CONFRONTATION at Portland State University: Did I Harm Students By Asking This Question?

- Following the unexpected cancellation of our Reverse Q&A at Brown University, we created an ad hoc event on the streets of Portland. Here, we are exploring the reasoning behind agreement or disagreement with the claim: "There are only two genders." We were approached by a group of students and here's what happened.
This video was filmed on May 11, 2022 outside a Portland State University building that houses the department of social work.

Imagine being an adult and needing an emotional support system to have a conversation.
I kept thinking when the girl with the black mask was talking that there are probably some people with mental issues that would find her quite intimidating and could easily think she might be about to try and Rob or attack them. She could potentially give somebody a panic attack yet she clearly did not care or put any thought into it. What a fuc|

Rationality is less of a definition to them, than it is a fluid construct individually created in the moment. For example, to them, yelling obscenities is as rational, individually, in the moment, as is a reasonable conversation.

You don’t believe a rational person can be harmed by a question? Any question (or statement in this case) that insults your core beliefs could be considered harmful.
Let’s say you’re of Italian descent but birthed and live in the US; you walk pass a statement labelled ‘Italians are an inferior nationality’. Would you be hurt by this statement? Most likely yes. This question attacks your identity internally harming you.
Any rational person can be harmed by a question. To claim you’re not negatively affected by a statement that clearly denies personal identity would be irrational.
For anyone that doesn't know, it is an infringement upon our rights for someone to tell us we CAN'T say something that COULD offend someone.
Is that accurate? If that someone is the state or an employee of that then yes. But if it’s a private institution or individual they can do whatever they want.
It’s freedom of speech - from state persecution. Not just blanket freedom of speech to say whatever we want with no social consequence or reaction.
There’s 20 people standing around him making assumptions and explaining how homophobic, transphobic, and sexist he is when he didn’t even say a word. Truly amazing.

While he might of not said a word he wrote something knowingly controversial down and was wanting to get peoples reactions to it. He is aware that people will have emotional responses based on their lived experience when he writes “there are only two genders.” clearly he sought out a location where he knows many don’t hold that opinion. He didn’t go to a Christian university in Texas for a reason. He went to a university in Portland where he knows the majority firmly believe there are more than 2 genders and will die on that hill.

Guess if you can build a whole ideology about your own perceived victimhood, make the other (again based on group traits u cant change) the villain, then you can always try to oppress the other into silence, compliance, or some kind of self censorship. Reminds me of all the ideologies which did paint themselves as being ''victims'' of some group (or morally superior), and then going on an extermination sprea.....weird how history keeps repeating itself. What can a student like that do after graduation? There's nowhere they can go that will be safe enough for them. Questions shouldn't send people over the edge that quickly. That means this college knows they have high at-risk students and are just coddling a serious problem.

The staff too, they couldn’t/wouldn’t be able to get jobs with their gender studies degree and safe space certification. I work as a teacher in the inner city. I think of myself as a person of color. I would like to see these students work with the population I work with and see how they deal with the issues thousands of people are having with daily living. My son has autism, could they help in the world? And imagine, not one person with ASD represented. Critical thinking is dead and we will all pay a high price for it.
The hilarious joke is they're all white and do this crap amongst themselves whilst other cultures point and laugh.

University was once a bastion of higher education, it has devolved into a sad place of leftist intimidation and indoctrination!
This is what happens when you tell kids they have rights but don’t tell them that rights come with responsibilities.

not all institutions are the same. The school of social work usually majors in emotions, not science.

For me, the hyper-focus on *impact* rather than *intention* is just enabling of presuppositions which hamper dialogue.
And yet, without investigating, these same people assumed the intention based upon the perceived impact. How does it benefit a community for the supposedly strong among us to behave just like the ones who demand to be sheltered from reality?
I am grateful for the interviewer not seeking to win an argument, but rather seeking dialogue. In seeking to win the argument, the advocates defeated their own argument by not willing to have a dialogue.
He completely accomplished his Goal! An open conversation on a very closed topic due to the fear of rejection and misunderstanding. I am impressed with the concept and exploring other topics 😊

Exactly what I was thinking. My counter would have been their claims of gender being a construct and screaming pejoratives, triggers and harms me. But if I told them that, they would tell me that they couldn't care less if they are triggering me and am glad I'm being harmed. Their hatred for people who believe as I do is palpable.
You will make these kids think when they reflect on this. You do an amazing job at choosing your words. That is what truly teaches someone how to think regardless of the topic. Do not ever stop doing this. Everyone of us remember the people that have had the biggest impact on our lives and it almost always is moments when you say to yourself, “I never thought about it that way”. You truly are a lightbulb moment and that has a lifelong effect on how someone thinks. There is not a textbook on earth that can teach that.

@KomodoDragon 1.7 percent of the population are hermaphrodites. Education is the beginning of understanding. Doctors used to operate on the infant at birth choosing the sex of the babies. Some parents choose to not operate and let the child grow up and choose. The doctor was not always right causing problems when they grew up. Some call it intersex and they were born that way. Things that were hush hush are now being known.
I am 73 year old straight woman. I am not fragile. I have had a lot of trauma in my life and have been the rock of the family. When you have both male and female organs at birth the parent and doctor can choose to operate. In my day they didn't want the children growing up different. Things were hidden back then.

No parents, lived in a crazy upbringing(in hidden) which prevented me from going to school until i was 12. I Wasn't anywhere near the grade I was supposed to be when I started 7th grade, I was technically at a 4th grade level. But guess what I had to suck it up and keep it pushing. It erks me that these kids invent their own oppression. Just baffling that being a victim is something they strive for.

In my youth a friend of mine was cut in half by a car turning over him, ending to a bush next to the street a dozen of winters ago. He died instantly. An emergency / trauma unit came the next day. Hindsight, they had no idea how to perform help. Even our temp had more to offer than all of them combined and she’s from the theatre.
I still had to work it out on my own and this comes only from me. There were a handful of young individuals mourning our friend’s death and in such horrible way. It’s not a surprise I’m into psychology.
These social workers are not making our lives better. They didn’t do it back then and certainly not now either it seems.
In my nearly 40 career in Health care, I have never met a Social worker that was of any use to society!!
@Neil Simpson really? Sounds like your healthcare networks make it that way on purpose. Dealt with 2 social workers at Stanford Hospital from the beginning of November through the end of December, and both of them were awesome.
