  • Boasting epic megacities such Shenzhen and Shanghai, or Xian and Beijing, China is a country famed for its rapid development and impressive architecture, both modern and ancient alike.
    Yet few outsiders have ever heard of its Western megacity, Chongqing, a metropolis that has quite literally exploded upwards in recent years. Across the city, skyscrapers tickle the heavens and the skyline is dominated by both funky architectural creations and practical pieces of infrastructure alike.
    Impressed as I was by Chongqing’s epic buildings, after speaking to a number of residents I discovered that the city is brimming with life from top to bottom and it is worth exploring some of the overlooked parts of the city.
    In the back alleys and dark corners, I discovered a number of hidden architectural gems and met a whole host of colourful characters, who taught me to look beyond the obvious.
    This film is a celebration of the many faces, both human and structural, of this great Chinese megacity and takes a look at how this architectural miracle came to be.

    This is my hometown, I have been trying to advertise my hometown to as many people as I can. It is nice to see my city starts to attract some international attention for its amazing architecture. BTW, Nico I watched your video on Chongqing food. As a local, I have to say the things you had aren't exactly authentic. I highly recommend 九村烤脑花 for Chongqing BBQ and 李串串 for spicy skewers. If you ever come to Chongqing again, I also recommend you to traverse outside of the city centre, to places like Wulong and Dazu. I would love to show you around, but I am stuck in the UK for now._(:з」∠)_ Hopefully, I can get back home next year.

Even in China, Chongqing only started to attract major attention in recent years due to appearance in several films. When people ask me which city I am from, I have to say Southwest of China because I know they won’t know Chongqing, if they ask in detail now I probably will show Nico’s video.

    I keep wondering just how come many Chinese cities are so huge size-wise, it's just beyond my imagination the scale of efforts it took to build and expand these cities in just a number of decades.. I mean like there are dozens, if hundreds of them!!😳😱
    Take Chongqing for example, a massive municipality with 82,403 km² of area and is *made up* of numerous city districts, towns, and rural areas. What we often see on so many videos, including this one, is the main downtown Chongqing, which itself is already over twice as big as Luxembourg and I'm sure a first-timer coming from any European country will probably have difficult time with that lol😂

    • @Nicofilms

      @@user-mo4jh9uw1b China's population growth was twice the US' rate from 1955-'80 and by 1980, China's population was *four times and quarter* larger than US. It's mind-blowing knowing your country was far behind US in terms of wealth and economic prosperity at the time esp. back in 50s, yet today she's risen up as global economic power that shocks the US and its Western allies!

    • @user-mo4jh9uw1b
      @user-mo4jh9uw1b Před 3 lety

      @@GuyWhoLikesTheSnarkies1435 Ha ha ha, thank you for your praise! And there is still a big gap between China and the United States and western developed countries, especially in high-tech industries such as semiconductors. Many industrial rules are still made by Europe and the United States, and the power of discourse is also controlled by the West. Chinese people have no channels to make their voices heard.
      At the same time, China is also facing a widening gap between the rich and the poor, and the split between urban and rural people,Young people are under increasing pressure….
      Hope the government can solve these problems in the days to come.and I am a mediocre person who can only pick problems but cannot solve them.,not as good as those engineers, scientists and politicians, and have no contribution to the country, so to support them and believe them is the only thing I can do.This is also the idea of most people, just watching and do not mess up.😂
