  • RWS Rifle Match is a favorite round. I use it whenever I can.
There are times where groups or bull targeting is going very well, when suddenly a 'flyer'! I often try to determine if skills and fundamentals were at fault. But usually there was no laxity of protocol or focus.
Today I wanted to shoot a box of RWS Rifle Match after documenting both rim thickness and round weight. It could have been any brand; Eley, Lapua, others.
The rifle is a Anschutz 1913 BR. Highly accurate and running very well with no evidence of carbon ring on bore scope check.
It was made a point to concentrate on fundamentals before each trigger pull, so shooter skills at the least were kept on balance.
Before groups began I made note of the rounds that were slight outliers in weight and/or rim thickness thinking there would be a definite finding on POI.
I found this to not be the case. I could not define a reliable pattern of variance with the two variables that could be measured. Of note, both brass and lead were undamaged for the entire box and lubrication grossly seemed consistent.
With the myriad of other possibilities that could affect round performance, it seems an unlikely chance of cracking the riddle of round dynamics for flyers. Barometric pressure, temperature, humidity, velocity, powder charge, primer composition, brass composition and thickness , lead alloy and bullet design, etc. All the stuff the manufacturers keep on top of.
So, after this small trial I feel confident in shooting the box at hand, knowing there is no 'stone left unturned' in search for identifying the elusive pre-shot 'flyer'.
There is only one sure fire way to shoot the most accurate and consistent round time after time. The manufacturers have always known this; the secret is in the check book or credit card! ;)

Curious 4th group fenonimal. A while ago 1 person said with all measuring and weighing the only thing out of what we can do is how uniform the base of the bullet is. Great vids mine is a 2013 . Cheers

We shoot a "cheap ammo" match at our club every Thursday. I once measured the rim thickness of five or six boxes of SK Pistol Match Special cartridges. Those measuring .0415 - .0425 shot very well while those measuring outside of those numbers had more than the usual number of fliers. I did not weight them. It's time consuming so I haven't repeated it.

Yes, It involves much time and effort for questionable or limited benefit. But it is interesting to check at least once.

Curious if you could identify by rim thickness and weight measurements the potential flyers or not? All your recordings appeared similar in variances. Also have you tried Wolf Match Extra? My model 1813 shoots that slightly better than RWS Rifle Match, but both ammo brands shoot very well. Nice shooting!

In this small trial of 50 rounds, I was not able to identify potential flyers pre-shot. Additionally, there was no reliable correlation between measurements of rim thickness and/or shot precision.

I weigh and rim thickness sort but more so with the lower grade match ammo choises like SK+ knowing the grading by the manufacture has deemed these less than idea, l get great confidence grouping similar weights together and same with rim thickness. I understand that there is no way of knowing where the variation with weight might be accounted for but it works for me and I get better scores as a result. I'm not trying to make great ammo out if it just better.

I'm new to the rimfire game and have been wanting to try RWS ammo for awhile. Finally got my hands on some RWS Rifle Match a few days ago and was very pleased with how it shot.

Hello again. I just got two bricks of the same RM and one of Pistol Match. I shot 10 shot groups of each (in poor wind conditions - very turbulent) with my 5 best rifles. Even allowing for wind induced fliers one can see that this ammo is both pleasing and frustrating in equal measure. It was OK in my two best rifles, a Vickers and Lithgow LA101, poor in a very reliable CZ457, and outstanding in a cheap plain 1962 Krico 300, 10 shot groups of 0.53" at 50Y but thats excluding one flier, was it wind, I doubt it!

"pleasing and frustrating in equal measure", indeed! RWS RM remains however my go to ammunition for range day and some club matches.

A lot of work for no real way to solve the problem of the random flyer. I wonder if this issue is related to the barrel, trigger, bolt, or firing pin? I use Eley Tenex and I get about one or two bad rounds per 100. They seem totally random and unpredictable. Very frustrating, but unfortunately I think that this may be a modern day dilemma. I honestly cannot recall this happening back in the mid to late 1970s when I was shooting competitively. Was there something different about the ammo back then in terms of consistency?

Yes, a needly effort that I will not do again! 😂. I highly suspected the outcome when I started this test, knowing the developers and engineers at the premium .22 ammunition manufacturers would have addressed this issue if there was a plausible remedy. As stated prior: " There is only one sure fire way to shoot the most accurate and consistent round time after time. The manufacturers have always known this; the secret is in the check book or credit card!" 😉.
