K 30p HQ N-RAW N-LOG until the battery runs out or you hits the Z8's recording limit when shooting to a Delkin Black 650GB card; let alone a 2TB card of equal speed and cold running.
You will have to change the battery (unless you are using Power Delivery), restart the record and/or change the card when shooting this long anyway.
If you need to shoot even longer sequences at such high res/codex/fps then pick the Z9, which shoots up to and beyond the 125 mins limit with almost all formats/codex. Right tool for the job.
Look at Matt Irwin's vid when it is up - he uses Power Delivery to eliminate the battery from the equation.
AND no pro-body MICL camera writes directly onto an SSD (yes I know about the legg-camera and just look at the formats it can shoot) and also those that have tried the dummy CFE with ribbon to a NVME SSD have found it very fragile and eats power.
Far far better to just buy a few more suitable cards -- cheaper and safer in the long run.
These subjects have been covered at length on DP Review Forum for the Z system -- join the debate over there. We have a similar discussion on BCG where a group for Video/Cine shooters has recently been created.
As others have noted the sooner more and more of us get to own, use and test Z8 bodies the better -- but please also precisely replicate Ricci and the Matts's tests to verify their results as well. The more robust data out there the better.
@@AndyMillerPhotoUK -- Thanks for your advice. Actually I shoot with 3 (stationary) camera's in 4K 25fps DNxHR 4:2:2 10 bit recording on Atomos recorders (with SSD) and a separate audio recorder (all time code synced) and on external power. Up until now (fingers crossed), I never had any file corruption or other problem with my 1 hour long clips.
As a single operator the less I have to deal with starting-stopping camera's and changing cards & batteries during a show, the better. I use the higher resolutions to crop into scenes in post production (1080p export format) as I am not able to operate 3 camera's at the same time 🙂 8K might give me even more flexibility in post.
That's my way, as an amateur on a relatively low budget but who wishes to deliver a good quality, of dealing with this situation.
Thanks for making this video. In the last couple tests after you switched the heat setting you said heat wasn’t a problem anymore, that the battery died and it could have gone on recording. I noticed that the hot card and temp warnings , even the red one turned on still quite early, so my question is what damage is being done, or could be done if you continue filming this way repeatedly. I sense an early grave for the camera in this case. Nikon should have been upfront about this. I heard all over that the Z9 doesn’t have this problem at all and I would have strongly considered getting it instead. I didn’t want a bigger camera, but this over heating make the camera useless for what I shoot (sporting events), so would have chosen Z9 if I knew before.
I cannot imagine ever needing a single continuous shot to endure as long as the Z8 takes to overheat but knowing that card brands make as much difference as this is useful. As luck would have it, I use Angelbird SE cards in my Z9 and only wish the Z8 was sufficiently different to convince me once and for all to place an order.

Do you happen to know what the highest capacity cfxpress card is that would work with 8k raw recording? Do you think bigger capacity cards heat up more quickly?
Maybe we can show the correlation between writing speeds and the temperatures because if the correlation is there, then we can easily gauge if a card will overheat just by looking at the write speeds.
With the cutoff temp set to High, do you think there is danger of damaging internal components of the Z8 by essentially forcing it to run hot far longer than it would otherwise? What about warranty impact? While I wait for mine to arrive and don't have a manual to reference, this was something I was curious about.
My thoughts would be (No). As long as that option was given by the camera then it shouldn't effect the warranty so it shouldn't effect camera life (maybe on the very long term but at that time with such abuse this camera would be part of history)
Do you have the same comparison for the Z9 camera to see the difference between the Z9 and Z8 in terms of heat issues?

Great video. I don't think I'll be recording too much 8k when my z8 arrives but it's good to know it performs well in thermal management. Does having the screen pulled out make a big difference on temps?
I would happily say that yeh having the screen out probably does make a difference
as it allows more airflow closer to the back of the sensor. Not tested that though!

You say about the cards getting hot how about the battery it's right next to them does it still overheat with the battery moved away from the cards with the MB-N12 the Z9 doesn't have an overheating problem but the batteries are located elsewhere.
it's a bit late to comment here but, what happens if you attach mb-n12 and record video? does it have any effect on overheat warning? I heard using external power bank via PD charging helps prevent overheating as the battery wouldn't get as much hot.
Hi Ricci, you are no doubt aware of the service advisory for the Z8 regarding the lens mount problem. Could you please do a video describing the problem, how likely it is to occur on the affected batches and whether we need to rush to send our cameras in for repair when we have no symptoms? People are getting upset and a calm voice like yours would be re-assuring since we've all spent a lot of money on our cameras and don't really want to have them ripped apart if it's not necessary right now. I sold my Z6 and Z7 to buy the Z8, I have no camera to use when it's away for repair either so a turnaround estimate would be nice. Cheers, Peter

I am using lexar platinum card. I noticed the hot card warning around 20 minutes of 4K recording.
Off topic but, does anybody know if the Z8 comes with z7ii or z9 style bracketing?
I often shoot 2-shot bracketing on my z7ii ("normal" exposure and one extra -3ev exposure to retain hotspots) and with the z9 i always have to take a useless long exposure since it only has 3 and 5 steps.
Also I wish Z9 firmware could be updated to have the full range of bracketing options.
I recently bought an Angelbird cfexpress type b 1TB card and my Z8, 8k 60 nraw, filled it in 37 minutes. The camera gave a red hot camera warning around 27 minutes, the camera gave hot card warning around 25 minutes. The recording didnt stop. I was using usb pd.
Does the temperature change when using external power instead of the battery?
Z9 veterans, need your input/help here. I can only afford really fast type B cards at around 512-650 GB sizes. Everything maxed out would give around at least 12minutes on those cards. But I've heard if you switch the video quality from High to Normal you probably can extend the shooting duration. Is there really a huge difference between high and nomal quality?
Is this video sped up just a little bit? I ask because Ricci's pitch sounds just a tiny bit high.
Unfortunately those Delkin Black cards are extremely hard to get in Germany. I wanted to get a Lexar Professional Diamond in the beginning for my Z8... But it seems, as if this card will run too hot too fast. I think that's because of the high write rates... I think I will try my cheap Integral UltimaPro X2 CFE card first...
What bracket and tripod are you using?
What diff Delkin black in no. 2 just 35min but Delkin black in no. 4&5 can survive more than 1 hour?

What L bracket are you using?
I have my Z8 since today and I have a problem. If I try to record a video 8.3k@60 fps N-RAW, after 3 second interrupt "Recording interrupted! Please wait." The memory card (SanDisk Extreme Pro CFexpress 128 GB) has been format in the body. If I use the memory card with my Z7II, works well. Any ideas?
I had the Z8 with a Sandisk 512GB CFexpress card and switched to a Delkin 1.3 TB. Overheating indications by the camera with 4k 120 HDR videos moved from ca. 12-13 minutes to 18 minutes.
Does someone know if the 1.3 TB Delkin performs the same as the 512GB in the Video shown at 5:40?
And what about SDcards? They can also be used, are they the better choice for Video?
PS, with 4k 60 Fps I didn't have issues at all so far.

Ricci, I have few questions:
1. Recommended external battery source to avoid heat or dead of internal battery soon and to record extended time
2. Can I record 8K and 4K N-Raw and 10- bit to Ninja V also over HDMI?
3. Can Z8 record directly to an external SSD (2TB or 4TB) for extended time just to avoid any heating on the Cfex B card?
4. I can record the CFex B card (1TB or 2 TB) when I use a gimbal or for a short period of time
2. Camera does not send NRAW or ProRes RAW over HDMI. 4K 10-bit ProRes is fine.
3. Not over USB, but Zatay makes a ~$200 CFe to NVME adapter.
4. 90 minutes, if the battery/media last that long.

I generally always recommend Delkin black unless you don’t need speed for stills or video
So if you shoot 1 image at a time or slow fps
And shoot lower quality video a power card will be fine

If you refer to the temp testing link in description I would say no they run pretty hot.
That being said
I don’t have sandisk cards to test directly tho and I’m sure they will work as they are fast enough just be aware of the heat they generate.
Hi Ricci, i have preordered the Z8 & 400mm f4.5. I have switched from Sony, missed the D850 & 200-500mm f5.6 a lot for past 2 years😢. I just want to know is the ProGrade Cobalt 165 GB card good enough (in terms of over heating)for some small wildlife clips in 4K120, 4k24p at 10 or 8 bit and 20 fps Lossless Raw shooting. I shoot under hot temperatures 37-45C in national parks/tiger reserves of India.

You should be ok but your ambient temps are high if you check the heat test link in the description the pro grade cards still run warmer than the Delkin Black cards
You could look at a Delkin Black 150gb card if you want what appears to be the best performance/ heat memory card

The other Matt (Granger) reported overheating after shorter intervals. Was this card related or different methodologies?
I dnt know his testing but as I wanted to show here the difference with different memory cards can be pretty big so it could be the memory card used
Was digging through the menus of my Z8 today and found that the camera warns that "Image quality may decrease" when using the higher temperature threshold. Any idea what that means in practical terms? Like, does it disable extended over sampling, or drop frames, or does it mean a permanent decrease in quality from heat damage to the sensor, etc.
Sensor produces more noise as it gets hotter
Why is there a Standard and High temperature cut off? Is the integrity of the electronics the issue,or user comfort to touch?
Heat increases sensor noise.

3 legged thing … no z6 will not fit
I think it's a 3 legged thing universal L bracket.
The potential problem is not only OVER-heating but also heating at all. For astrophotography too many hot pixels is a no go as well as shot noise.
