Which famous artist had friends like Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Madonna? That would be the one and only Jean- Michel Basquiat.
The once homeless teen runaway went on to sell paintings for $25k when he was just 20 years old and had a piece sell in 2017 for an all time record high at auction for an American artist. His quick, but powerful career is still inspiring artists today. Find out why!
Hope you enjoy this video while we celebrate Black History Month!

He was truly a genius in his own right. Love his work. It's a shame he passed. 🙏
Completely agree. I'm still amazed by what he accomplished in such a short amount of time. Thanks for watching and the feedback!
Thank you for creating this! Can never have enough Basquiat!
Super appreciate the feedback! I feel the exact same way. I could do an hour long episode on his short, but powerful life. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
New York in the late 70’s early 80’s was a thrilling place to be, and Basquiat was at the center of it. A true legend.
We love You Basquiat✌💯🖤🖤🖤
He was not African American. He was of Caribbean and Puerto Rican decent. Still love him tho ✊🏿
Eko IKO lol! I know this as well...but he is Caribbean American... would I be Jamaican if both of my parents were from the United States, but I grew up in Jamaica? His father is Haitian, and his mother is black Pueto Rican.
Eko IKO So your saying African American is a nationality? Not a specific black ethnic group with their own culture?
Eko IKO I know of the Gullah Gechee (I have ancestry from there) and the Caribbean mass migration, but recent generation of Caribbeans and Caribbean Americans don’t claim African American ancestry unless it’s something they can use to look good, but they hate being called Black american and often say we don’t have culture and are white washed. They don’t want anything to do with us...so why claim them?
Eko IKO I know this.. But what counts as an African American? Those who grow up in the culture....or directly descend from the culture.
Eko IKO only because they don’t see us as African people. They see us as white washed.
The big-name personalities of the 27 club are usually larger than life and are some of the most iconic artists in popular culture. It’s quite a fascinating phenomenon
At 00:02:50, Warhol had no connections to Downtown 81. This was a Glenn O'Brien (of TV Party fame). I think Marisol, and some other "arty" types produced this expository film. It's not a groundbreaking film but if JMB is the focus from which one becomes immersed into the Now Wave/New York scene of the late 1970s--early 1980s, then you'll want to watch it.
One might find themselves re-watching it, because it's loaded with iconography and icons of that period. For example, John Lurie, Lee Quinones, Fab-5 Freddy, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, as well as the gang from the Mudd Club.
I absolutely loved the video! Thanks for sharing❤️
Awesome, so great to hear! I loved putting this together. Had to be done! Thanks for watching, sharing, and the feedback!
Here from the Troy Ave interview on No Jumper. He introduced this artist to his children. Epic work. Gold from a slightly different dimension. Good shit

So great to hear! Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
@@artrageousnate anytime more content I’ll keep tuning in Basqiate is my guy
Dope man
Cool video. Unfortunately the photo you included isn’t Al Diaz. That’s Glenn O'Brien, an early champion of Basquiat’s work who went on to become a writer and who died in 2017.
A great man.
Thanks for this piece
Absolutely, it’s so great to know people are appreciating his amazing story. Thanks for the feedback!
Wow
Thanks, enjoyed!
Glad to hear it!
Club 27...
Thanks for the content
No problem! Super appreciate the feedback and support. 👍
Great video about a very talented artist Basquiat, excellent.
Thanks, super appreciate the feedback! I love the work of Basquiat, and putting this together was an honor. Appreciate the support!
Great video, thanks for posting. It’d be nice if you could go into further depth into the characteristics and highlights of neoexpressionism, why was it so remarkable?
Thanks so much! And, yes, I would have loved to dig even deeper into neoexpressionism. However, that would require its own episode! Trying to keep these under 8 minutes it nearly impossible! Thanks for the feedback, and for subscribing!
What is neo expressionism?
“Boom for Real!”
Check out the movie "All the Streets are Silent", about Hip Hop and Skateboarding in NYC 1987-1997.
Interesting, I've never heard of it. I'll definitely check it out. Thanks for watching and the feedback!
That pic of “Al Diaz” is definitely Glenn O’Brien
Thanks u saved my grade!!!
Mine to

Indeed I did! Thanks for listening to the book, and for checking out my channel!
at 2:16 thats not al diaz - thats, glenn obrian, a friend, from, tv party.
Should I know who Steven Cohen is?
I’m here for school lol
However you got here, I love it! Be sure to thank your teacher for me;) I also imagine watching my episodes isn’t the worst thing you could be asked to do in school.👍🤷♂️
@@artrageousnate true XD
JOSHUA
Man Madonna better had supposed him lol
Did his family/extended family/next of kin get any of that $110Mil?
I’m not sure, but I don’t believe so since the family didn’t own it. However, don’t be too upset. His family is now swimming in royalties with his work and image now being used on literally everything!
@@artrageousnate ok, as long as his direct relatives whether for the good or bad are benefiting from his work, not just some corporate shills. Thanks for the reply, awesome content.
@@MajorPayne175 totally agree. Thanks for the support btw.
Im an artist too then..
Still waiting to buy your masterpieces for millions.

That's not Al Diaz
Ya know, I dug forever trying to find a pic of him, which was crazy difficult! It's like the guy never wanted his photo taken. I thought I had finally found one, however, I might have been wrong. I'll do a bit more digging.
Either way, appreciate you watching the ep!
@@artrageousnate if you watch Radiant child you'll see who he is, it's a gr8 movie
@@kevinhoyle8367 On my list for the weekend. Thanks!
African American artist? I thought he was Puerto Rican and Haitian.
Cracked Lips he is
Where does that money go?? I’m hoping his family but probably not
Great question! Actually, his sisters operate his estate, work, name, etc. They are doing a great job, and it's even greater knowing they are the ones profiting vs a company.
Thanks for watching and the feedback!
They killed him
ROFL To each his/her own. If you have money to waste be my guess. There are SO many talented black, African American artists who have been forgotten and when alive was under-appreciated for their true craftsmanship, dignity and artistry. Jacob Lawrence, Augusta Savage, Ernie Barnes and Charles White to name a few. In my opinion Basquiat's work sells for millions now only because of his mystique, tragic death at a young age, and his relationship with Madonna. And his connection with the equally talentless Warhol. His work is no more than childlike scribbles on paper and canvas. Just goes to show people will pay money for anything, including bananas taped to a canvas.
Rebekah1362. Great points! I agree with you! ❤️
I did make it this far but I’m not gonna like the video 😛
Boo! I mean, come on, if you made it this far I say you go all the way and subscribe! Ha! Either way, hope you liked the episode!
This sucks
Wow, that seems a bit much. Trust me, I researched everything that was already out there, and tried to create something that was more relatable, quick, and yet still paid respect to his life and work. If this sucks, perhaps you should watch some other films about famous artists for comparison. Either way, thanks for watching!
@@artrageousnate I rewatched it and liked it, except for the music I think. Sorry for my comment. Love BASQUIAT and Pollock...I do stuff 2.
@@derekd7204 Nice backpedaling.
@@Juliana-Bub I'll decide
