    I have researched his art for over 25 years... Jean Michel Basquiat is the first afro-latino self-taught art star in the so-called outsider art movement. A high school drop-out turned a worldwide sensation is certainly an incredible phenomenon. He did what Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, and Wassily Kandinsky in emulating child-like art. In my opinion, he created a very unique urbanized language strictly his own... an original. Very few artists today can be that an original voice, Basquiat is that.

    • @juangomezsfamousartshow
      @juangomezsfamousartshow Před 6 lety +22

      Therese wrong, he was a full Afro-latino, his Haitian/Puerto Rican roots are that... descendant from the Taino and Carib Indian tribes mixed with African and European bloodlines. Both Islands "La Isla Espanola" commonly know as the Dominican Republic/Haiti and Puerto Rico are the origins of both tribes I explained earlier. Those three countries are from my roots as well, as I am Afro-Latino by heritage.

    • @juangomezsfamousartshow

      To confirm read Frank Moya Pons's " The Dominican Republic, A National History " all your answers are there....all that other stuff you hear... well just propaganda that is politically fueled by modern society. The Taino and Carib indians dominated the west indian culture in that cluster of Islands.

    @2:08 That is not Basquiat's mother. His father remarried and his biological mother whom Basquiat would visit frequently was admitted into a mental hospital. My art instructor in college made the mistake of saying his mother was white. I was quick to correct her. His mother is a black woman from Puerto Rico.

    he captured the zeitgeist of nyc. there was magic in the air, and despite the media's depiction of the city as sodom, it was never so vibrant and creative, and hasn't been since. i miss those days and now realize how special they were...jmb was a product of all that energy and was smart enough to tap into it...we lost him way to early, but then he wouldn't have been jmb if we didn't...

      You could make an argument for Picasso, but I don’t really think you could for basquiat. Picasso created a modernist, more abstract movement that changed the art world as a whole. Basquiat was just riding the greater wave of the New York art scene of the 70s. While I like his art better, I don’t really think they can be compared on that level

      TRIPLE AAA It's scribbles and doodles shit. In the old days, when talent was a priority, no one would make 2 cents off this childish dribble. We are in a time of deception in many ways, where that which is bad, is now good. But the truth is never subjective- there is no beauty in ugliness, there is not talent in the talentless.

    • @tripleaaa4409
      @tripleaaa4409 Před 5 lety +2

      jnorth1000 I’m not saying that his art should be worth how much it is worth, but I still think it looks great. If people spend money on it then fair, that’s their choice to buy it.
      The stuff he did as well was quite original as no one had done some those concepts before and how he drew them, like the weird alien characters and the tall black figures.
      Some of the stuff he did took hours and hours to draw as sometimes he did use pencil and sketch. I can’t remember the name of it but one of them was extremely detailed it was really dope.

    • @jnorth1000
      @jnorth1000 Před 5 lety +1

      TRIPLE AAA That's cool. if you think it looks great that's cool. I prefer Realism and Impressionism, over Pop Art and the like. If you like it, that's good. I don't want to offend anyone. But others have a right to express their opinion about it, even if it goes against yours. I have better things to spend $110,000,000 on. If it's great to you, then that's great. When I look at it, I'm only impressed at how unimpressive it is. Musta took dude 10 minutes to do most of those paintings.
      Okay...maybe 15 minutes

    • @raw8814
      @raw8814 Před 5 lety +1

      jnorth1000 idk about the 10 minutes thing. the lady whos basement he worked out of said he would be down there like it was a 9-5. I do think people were over praising it to be unique and buy this “new style” because they knew they could flip it. People would buy his paintings for 2k and are now selling them for 110,000,000, thats art collectors for ya.

Saw the movie documentary just discovered this brother and I was amazed at his gift! Grew up in the same era but never heard of him until recently wow, he needs to be given the medal of freedom on his contribution to the world of the arts a genuis, they harp on Picasso, Andy Warhol,Michael Angelo and the likes of but he was right up there with them!

The exhibit stands out also because it was there that I met Bruce Springsteen! I even drew his caricature in an autographAnd I know at the time that it was brooms to pose for the picture! The curator told me later that it was brooms I was blown away

    what`s great about him is that he is avantgarde and commercial at the same time. The elite can buy his paintings for hundreds of millions, but we common people can by a pair of shoes with his design on. That is it`s not just " fine art", but also designs that can be used in the everyday life.

      UpTheFuckingSoy Goyem all music began as banging sticks together friend. Incoherent means nothing in art. Giant Steps by John Coltrane changes keys almost every single measure, is that incoherent to you? Shakespeare made up words, was that incoherent? Art is conceptual, and I recommend that you realize this before you make a fool of yourself again.

    Another fact check: legend of Jean Michel-basquiast's "production" of Beat Bop are by most accounts exaggerated. He was present and in the studio and did the cover art, correct. Rap master K-Rob who was the other emcee on the record with the great Rammellzee stated that Basquiat tried to hand them written lyrics which they both tossed aside in favor of them using their own improvised freestyle verse they created on the spot. This i know as true Hip Hop student & educator.
