Chris Dale's Military Museums & History
Registrace 25. 01. 2020
I enjoy the study of military history and I love museums. On this channel I've filmed some of the military museums and sights that I've been lucky enough to visit. These videos are only intended as a quick look around the museum galleries with limited and quiet commentary from myself. They are not a close-up, well focused examination of all the museum's collections in detail and perfect lighting. Maybe they're just enough for you to decide if you want to visit and and examine the museum's collection in more detail yourself. I hope they inspire you to go and see more museums in general.

A visit is highly recommended.

As you said, some exhibits were removed for the construction. The Lancaster bomber 'G for George', Japanese midget sub and a short film by Peter Jackson on planes in the First World War. While Mephisto was on loan to the memorial for a period, I believe it's back in Queensland. The construction area when you were going down stairs was where the pre WW1 exhibit was if I remember correctly. I hope you were able to do a free guided tour off camera, the insight they provide is amazing.
Thanks for that extra information Greg!
NOT pure coincidence! numbers matter! theres a synchronous connect!!
Of course it's possible that the world is ruled by numerical connection. I have seen the A as standing for Austria or Armistice sometimes, but of course that only works for English speakers, not the Austrians or Bosnians. Also why the date of the Western Front armistice particuarly? Of course that date was of major importance to the Western Powers but not so much in the Blakns and former KuK empire. Wouldn't it be equally spooky if it named the date of the St. Germain treaty when Austria-Hungary singed the peace, or Versailles Treaty? Or even Gavrillo's birth date or death date, or Franz Ferndinand's birth date, or the date of the A-H ultimatum to Serbia, or the A-H attack on Serbia or any other numbers of dates that could be considered to be notable? Or maybe the manufacturer only made a small number od cars and designated them all, 11 11 11, then 11 11 12 and this was the eight car or eighteenth if he started with 11 11 01? It is interesting specualtion though and thanks for your comment?
@@chrisdale-militaryhistory >> you bet! I just have fun with numbers; math as magic!
synchronicity! re numbers>>> the plate of the auto FF was riding in reads: A III I8...or A for Armistice; II is eleven>> II is for November; and of course ((19)) 18...strange, eh?

Another interesting piece Mr. Dale 👌
Thanks mate, so glad you're enjoying them!
Australian WW1 official war historian, C E W Bean, packed up and sent many many crates of original artefacts back with a view to creating a museum. Every conflict since has seen the same process.
Thanks for that extra peice of information, much appreciated.
George Cross awarded For Valor - same prestige as the Victoria Cross but not in a war zone. Rarer than the VC. Very few originals not held by the museum.
Pillboxes ,those that are left were ,I think positioned on road/rail junctions (through route from Welsh coast?) In south England they tended to be built with defensive lines in mind to keep the big cities safe
Yes mate, totally makes sense. But there's no big cities to defend West of Lampeter. Maybe to defend the docks at Fishguard and Pembroke? But even they'd be pretty redundant if Bristol and Birmingham had already gone. Also note it's on the west side of the Teifi, so it's not like their plan was to defend against a landing on the West Welsh coast, or they'd have put it on the Cwmann side.
I am shocked that British fighters had to give their lives for the Russian Japanese war. Nobody talked about that growing up.
Thank you for educating me on my mothers homeland.
Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it. Feel free to subscribe for more.
Enjoyed watching this video thankyou.
Thank you for watching, I've got plans to visit the sites of more Welsh history soon.
That looks great some amazing uniforms in there
Yes, I was quite surprised by the variety of their collection too.
Is this part 1 of a three part series on the old estates of Lampeter? Maesyfelin and the only remaining one, Falcondale,
It could become one next time I'm up there. I did have a look around modern Maesyfelin of course there's nothing left of the old manor house there but there is a curious old cottage on the corner of Mill street called Y Felin. So as its name suggests this I guess this would have been the old millhouse of the estate. Can't see anything else left of it. Do you know any more about it?
Very interesting Chris
Thanks mate, we must have played around there as kids...
Old man
Fun fact: When the German soldiers had to go home, they had to walk all the way to Germany, that's what soldiers do/did. Nobody wanted revenge attacks on the Germans, so they were allowed to keep their personal arms (Pistols, submachine guns, rifles). When entering the German border, they had to hand over their weapons to the British soldiers. As far as I know, it went smooth. Strange to think, that the much hated German was allowed to keep their guns. But it worked.
Thanks for that information, very interesting.
I fought in the Cold War (78-79). We were bloody good. We beat the Soviets all the time. 😅
😆😆😆
I am irish hardly know it myself must go up one of the days.I have heard commenters on videos recommend it.
It's really well worth a visit. I was amazed by the display.
i think the swedish tank was there because they served alongside the irish in the congo.Ireland was neutral during the spanish civil war but there was a good bit of involvement of irish volunteers on both sides.,but as ireland was very catholic at the time most were on the nationalist side, but many were with the international brigade on the republican side..
The Irish Defence Forces bought several Swedish tanks and armoured cars in the late 1930's in an attempt to build up an elementary armoured force. These vehicles have nothing to do with Irish or Swedish service in ONUC/UNOC
Visited this musem a year ago. I spent several hours touring the place. I loved how modern and interactive their exhibition was.
They used to have thousands of firearms on exhibit, from medieval times to present day, probably the biggest cellection in the world with public access. But some museum type found them boring and unsuitable for a war museum and most were scrapped 😵💫
That's a terrible shame. It's a large museum, they definitely have the space to display more.
Their Afganistan exhibition is really good.
Bonus points for the Welrod spotted in the wild in the WW2 section!
Great books! If you love history these are for you!
Thanks for making this mate 👍 I'll have to visit with my boys when I'm down there next. I wanted an idea of how big it was and what they had as I'm used to Duxford and the one in Elephant and Castle, but this looks perfect 😎👍
So glad you liked the video. It's not a massive museum but well worth a visit!

That's a great looking museum. I hope you had a good trip
Thanks mate. That was certainly the highlight of the trip!
Great Museum! Very good Video! Thank you very much!
Thank you, yes it's an amazing museum. It was even better than I'd hoped.
I'm thinking of visiting Oslo later this year. This museum is on my to do list.
It's well worth a look!
You should also check out the excellent Danish Resistance Museum in Copenhagen.
Thanks for the tip. I'm hopefully visiting Copenhagen next month so I'll check it out if I get a chance.
Absolutely Jaw Dropping ! One of my prized possessions as a very poor and neglected adolescent was an Osprey Men At Arms softcover book The South Wales Borderers at this time the film Zulu Dawn came out on HBO and I back then and still do go apeshit for everything and anything Zulu War. Those displayed Rorkes Drift Victoria Crosses are replicas BECAUSE authentic Victoria Crosses are molded and cast from the cannons from the Crimean War on the Crimean Peninsula. I hope the orginal cannon metal still exists for current and future Victoria Cross heroes I believe the Roarkes Drift engagement is the single most crosses that were ever awarded simultaneously. I don't have to mention that Michael Caine in the Zulu film is the greatest war film ever made ALONG with the greatest movie score ever conducted.
I had that same Osprey book and it was a great inspiration to me too.
Went here recently myself, great exhbition!
SIR....Just on your Right as you walk through the Gates is the 'Old' Headstone from my Great Grandfathers Grave...JOHN WILLIAM FIELDING V.C. The replacement now stands proud at the head of John's resting place just inside the gate of St. Michael & All Angels Church...Llantarnam, Nr. Cwmbran. The ORIGINAL V.C. is now held under secure Lock and Key, with 3 other Victoria Crosses, at Brecon. I had the privilege of meeting with Zulu King GOODWILL ZWELITHINI on the 21st July 2019, never to be forgotten....Stay safe..G.A.R.
Thank you very much for that extra information about your great grandfather!
During the first world war, the South Wales Borders were recruiting in Colwyn Bay, Conwy, and other towns, and training soldiers at Kinmel Park, in North Wales. My Taid served in Basra, during the first world war, with the South Wales Borderers, and was living in Colwyn Bay, when he was recruited. Of course being born in December 1897, he was officially to young to join, but the recruitment officers were paid per man who they signed up, so wrote down 19, if they gave an age that was younger.
Thanks for sharing that interesting family history.
Rubbish video....
Good video but please move the camera much more slowly next time, please. A little narration would have been nice.
Thanks for the comment, I'll try to improve on future videos.
The Exhibits were not viewable due to Fast camera movement 😢
Sorry I can't film everything in detail. I'm just hoping to give you a quick look at what they have on display.
@@chrisdale-militaryhistory Thank You 😀👍👍
So that was where the first World War really got started.
Been there. Didn't spend a lot of time, had to go visit rellies. Your doco flashes past everything too quickly.
Thanks for the comments, I'll take note and slow down in future videos.
In common with a lot of these museum videos it tried to show to much in a short time which ends up the viewer sees very little such a shame as there seems to be a large and varied collection!!
very interesting, nice one
Thanks glad you liked it. It was a real suprise of a museum to me.
Just a point, South Wales Borderers did not fight at Rorkes Drift, It was the B Company of 24th Regt of Foot (2nd Warwickshires). Rorkes Drift took place in 1879 and they weren't amalgamated with the South Wales Borderers until 1881.
My goodness this place hasn’t changed since I was 11 years old. I am 40 now. 😅. Very happy memories of this place and my many visits during my childhood.
From Wiki The film Zulu (1964), produced by Stanley Baker, portrays the Battle of Rorke's Drift.[58] The film received generally positive reviews from the critics. Some details of the film's account are, however, historically inaccurate (for example, in the movie the regiment is called the South Wales Borderers, but the unit was not in fact called that until two years after the battle, although the regiment had been based at Brecon in South Wales since 1873).[59] While most of the men of the 1st Battalion, 24th Regiment of Foot (1/24) were recruited from the industrial towns and agricultural classes of England, principally from Birmingham and adjacent southwest counties, only 10 soldiers of the 1/24 that fought in the battle were Welsh. Many of the soldiers of the junior battalion, the 2/24, were Welshmen.[60] Of the 122 soldiers of the 24th Regiment present at the Battle of Rorke's Drift, 49 are known to have been of English nationality, 32 were Welsh, 16 were Irish, one was a Scot, and three were born overseas. The nationalities of the remaining 21 are unknown.[61]
Looks like a great museum with some amazing items
Thanks. Yes, it's well worth a visit!
Clearly a fantastic museum to tour despite the speed. If it can be viewed at one tenth the speed would be spot on mate
My videos are only intended as a brief view, sorry I can't do them at a tenth the speed. This video is over 18mins, ten times the length would be three hours and more.
The stuart and the general lee / grant tanks are great survivors in our country, a good number survive throughout australia!

I'm sure you'll enjoy the visit.
