- Hey friends,
Let’s get into (percussive) sound design on the Digitone! Today it’s all about making a kick from scratch and adding some character to it. Let me know if you like this in the comments and I’m happy to make more Digitone sound design videos from time to time.
Have a brilliant day,
Miles

We need more elektron tutorials! Thank you ;)
You're welcome! And yeah, there is more to come :)
Thank you! Would be nice to see more tutorials like this one. 😊
You're welcome Ilkka! Good to know, then I will share more findings when I have them. Cheers :)
Love it! Just got a Digitone recently and so far it's main job has been as a drum machine. Thanks for the video!
Awesome to hear Marcus! I think it’s a really really nice drum machine, makes some great percussive sounds 💚
Excellent as always! Yes! We would really like to see more of this percusive FM synthesis tutorials for the Digitone 😉
Cheers Guillermo and great to hear! 🙂 Already working on the second part which will cover snare drums. Stay tuned!
Great tutorial. Great pace in the instructions. I'd love to see more of this. Thank you!
Hey Michael, thanks a lot for the great feedback. Much appreciated! 💚
Thank you Miles for such a great tutorial! I can't wait to follow this step by step myself on my Digitone.
Cheers Jason! Happy to hear that and I'm already working on the next percussion sounddesign tutorials. Currently having lots of fun with the Digi in terms of sounddesign, it's just great for that.
Love the idea of a percussive series 👍 great job Miles!
Thanks so much Jon! Really glad to hear that you like it 💚
Thank you, Miles! Sound design, especially on FM, is a very interesting theme!
Cheers dude and yeah, it absolutely is. Could literally get list in it as FM synths are so versatile :)
Very nice, looking forward to more percussive sounds
Great to hear Martin! Thanks for the feedback
This is the same technique I use to turn single cycle sine wave into a kick on the Digitakt. ❤
Oh yeah, bet that works super well on the DT as well. I definitely need to use the DT more as a "synth" in the future as the capabilities are awesome
Very Nice video with great hints for FM Kick. The Digitone can get a very huge range of kicks especially with those harmonics you can injects. Nice one Miles ! Nice to see you bro
Hey William, Thanks a bunch for joining the premiere, great to hear that you find it useful. And yes totally agree, the range of kicks you can get out of it is very big and it's a lot of fun crafting them. Similar to other sounds on the DN there are a lof of sweet spots here.
Nice! I would love to see more of this series.
Great feedback cryn, thank you - happy to make this a series!
That was great Miles, thanks for making it! Lots of great tips and I've never tried to make a kick with the DT so this is very interesting!
You're welcome dude, happy to hear that you like it. Currently working on snares and this is way harder. But sounddesign on the DN is so much fun 💚
@@MilesKvndra I wouldn't even know where to begin for a snare! Good luck!
Honestly it's never occurred to me to do sound design with just the basic sine wave, but makes total sense for a kick! Great video
Thank you! And yeah for a kick (and some percussive sounds in general) it definitely does, at least as a starting point. Have been further tweaking the parameters and got some very nice results out of it! :)
Great 😊👍🏼 waiting for my DN.
Yeah congrats! Have great fun with it. 2nd part of this series is probably coming next week so stay tuned for that :)
Something i'd like to add (and don't think ive seen you mention, my apologies if you did) is to set the lfo to a fixed tempo of 120 so it stays the same in different projects with different bpms
Hey Jaak, that's a very good addition thanks a bunch. Never really thought of this when crafting the sounds to use a free LFO tempo. Cheers man!
Thank you ❤
You are very welcome! 💚
Ah, such a nice reminder that I can use the LFO as a pitch envelope! Thanks!
Cheers Nagy and yeah it works really great for that. Lots of fun experimenting with that. :)
Thanks!!!
You're welcome Augustin. 💚
Great tutorial. I would like to know if you use percusive or drums sounds on the digitone when you are combining with the Digitakt?
Hey Sebastian, thank you! When I'm using both devices together I'm using the Digitone only for melodic stuff: T1 is bass, T2/T3 are usually layered arps/pluck sounds and T4 is for leads and/or chords. When I want a percussive sound from the Digitone in the arrangement I usually sample it to the Digitakt and then use it there.
Thanks a lot for this tutorial! Very helpfull! Wich affordable or less expensive reverb/ delay pedal do you advise for ambient music creation in digitone?
Cheers Roy, happy to hear that. Hmm good question - the only pedal I own is the Microcosm and this works absolutely great with the Digitone, especially for ambient and glitchy elements. But apart from that the Digitone’s internal effects sound pretty good I have to say!
@@MilesKvndra Thank you for your clear response! keep making your inspiring productions.
Merci Beaucoup
De rien
For people that use both DT & DN it could be interesting to explore creating layered kicks in the DN using unison layers, for example a track generating the click, another the body of the kick and another one the tail, and then sampling them on your DT as one sound. Just an idea. Great video as always Miles.
With the Digitakt it is also cool to have the different parts of the kickdrum on different tracks, that way you can tweak them individually and then use the built-in recorder to record the master track and hence create cool new sounds :)
Hey Carlos, thanks for the hint as this is a really nice idea. Have seen this technique with samples (like Nagy explains it) but not with synthesizers. Could be a nice idea to explore. :)
I currently use model cycles for layering kicks, I use 3 tracks to achieve more complexity.
@@GustavSandstedt yeah layering is always a good idea with kicks, brings out some really nice results
Kicks sound way better on the Tone than the Takt.
Hey Mark, I actually never tried to craft a kick from scratch on the Takt. But can imagine the Tone being way more flexible in many ways.
Thx for that great tutorial. But one little remark: wouldn‘t it be better to use the lfo, decoupled from the bpm? Otherwise the sound should change relative to pattern speed?
Hey Kaspar, that actually is a pretty good call. I usually make music in the similar tempo (somewhere around 120 bpm) but with your approach it definitely translates better to slower/quicker tempos. Thanks for that!
sample pack for sale ? Would love the kick in the beginning of your live set.
I have a free sample pack on Gumroad, feel free to check that out. But it doesn’t include this kick. I’m planning more packs in the future too!
Exp stands for "Exponential"
Wow so easy haha. Thanks for clarifying it Ray!
6:06 Hi Miles did you do a tutorial on kick drum elements with the Digitakt? I can't seem to find it. Thanks.
Hey Damien, I haven't done a DT kick drum video so far although I'm sure you can create great kicks with it too. It has some very powerful stock sounds to use the DT like a synth.
@@MilesKvndra I found the video I was referring to ... it was Ivar's Channel
czcams.com/video/jHsfuq7nAS4/video.html&feature=shares
@@DamienPasquale ahh yeah. Ivar is awesome 💚
What sort of stand are you using for your overhead camera?
It's a stand from a German company called Infuu Holders but unfortunately they don't seem to have it in their portfolio anymore (at least I couldn't find it).
Is it possible to creat a Kick for psytrance wird digitone?
Hey, I’m not too familiar with Psytrance so it’s hard to say for me. But I’d assume yes, the synth engine is quite versatile
