I woke up two weeks ago and wanted to sail around the world. Tired of my life and the risk I have not taken.Which lead me to watching this. Paul is an incredible person and Incredible people live incredibly. Maybe one day I will get my one way ticket to freedom but for now I really appreciate the connections the relationships and the people that contribute to my life. Even though I am not an incredible person, I do have people in my life that are.

God bless all the friends this man has.

Our ancestors were tribal. None of us was ever expeceted to be alone at the end. Philosophy of "individualism" ( root "divide") has become dominent priority to the detriment of our society..

I’ve realized there is no right or wrong way to live. I went the opposite, wife of 30 years , two great kids. And recently my wife just woke up and decided she doesn’t want this life anymore. Not the kids , not the world we built , nothing. So you can do it all right and end up alone. It really is a roll of the dice. At least he doesn’t have to resent people who ruined it for him.

So many damn questions, lol: 1. How the hell did you manage to get so many candid shots of Paul? You must be a completely different kind of cinematographer - the serene shots from far a way to the intimate scenes of paul Day Dreaming on the boat - so good. 2. Can we all chip in to get paul a new engine? 3. Did you guys notice the ball on Pauls side - hes got to get that checked out, lol! 4. Can we give props to that wonderful man who tried to fix Pauls engine (Gus).... what a kind and generous human. 5. Im so curious about all of Paul's many children, lol but mostly the little blond guy in all his photos. Is it worth trying to get them in touch. It appears he is i. So much pain and yearns for a connection. 6. Aounr 19:36 Paul discusses with Gus the poor condition of his boats engine - Im not sure if this was intentional but wow, what a wonderful metaphor for Paul and whats happening in his life. Could th engine be a sort of metaphor for Pauls heart? Once it gives out, this long journey has come to an end. What beautifully done documentary. Thank you so much for making this

I spent 10 years in the Virgin Islands around just such drunkards. I worked as a mason and later became a plumber and stared my own business. I had four sailboats, culminating in my dream yacht. All was accomplished by saving my money and keeping focused on my dreams, while I watched these pathetic old drunks and drug addicts waste away and die. Yes I had fun; wine, women and song, but I never wanted to go out like depicted here. When it was my time and I had enough water pass under my keel I sailed away and settled down on terra firma in the wilds of east Hawaii and run three small businesses. This is a cautionary tale about bad choices, excess, addiction, and the pride of ego. The thing this video doesn’t transfer luckily is their smell. They all smelled like piss and death. Kids, live your dreams, and live your fantasies, because you only live once, but don’t stay at the party too long or you’ll lose the plot.

It’s honest. Heard one guy saying his grandfather at the end to.d him right at the last your conscience is very active and brings up all the things where you went wrong. It’s a lot to deal with suddenly, his gran advised him to deal with it now while he can and not wait.

Thanks for the documentary. I admired Paul Johnson and his Venus designs when I read about him in the 70s. I too dreamed of sailing oceans and designed and built my own vessel which I sailed to the South Pacific but the practical side took over and I considered our children first about which I have no regrets. I always wanted to return to the sea but life kinda got in the way. My book A Passion for Sailing is an anthology of my stories. I am sad that Paul has spent these last years mostly lonely and having regrets about the decisions he made. When you’ve reached the height of crossing an ocean the choice is to do it again (and again as Paul did) or give it away, move on and find something else to do. I wonder how many of those 70s sailing adventurers/vagabonds are still out there?

Typical lost man rant. Only Christ can make you free! But like most- he is too proud to accept Gods solution to the curse on this old ball of dirt.

Really loved your film! I’m not a part of their community and I’m still in my early 30s but hopefully I’ll get out there in a couple years. The feeling of loneliness and regret I saw in the old man is haunting and makes me question some of my past relationships and decisions.

A legend in the sailing world

I must say that is one of the best directed, shot and edited documentaries I've ever seen. Sail on Paul! I'm right behind you.

I watched this twice now. There are a few old guys like him still out there. I spent some time anchored solo on my sailboat in that same sleepy bay. One night was enough.

Died at the age of 83 pretty good going. this documentary is a sad tribute quite a powerful meditation..... Half a bottle of rum is equal to two bottles of red wine quite excessive in terms of alcohol content. I think he. had enough of life quite a decent age

sadly he ended up as a somewhat functioning alcoholic, very melancholic

The cinematography is absolutely fantastic in this and the audio track is even better. When Johnson and Andrew are sat at the bar talking you can hear the abience of the chatter and the music in the background - fantastic

Moving documentary

Wonderful

He chose to live in poverty, didn't have a single relationship that lasted, saved nothing, had a bunch of kids he never supported, and now he's lamenting being an old man on a dilapidated boat, drinking vodka alone, relying on the kindness of strangers, and wondering if, perhaps, he'd been selfish. I prefer this story arch rather than glorifying his past exploits and ignoring the details.

I had the privilege to live and work around Paul, he was one crazy mother fucker but a wealth of knowledge! I worked on S/V Breath out of St. John USVI and got to get to know this legend first hand! Wouldn’t give up that experience for anything!

This movie is well done in itself but it is hardly a story of Paul’s life. It barely discusses his adventures sailing the world and visiting islands and other countries. It also doesnt really talk about his boat building trade which seemed extensive. Overall its a pretty depressing film about an old sailor on his last days and leaves the viewer wanting to know more about his life. Was there ever a book written about him? He should have written a bibliography.
