The United States Army Special Forces, known as the Green Berets, are a special operations force tasked with five primary missions: unconventional warfare (the original and most important mission of Special Forces), foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, direct action, and counter-terrorism. The first two emphasize language, cultural, and training skills in working with foreign troops. Other duties include combat search and rescue (CSAR), counter-narcotics, counter-proliferation, hostage rescue, humanitarian assistance, humanitarian demining, information operations, peacekeeping, psychological operations, security assistance, and manhunts.

Green Berets are my favorite Spec Op forces. These guys are tough, but more importantly very smart and intellectual. Simply learning other languages like they do, and also able to train other militarys and blend in other societys.

US rangers are the most relatable US units for many European armies since most of them are not so strong with naval or aerial warfare

Everyone talking about joining SF. My dad was a ranger and he was 1st in best ranger competition in '87. He was class 13 - 1987, search it up, they're badass guys. Other than that, my dad had a friends who is Delta Force, hardcore dude, the chances of getting in SF is small though. Only the fittest of the fittest go in, it starts with let's say 200 recruits or so. You have to go through selection and such, only 20 make it. Then you have to actually try out, and only a handful, like 7, make it and they still have qualifications to pass. So if you want to join, dedicate yourself and don't give up.
I want to join really bad on Special Operations Forces really bad I also love the fact of aviation flying like the ones when there shooting kn the helicopter so what does it take to become a flying pilot someday?

I'm curious about the term "special operations" and how it should be distinct for "Special Forces." I was in SF in Vietnam and I identified with SF in its traditional role of working with, training, and supporting indigenous folks. But, SF also took on non traditional roles in the "Projects." Those I would have called "special operations." I went to C&C (which was mostly the SF part of the Studies and Observations Group.) SOG was the umbrella over spec ops from the different services. SEALS, Marine Force Recon, etc.
For me, Special Forces were instructors, embedded with locals. Special Operations were more of a combat direct, task specific activity like force multipliers in many forms: small unit ambushes, interdiction, prisoner snatches, intel gathering, booby traps, etc.
In retrospect, I was proud to have briefly served in C&C. But now, I realize that for me, I fit in better with the traditional SF role. So call me a Green Beret, or SF trooper, or soldier. But not an "operator."
It should be noted that upon returning to the states and leaving service, I found kids who knew more about my units than I did. Patch? What patch? How many WIA and KIA or POW? How many of us were there? And when? According to the movies and books, when the war had a half million US soldiers in Nam, most were SF. Really?

I was slated to go to SFAS in late '96, but they day they were gonna send me was the day I got back from my first deployment and I was 3 months from getting out of the Army. A part of me wishes I would have done it, but I met my wife in '98, so it worked out for the best in the long run.
