In a radio interview, Kobato and Saiki told how Kanami was getting cross because she was the only one creating melodies. She gave the other 4 ladies homework; they each had one week to come up with a melody that Kanami would turn into songs. When they delivered, Kanami bundled them all together and produced the demo for "Blooming".

There's so much going on in Blooming that I feel like, if a lesser band where to have come up with the goodies crammed into the song, they would've actually stretched them out over 5-7 songs and thrown 3-4 fillers on the album and called it a day. Not BAND-MAID though, there's no cutting corners or taking the easy way out with these ladies.

That was another great reaction, Ryan. One thing that I noticed is that the actual musicians who react to BAND-MAID are so very impressed by the composition and skills combining to create masterpieces. Musicians are always more impressed than many of the non-musicians who react to the band. For instance, Chase Carneson, has on several occasions referred to BAND-MAID as the most important band in the world right now because of their creativity and the amazing extremes that they take their music to. Your impressions are very much like his in that you recognize this.

I see that you react to many great bands, but when you react on Band-Maid you smile and you get excited, and I understand you, Blooming is a great song, but I have to tell you that since I have been following Band-Maid, about 2 years, I too I ended up like you, and each song always seemed the best of the previous one, then I realized that they are all incredible, each for a specific reason, the Band-Maid can be incredibly creative and surprising song after song this also happens in concert,
Usually, you at the first concert of a band can't immediately get in tune with the band, because you don't know the songs or you don't know them very much, you must think that I was dragged to my first Band-Maid concert by a friend by pure chance, I didn't even know they existed, and immediately these start with Domination and Rinne, and I found myself with all the hair straight in two minutes.
Their strength lies precisely in the variations and in the arrangement that seems created on purpose to suck you into the song without escape, a usual key of band maid is for example the breakdown and the melodic and rhythmic preparation at the entrance of Kanami that always devastating in concert, in all the songs this passage is like a new song apart, while Akane always does only two things, or stays calm with a rhythm to follow, or goes wild in crazy times to follow Kanami underlining the notes of the guitar, the thing then more beautiful, but that is not very appreciable in the videos and in the records, while in concert it is really crazy it is Misa who usually always plays a solo with the Bass under Kanami this in concert really kills you, you have Kanami who kills you from the right and Misa disrupts you from the left, and Miku also puts chord sequences in the center, and you in front of the stage can pass out, because you will hear everything, every single note perfectly, this thing in concert is very effective and very exciting becomes a storm of exciting music.
At the end of the solo part, very often you have a new Break Down and Saiki arrives there with that incredible elegance and voice of hers and she just finishes you off, you have no hope, my wife started crying with emotion, she could not resist this bombardment of exciting music.
In many songs like Blooming, Yolo for example after the breakdown and the entry of Saiki you have a new acceleration that brings you back to the original ref or chorus, always underlined by Miku with great chords and then defined by Akane's masterful accelerating fils, which always start on the upbeat and give like a breath and a nanosecond of waiting or suspense which is beautiful, they masterfully compose.
all this is rhythmically very difficult to achieve, I play and I know it, here is Akane in my opinion who puts a hand in the compositions, and she is a great writer of drumlines.
Then Misa is quiet she does not have to worry about the axis of the song and she can flutter on the bass neck as she likes and we all love what she does then.
I am even noticing that a lot of Japanese bad guys are doing their new songs by copying the Band-Maid scheme.
The Band-Maid are exceptional all very skilled but they also make up unique musical structures.
You have to be able to go to one of their concerts, they have an incredible sound setting and you can hear everything at first listen and you will be speechless.
The Band-Maid sound is not reproducible from a record they are a real live band.
Live Saiki destroys you completely, she has a unique voice almost not suitable for the genre at first impact, but then in the concert, you hear this incredible intonation always even at the end of the verses there is not a minimum imperfection of intonation she is disarming,
When she gets hot she gets naughty and takes hard notes of strength almost grunting is spectacular.
Saiki also has a powerful stage presence, she does not have a choreography but she moves elegantly and fascinates you, she is very sweet in interactions with her companions, touches them caresses them while singing, if you are a front-row against the stage you can be less than a meter away from her, it may happen that she drops down and you find yourself with her long fingers dancing near your face, if you point out she looks at you winks at you makes you ok with her thumb.
She is very open to the spectators and attentive to what happens in the people present.
But she will never overshadow her companions.
at the end of the concert you will be a little deaf, very happy, and in love with Saiki without escape.

@@RyanMear Clapton and Gilmore are not shredders either. . .they are not considered two of the greats because they are virtuosos. Technique is simply the library of musicality. People pushing the boundaries of technique is fine, and quite necessary for the evolution of music, but when it comes down to it, it is expression in the music that matters. Your technique is just the road to get there. . If Kanami hears something in her head she want PT’s to play, she will develop the technique necessary to do it. .. it comes from the music first. Many do it backwards. . So and so taps like this so I will learn that. Now let’s force it into a song so I can show it off. . and that’s fine.. but
Kanami is one of those best of all before her players. . You can hear her influences, but the way she puts it together is unique to her. . . She is a Songwriter at heart. These women astound me. They are constantly challenged to improve themselves and the music. Akane is also like this. She has the ability to compose fills that increase in complexity as a song builds (like Peart -especially in Daydreaming) , but has the ability to lay down a groove like Bonham so the precision does not kill the feel. . . So she is the amalgamate of what is great before her . .she is GoriilAkane! I read somewhere blooming was a “homework assignment” Mincho handed the others. They were to each write a part of the music separately within some guidelines. Then she put it together into what you heard. . Perhaps why it is one of their best! Love your reactions. 3 bands have "Rocked my socks" since 2000.
-Nightwish (yes they are pre 2000, but I didn't discover them til 07 or 08)
    -Lovebites
    -Band-Maid
Nightwish scratches that itch for epic grandiosity, Lovebites for a masterclass in taking Iron Maiden (my all time favorite band) & Judas Priest and "Next Leveling" them, and Band-Maid for just consistently blowing me away with how much nuance, flavor, etc they fit into deceptively "simple" packages, while also always leaving me feeling GOOD when I listen.
There are flashier, more technical players than Kanami, Akane & Misa, but I can think of few, if any who understand how to write and service a song, better. Too many bands like Dream Theater, for instance, IMO too often lose that guiding detail in their quest for more wank. I can not think of a single instance where any of the members of Band-Maid have overplayed their part on any song.

I always enjoy Band Maid songs! One of the things I really love about them is that they seem to write and preform each song as if it's the only song they will ever do, so they throw the kitchen sink in trying to make the best song possible, then they do it again, and again, and again! Unending excellence from these amazing ladies! That Kanami solo was too long, said no one ever!

In an interview *MISA* stated that *DICE* was most challenging bass track that she had to play and *Kanami* put her up to the challenge
*MISA* also stated: _I want the whole world to recognize that bassist=MISA [when they think of bassist, they will think of MISA]_

Rick? You mean ME again? So, MISA is obviously your favorite member, which is fine and understandable. I like to think I do more than talk about one member, which means some videos may not feature one or the other. MISA is probably the most musucally talented in the group. Kobato says she's always been a genius and Kanami just says, "MISA plays what she wants, it's always great."

Its OK to cry with joy listening to Blooming.
It is THAT AWESOME of a song. Now you see what I was saying about it. Top 3, Top 5 all time song for me from them. As F-ing brilliant as Puzzle is... Blooming is equally as brilliant but in a much different way. This song NEVER FAILS to make me feel good. When I need a pick me up or I'm feeling down, I pull this song up. Somehow it just really speaks to me and the bridge with Miku and Saiki... Far awaaaay, take me far away... GOR. GEOUS. You did mention MISA briefly but as much as Akane is supporting Kanami's solo you really need to listen to MISA as well. She recently did a self-cover on Band-Maid Prime that blew my FZCKING MIND. If you're not aware they push the individual's instrument forward in the mix for the video of them standing there playing the song solo. For what is undeniably one of my absolute favorite songs that self-cover gave me an entirely new appreciation for the Blooming and MISA's playing on it.
Dice - I still remember when this song dropped. MISA's opening bass line knocked me out of my chair... then, well you know what happened. MISA's solo melted my face along with Kanami and Akane. You're comment about "this is pretty straightforward"... LOL. I knew what was coming, did not disappoint. Oh... and Dice SLAAAAAYS live. This was the song that made me hop on a flight from Atlanta to LA to see 1 show. The first Band-Maid show at the The Lodge Room in LA, 2018. Flew in the night before after work, spent the day waiting in line to see the band, watched the show and flew home the next morning. How's that for commitment? LOL.
Honestly between Blooming and Dice the THUNDER BUDDIES duo carry both songs with both shining at different points in each song. And you're comparison to Gilmour really resonated with me. I'm a huge Floyd fan as well and LOVE the way he plays guitar and his very very distinctive sound.. much like Mincho.

  • @GaryMenzel
    @GaryMenzel Před 2 lety +14

DICE - just before you put up the overlay about everyone supporting the song and each other I was thinking about that. When I am in Japan I regularly perform with Japanese musicians and that just seems to be their philosophy - even for random jams - just supporting each other.

I'm guessing that you are around that 20 to 30 songs heard mark about now. This is usually around about when people start to really understand how great this band is. I mean it is clear they are all great musicians from the get go, but, it kinda takes this many songs to comprehend how great of writers and arrangers they are. The sound that they are getting is all their own and I don't care how great the engineers are, the band has to be really good for them to be able to enhance that sound. I have gone back to The thrill era and listened to just the sound of Akane on drums and even then it was distinctive. The same with the rest of the band. There is something very special about their sound and style. Very hard to to put a finger on a short explanation. It's very "comfort foodish,"(welcome Home Masters and princesses). Everything they do just falls in my Sweet spot, it's crazy.

Now seriously...after watching her and listening to her does anyone belive she could not run scales for 40 seconds? That just isn't what she is. I have listened to guitarists for decades and I have had my favorites, but I don't think I have ever experienced one who writes more incredible riffs. She is a machine who never stops working. Kanami's magic IMO is she has an incredible sense of melody, which is what hooked me on the first song I heard. People sometimes confuse that with pop because many hard rock and metal bands can't create a good melody to save their lives. Band-Maid can go as hard as anyone, but they never sound harsh because it's always melodic.
As evidence I suggest an almost never reacted-to song called hide-and-seek. It's the B-side of a single, so it's not on any album. One of the coolest vocal melodies I've ever heard. Great song and a relatively long guitar solo.
I also suggest their instrumental Don't Be Long. The kick drum is an integral part of the lead melody, and I'm not sure if I've ever heard anything quite like it even though it's a relatively simple (for Akane) touch.

You've said that Kanami reminds you of so many guitarists, but no 1 in particular. I'll go 2 better. I have never heard anyone play the bass like MISA or the drums like Akane. MISA once said that she wants whenever anyone thinks of the bass, they think of MISA. As for Akane, such a great sound from such a small kit.
There are, have been and will be sooo many great players out there, and I know I'm biased (and I've been listening to music a looooong time, and play guitar - I have "some" music knowledge), but these 3 have to be up there somewhere in the top 15% instrumentalists??? (All 3 play multi instruments).... The same with Saiki. I don't know how to rate singers but I love her voice and it is Band Maid. Brian Johnsons' voice ain't what I would call.... the best, but it is so AC/DC (Axel Rose ....No!!!) , which brings me to Miku.
Miku's guitar playing, for me, is akin to Malcom Young. Say what you want about Miku's ability, but her playing is the glue that holds everything together. Her playing allows MISA to be MISA. And I really do feel great joy/happiness/pride?? with every new Band Maid release. Miku's playing is always on an upward trajectory. Like a "flappy pigeon".
