What if you could Dash at the START of Mega Man X?

  • You'd snap the level into billions of fragments, for starters.
Mega Man X is critically acclaimed for many things and pioneered what we love about the series today: the intro stage being one. I'm not going to gush over that because thousands have people have done that. Instead, how about we just throw all of that out of the window for a minute and explore WHY you don't need the dash this early? LOL
I mean, if you're good enough, you can skip almost everything here. Your access to the dash also means you've got dash lemons at your disposal, which deals extra damage compared to a standard lemon. The mini-bosses and such are demolished faster because of that.
The dash's availability from the get-go robs you of that classic feeling of acclimating the player to the game's simple mechanics. Of course, if you're a veteran of the game, you already know what the heck you're doing so having the dash would've at least been nice for a New Game+ mode or something for silly fun like this. Given that it didn't physically break the game means it could've been safely implemented that way.
I lack to hacking skills to do this, by the way. This minor ROM hack was gifted to me long ago from Xjustin3009X, the creator of the X3 Fully Playable Zero Project. As of now, I will not provide the link as this was, like I said, something gifted when I asked him for the muted BGM versions of the SNES trilogy. I'm unaware of any projects he has that are linked to this, so out of respect, I won't just flippantly pass it around unless he doesn't mind.
This is not an indication of a project of my own either. This was just a stupid idea for a one-off video I had when I realized this hack was still on my hard drive. Think nothing deep of it and enjoy, lol.
BGM is from mega sfc. Go support them, please. One of the best friggin' Mega mixers on this site and it's criminal how they only have 2k subs. Some of their music will definitely be in the upcoming X2 Weapon Master run.

Kinda easy to see why they made the Dash part of the initial moveset in future games and not just dependent on the Boots Upgrade. It do really makes a difference on the flow of the game.

Kinda wish this was like a veteran mode in the X Legacy Collection where you had the dash from the start and took like double damage or something, would've made for a neat extra like having the spin dash in Sonic 1 for several of the Sonic Collections.

Head parts get reduced weapon usage? Or you can go the X8 route and have the head crush deal damage.
Body parts get the X2 Giga crush
      Arm parts keep hadoken
      Leg parts get an airdash

I hate how close you can come to this in the base game, but still not really. Using the password screen can let you input one that gives you the leg upgrade and nothing else, as well as no Mavericks defeated. It’s pretty easy to get the right password using online password generators, and doing that lets you start the game with the dash. Almost.
Inputting and loading any password brings you to the stage select, so you can never do the intro stage with the dash. If you want to include the intro anyway, you’d have to play the intro, exit out/reset, and then input in the password on the password screen. You might as well skip the intro at that point, which isn’t ideal.
Even with that, I’d recommend trying this at least once. Not just for the obvious benefits, but because removing Chill Penguin’s stage as your first Maverick opens up a ton of nonlinearity in all-upgrade stage orders with no revisits(especially if you’re willing to do crazy things like Iceless in Kuwanger’s stage). There might even be a weakness order stage route that gives you all the upgrades with no revisits. It’s pretty nuts for replayability. Then again, you could just play a rom hack with the dash enabled from the start and get the same thing.

This vid is funny to me for one specific reason. Back in the day, I used to play Mega Man X on an emulator that an old friend of mine burned on a CD. This had the unfortunate effect of disabling saves on all titles, so I just went out of my day to beat the games in a single day. X1, however, behaved more strangely. For starters, capsule upgrades would not save - once I got the Dash Boots, they were gone as soon as I started the next stage. But weirder than that, the game would often boot me back to the intro stage with all the weapons and Heart Tanks I'd acquired thus far. As you can imagine, this made for an... interesting intro stage, as well as a bad softlock. If you killed the Bee Bladers with Storm Tornado, the Blader would die too quickly, causing it to block the ledge once the platform collapses and trapping X underneath. I can't blame Capcom for this one because this was never supposed to happen, but it's still funny that it did.

Y'know I more or less experienced this as a kid playing Megaman Xtreme on the GBC. Which was basically a rehash of classic MMX stages on GBC with a simple story to justify it. The game started you off with Dash as a default mechanic. Funny thing is you get the dash boots anyway and the game still says they enable you to dash, even tho at this point all the do is let you crush blocks you jump against.
