  • Could a monster be lurking in our oceans? And no, we’re not talking about the Loch Ness Monster or the Megalodon, we’re talking about a creature you probably have never heard of. The Mosasaur. But what is a Mosasaur? Could it have survived the great extinction? And if it did, how would it change our oceans?

You see, megalodon and mosasaurus were around the same length but meg was 5 times heavier, it also had much more bulkier body and had way stronger bite force compared to the mosasaur. Unfortunately, mosasaur would be nothing but a regular lizard in front of the meg.

    • @kentkeeler9010
      @kentkeeler9010 Před 4 lety +23

      @@ssd3748 yeah, but Mosasaurus came before the Megalodon. Quite a few million years before. Had it not gone extinct, Megalodon likely would not have come to be because the Mosasaurus would have taken out all of the food needed to help sustain the evolutionary process the sharks would need to get as massive as they did

    • @ssd3748
      @ssd3748 Před 4 lety +7

      Kent Keeler but we also have to consider that mosasaurus would have likely to shrink his size after the kt extinction event. Simply because there was no was food source big enough to sustain the mosasaurus right after the extinction

    • @kentkeeler9010
      @kentkeeler9010 Před 4 lety +9

      @@ssd3748 that's true, but even so, the existence of an apex predator makes it difficult for another animal to evolve into another apex predator if they are found in the same environment or ecosystem.
      For example, in today's world, many people claim that Great Whites are the apex predator of the ocean. While this may be true in the southern hemisphere, the animal that ACTUALLY dominates the entire ocean and is the Orca. They can be found everywhere in the world. As far north as the arctic and as far south as Antarctica. The bonus is Great Whites have been shown to be taken down by Orcas and in rare cases, even eaten by them if a White is bold enough to attack a calf in a pod.
      In fact, the only records of TWO apex predators being in the same environment is entirely due to human intervening, an invasive species, for instance.
      So if Mosasaurus-an animal that was the apex predator of its time and found in all of the sea-never went extinct, it wouldn't provide any leeway for another animal to rise to the top of the food chain. The same would be true if Megalodon came before the Mosasaurus on the timeline of history. Even if they shrank, they would remain the apex predator.
      To add to this factor, the Orca rose to be the current apex predator because of an ancient ancestor, the Livaytan was a whale that hunted other smaller whale species as well as ate smaller fish. It existed around the same time as Megalodon, and was thought to be hunted by the massive shark. It is also linked to modern day sperm whales, blue whales & orcas, suggesting that it may be a common ancestor of all three species. So...with that being said, when the food supply of Megalodon dwindled, the Levaytan's did as well, but it was able to adapt to smaller food sources whereas the shark was not. So it shrank in size and evolved into three different branches of species.

    Haha!, you're correct concerning adaptations different from what we've seen in the ocean ecosystem. Whales would likely be smaller and faster. Sharks that would be hunted (like great whites) would probably develop thicker scales to offset the bite of the giant reptile (in fact, they would probably hunt in packs with the mosasaur as their prey). There would be other adaptations, as well.
    HOWEVER, you were incorrect about the mosasaur being a force for extinction. Except for when humans butt in, Nature tends to find a balance among the species in an ecosystem. When the mosasaur population increases, their prey populations would decrease due to the increase in mosasaurs needing more food. Conversely, with fewer prey animals to munch on, many mosasaurs would starve to death, and the reptiles' population would drop. Graphing the two populations, the graph would look like opposing sine waves.
    So, while it's fun to consider what-if scenarios, if you're looking at scenarios involving science, let's not leave out the science for speculation's sake.

    Mosasaurs lacks fins, this means that it's mobility is seriously lacking compared to dolphins and sharks.
    This also limits it's food source to big slow animals, since small fish would out maneuver it.
    With little choice for food, whatever animal that can sustain it would likely go extinct quickly, thus leading it to extinction due to the loss of food source.
