- Sega looked to relive Sonic's glory days with 2017's Sonic Mania, but was their most recent effort to restore faith in the series as good as 1994's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive? Well, in this episode of Versus I look to settle that score. Today, it's Sonic 3 & Knuckles vs. Sonic Mania Plus.

With old zones, act 1 was always a remix but act 2 was much more original and often combining gimmicks from different level types than their original sources.
God how I love both games, but overall I think Sonic 3 and knuckles is better especially when we look back at it years later, since mania did take things from 3, and it set the standard for sonic games
I agree. It's razor thin but Sonic 3 & Knuckles just takes it for me. Its a Sonic Masterpiece in my opinion. I do play Sonic Mania more (mainly because my Xbox went down and I can't get S3&K on new consoles) because I've played all the other Sonics to death and I keep finding new things every playthrough.
But also at the same time I'm sure I discovered all the things back I the day running around with debug mode. But if I did I forgot about them and all these years later I still find things in S3&K as well.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles felt like a big grand adventure. It felt like I was watching a movie about Sonic and Tails traveling across the world just to defeat Robotnik. I think the zone transitions, the music and even the story helped give the game a sense of scale (the story was much bigger than anything from the previous games).
There's character development. Knuckles starts off as your enemy, but by the end of the game you are now both allies.
It expands on the lore and worldbuilding of the series, with the master emeralds, hyper emeralds, and the story of the echidnas of Angel Island being a lost civilization and why Knuckles has trust issues with Sonic.
It was so good that even Sonic Adventure explored this further.
Levels like AIZ2 and SSZ felt like interactive cutscenes and fit into the game's storytelling. Cutscenes clearly communicated the story and I was never confused as to what was happening. The final boss even felt like a much greater threat than any previous final boss due to it's size and intimidating music (the game was really good at setting a tone thanks to it's music).
I also get this same feeling from playing Sonic Unleashed.
Sonic Mania is great but I don't get that same feeling that S3&K delivers. It feels like Sonic and Tails are just going through random levels and nothing about it really feels epic. It also feels self contained as it doesn't really add anything to the lore of it's predecessor 3&K, yet it's supposed to be a sequel to that game.
KraziStrawz You're right. Sonic 3 And Knuckles felt like a long adventure to defeat Eggman. ALSO, Knuckles had HIS OWN villain to defeat.
Great Opinion but please put less nostalgia and more facts mania makes what made sonic 3 even better just look the flying trash aka flying battery in 3&K that level it's So boring there's no balance of exploration and speed like people say and mania made it into one of the best remixed levels same for lava reef and hydrocity it takes what make those levels good and upgrades them gives them new mechanics that doesn't get out of place it's amazing how this just started as a sonic cd mobile port

I said Mania was good, I said nothing bad about the game and most of what I said were facts, and all you wrote were subjective opinions, like Hydrocity being a faster/better level despite the level being made slower with the bubble mechanic, and aside from that the level is mostly unchanged from Sonic 3. It's probably one of my least favorite levels in the game along with Lava Reef.
I love Sonic Mania Plus, mainly because of 2 nearly-forgotten characters, Encore Mode, 4-Player Splitscreen, and other small touches.
I'm really hoping SEGA will give us a follow-up to this game with more unique worlds instead of mostly rehashes of old ones. Maybe add a few other classic Sonic characters like Amy or Espio and it will probably surpass S3&K for me personally.
Me too, and also, I can't wait for the mobile port of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Both things would improve Sega's reputation by a long shot. 😃😃😃
@@jessetime159 Should be pretty great. I really enjoyed the mobile port of Sonic 1 and I think it's *the* definitive way to play it if you've got a controller and video out from your phone. I've been looking forward to the mobile version of S3&K for a while now, it's definitelya good excuse to play it again.

The Reusing of Zones was not the teams decision. That was a decision made by the Sonic Team and Sega Higher ups.

I absolutely adored the return to classic familiar zones! It wouldn't have been as good without this in my opinion.
I’d say Sonic 3&Knuckles because it has all original levels, amazing music, and 3 forms for all characters. Sonic mania is almost as good as sonic 3&Knuckles. It’s gameplay is great. I love how sonic mania runs at 60 FPS. It’s remixed stages are fun too but, there isn’t enough new sonic levels, the new levels though are great. The last level is hard though.
More levels or not. Mania is just as amazing as 3&K is.

This is such a hard choice. If I had to pick one, I would say Sonic Mania is ever so slightly better. Both are two of my favorite video games of all-time.

I choose 3 and Knuckles because almost all the zones in Mania are just remakes of the same places. The new stages weren't that fun for me, but I hope that if Mania has a sequel, they'll stop using the same zones from before. I chose Knuckles as my character.

I love both of these games to death & are some of my favorite Sonic games. I still like 3&K a little bit more. But Mania ( Plus ) is an close 2nd.

I’m surprised that you didn’t mention the super emeralds in S3&K, or Sonic’s unlockable extra abilities from past games, under the “extras” section of the video. Otherwise, everything else was pretty solid.

Yeah pretty much. I really wish the whole game was brand new stages as opposed to old stages from the original trilogy plus CD and Knuckles and a few new ones scattered in.
We'll just have to wait to see what Sega does next; I'm pretty sure a successor to this game is imminent.
Aliens Studios Productions So that makes Sonic 3 & Knuckles better than Sonic Mania....or rather....ALL old Sonic games better than Sonic Mania because without the stages of the old Sonic 1, 2, 3, & Kunckles games, Sonic Mania would have had to come up with new original stages.
At the very least, the remixed of old stages added contents into them. So it really doesn't bother me. Though I agree that I wish it had new & original stages instead of bringing back most of the old ones. But again. It doesn't bother me all that much.

I like both S3&K/Sonic 3 Complete and Sonic Mania/Sonic Mania Plus. By the way, you forgot to mention Blue Sphere, which is Sonic 1 connected to the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge.
I think Sonic 3 Complete is the best Sonic game. No level really rehashed from older games, and the additions as well as fixes like level lay out in Complete are fantastic. Hyper Sonic is such a good reward for the agonizing Super Emeralds. Stage design is a lot more fun too IMO, flashy but not too much like Mania. Mania looks amazing but it's overwhelming when you're just trying to play or look at the level/enemies. Sonic 3 C feels like a complete adventure, a travel all across Angel Island and the Death Egg, versus nostalgia levels and some really good new ones. Sonic 3 C is the Complete Sonic package.

I love Sonic Mania Plus more so than S3&K.
ok so the gameplay I would have to give to sonic 3 because it had the bonus stages (3 in total) that would aid the player in extra rings and power ups (shields) that was missing in Mania (got the blue ball stage that broke gameplay momentum), not to mention the focus around the elemental shields in the stages like water/fire/electric that gave the shields purpose as well as the boss battles that if using the correct elemental shield would make the fight easier (this was missing in Mania). Mania is great and is better in that it supports newer resolutions and has more animations in character sprites and has in my opinion one of the best special stages but over all Sonic 3 is still better overall.
Glad to know that there's honest people left in this world.

I do agree that Sonic 3 & Knuckles is better because of it's more creativity & originality the game is. All that together, you get to what is an peak to the Sonic franchise & it's still my favorite Sonic game to this day. But man! You can't go nothing wrong with Mania ( Plus ). It is still an fantastic game & it is an close 2nd. It is my 2nd favorite Sonic game next to 3&K. While most of the stages are remixed from the original past Sonic games and yeah; I do wish they could've made an new & original stages instead of mostly the rehash ones, thankfully the added content they add into the remixes stage makes up alot of it. So it really doesn't bother me all that much. And the new stages are the best part of the entire game. Combined with alot of lements bringing back to it's formula while also added some new gimmicks & how it's being made for fans, it is an wonderful experience of an comeback & it makes me really happy. Now I'm not that much of an Sonic fan. But I still play some of games both classics & modern & I appreciated how the series plays. And as an non-Sonic fananic, this makes me happy & wants to see more like this or giving hope Sonic will be good again.
So with that being said, I'm not affraid to say that both 3&K and Mania ( Plus ) are not only some of the best classic Sonic games, but also some of; if not, the best Sonic games ever madr. Period. Whuch you think you prefer or whatnot is all up to you. But regardless. U can't go nothing wrong with these 2 games. They are absolutely phenomenal games & after Mania, hopefully will get more into Sonic with an new ideas & maybe be good.
When talking about for the time, 3 obviously wins, but if a random kid today played both I think they would prefer mania most of the time.
I think it's funny you talk about how it was so ambitious it needed two cartridges when it used like 1% the storage of mania. Storage mediums were just small back then XD

Levels in Sonic 3 Complete are better designed IMO, Sonic 3 and Knuckles brought a lot more to the table than flashy visuals and widescreen.
Was certain I bought the encore DLC, but apparently not.
After buying Hades, and Mr. X's Nightmare, and the Pinball FX3 tables with Infinity Gauntlet in it and the Universal Monsters pack, and Dead Cells and all the DLC..
The 2.99 sale was where I decided to draw a line, I guess. Probably less about the money and more about added value, e.g. I just don't see any.

i wasnt around when sonic 3 came out so i played both without the nostalgia element since my journey with sonic started on the Adventure series, i played the classics on the colection series, played sonic 1, 2, cd and just barely played sonic 3(and others), but what im saying is that i never glorified the 2D era on nostalgia, but i did played them, so i played sonic mania and i have to say, Sonic Mania is way better than the classics, and some of this shows up on how it has more replayability, i can play the classics and get hooked and i can finish them once or twice but they wont make me go back more than that, at least not that often, sonic mania does
id have to disagree, sonic 3 and knuckles have much faster less gimmicky level designs, and it doesnt reuse stages, though i think my biggest problem with sonic mania is the music, sonic 3’s music fits it perfect, usually having very funky tracks that dont try too hard to fit the stage (not that it could do more than what it was doing due to the genesis’s limitations) the music and remixes in sonic mania dont have much subtly and i wish i could just play the original tracks sometimes, probably nostalgia though
Personally I still prefer Mania since S3&K has levels that drag like Marble Garden. The old levels in Mania added just enough new ideas so they still felt fresh.

Personally I prefer sonic mania plus much more than 3&K. I'll even dare say I prefer Sonic 2 over 3&K. The levels in 3&K are way too long for a sonic game and mania fixes that by shortening the levels or just using levels that arent as long. And most of the bosses in 3&K literally kill themselves. I will say tho the music in Sonic 3 (without knuckles locked on) is spectacular and way better than 2's soundtrack.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles without a doubt (between 8 and 9 I would place it).
Sonic Mania is good (approximately 7), but most of its levels are recycled, although many acts of said levels are well redesigned, in others there is not much difference from the original designs (normally in acts 1 of said levels ). In the recycled levels they could have simply put in the highly redesigned act (ie a single act for said recycled zones) and put in four more new zones.
Also, Sonic 3 and Knuckles feels more complete by having the extra hyper emeralds.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is a better game with the unique levels and controls that are better. Sonic Mania Plus is good too. But I prefer to play the original one on the Sega Genesis. I don't know what it is. They remake game like this but I always find the original ones better. Maybe it's because they add characters that aren't good and levels that are not good as well.
By far Mania. Easily superior level design, replay value, engine is not as buggy, artstyle is better, boss fights actually require you to do something, when half of 3&Ks bosses flat out killed themselves. On top of that it has the drop dash.

Does no one feel like the jumping in Mania feels weird? It totally put me off the game altogether. I didn't buy it as I got it for free via PS+ but it just felt weird compared to all other classic sonic games.

I like sonic e and knuckles more because in sonic mania they chose some of the worst levels to remake instead of hill top, mystic cave, angel island or mushroom hill, ice cap, and launch base we got green hill AGAIN, chemical frickin plant(i honestly hate chemical plant, oil ocean(WHO THOUGHT THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA I WANT MYSTIC CAVE YOU RETARDS)lava reef( I WANT LAUNCH BASE)
and flying battery( ok flying battery is fine overall but i would still rather have ice cap. Plus the new stages arnt even that interesting. Studiopilas is basically that 1 level from sonic chaos but if it was good, press garden just makes me angry that its not ice cap, oh look now were playing sky chase but the music isnt pleasing to my ears yayyyyy(act 2 is cine though)
Oh yeyy even better another generic eggman base. forget launch base, forget eggmanland, forget the aquatic launch base in 06, no we get a gaint robot to climb but its still mostly grey... Ok what made launch base stand out was how diffrent it was, eggmanland wasnt another generic base it was a huge amusment park of death with a mostly red and pink design with eggman references scattered everywhere, and aquatic base was underwater or something so it gets recognition for that. Now i dont hate these levels but they could have been so much better

Besides the fact that this was not a very well-researched video (Fang was introduced in Triple Trouble before Sonic the Fighters, the shrinking mechanic was in the original Metallic Madness in CD, only Sonic truly reaps the benefits of the elemental shield moves, Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles were split because of a McDonald's Happy Meal promotion and not technical limitations, etc.), I strongly disagree with your pick of 3+K for better level design. First of all, all of the borrowed zones in Mania are dramatically remixed, not just featuring different mechanics in Act 2 but each act having nearly completely original level layouts. If you're seriously claiming that these zones are merely "slight alterations" then I question your familiarity with the originals and whether you yourself have "played the hell out of those games." I HAVE. I've beaten 3+K 22 times since I first played it in April of this year (I assure you I absolutely wouldn't have if I didn't consider it to be a really great game.) Besides the borrowed aesthetics and returning mechanics and badniks, these ARE new zones and new experiences. Even if Mania had directly copied everything from previous titles, how does that affect the quality of the level design? Shouldn't that technically be discussed in its own category, perhaps creativity or artistry? Mania is far more consistently enjoyable than 3+K, without having zones like Marble Garden or Sandopolis, and each returning zone is an improvement over its original counterpart without exception. I just really value consistency in media and I feel that more people should as well. Whitehead's retro engine Mania is built off of is mechanically superior to the original engine, notably eliminating the annoying trajectory lock out of a spin dash jump. Also you keep reaching for the superficial claim that 3+K is longer than Mania simply because it has "14 zones" over Mania's 13 when in reality 2 of those 14 zones, Hidden Palace and Doomsday, are just boss fights. Not only is the average Mania zone larger than the average 3+K zone but Encore mode as well as the 5 playable characters really expand the breadth of Plus. Even if that weren't the case judging from the average longplay of each game Mania is still longer, as hard as it is to objectively quantify game length. The only aspect of 3+K that far surpasses that of Mania is the story, which doesn't really tip the balance in either direction as fun gameplay is paramount in my opinion. Also Sonic 3+K isn't even my favorite Genesis Sonic game, that goes to 2. lol
I prefer S3&K and I made a video about it, it's just my opinion. I don't have the time to play through any video game 22 times, I play these games and make these videos in my leisure time for fun. I've played through each Sonic title three to four times perhaps over the span of twenty years, to me that's a hell of a lot. There's no need to breath heavily and type away at a paragraph for an hour just to tell me how "wrong" I am.
You sound like you have a sensational amount of knowledge about these games and lots of time on your hands, perhaps you should make a video on this subject🤷♂

I hate when people say that Mania should have had more orginal zones because the game was supposed to be a throwback to classic Sonic and not a new game with completely new bosses and zones so that's not a valid criticism when the game was clearly marketed as a throwback game.
The trailers for the game advertised the new zones and features more prominently than the fact that this game was just a rehash if I remember correctly.

Sonic 3 only looks bad because of your own negativity against the game. Look at it this way. If we did not have Sonic 3, we probably wouldn’t have Sonic Mania Plus. Also, Sonic 3 is hard only when you make it look hard.
