      Yes, it's always funny (peculiar) to see the stars of such now-famous films when they're only just making them! You can't believe that they didn't even exist then! It's sad that we seem to have lost the class and style of not only the film stars but even the TV programmes. Can you imagine anyone wearing evening dress for a panel show today! These are so enjoyable because they're funny, clever, gentle and clean. Talk about the 'good old days'! And I wasn't even born then. ☺️

    Total respect for Eva Marie Saint. I've been reading up on her life (and she's still going at 96, now the oldest living Academy Award winner). "North by Northwest" was being shot here in September 1958, but Eva had just given birth to her second child on July 18 of that same year! I'm so impressed with her gradual ascent to fame and by her 65-year marriage in a city (Hollywood) where it was anything but the norm.

    So beautiful that Eva Marie Saint made a point of stating that "North By Northwest" was written by Ernest Lehman. Interesting, though, that she was supposedly working on the picture in New York. In the film, she doesn't appear until the scene on the train, which must have been done in a studio. She's not in any of the N.Y. location shots. And did anybody notice that practically the entire train sequence shows them passing a lake on the left side. Longest lake in the world? And between New York and Chicago!?

      @preppysocks209 Před 5 lety +5

      @@CamhiRichard a lot of the "lake" is actually the Hudson River. Some of the landmarks pictured still remain. It is possible that some of the hotels or the auction house or the train station, where she appeared, although supposedly in Chicago, were actually filmed in NY.

      in addition, Hitchcock was not happy with the dresses that were designed for her. He wrote (and you can hear this in a TCM interview that Ben Mankiewicz did with EMS around 2011) that he took her to Bergdorf Goodman and allowed her to select her own wardrobe that would enhance her ability to play a "sexy spy lady."

      Bigfoot Mangiacavallo; as already pointed out that "lake" is the Hudson River. The actual location of Grand Central Terminal was filmed--the concourse--was filmed on location. The underground sequence of the platform and boarding the train was at the studio. You should especially note the Cary Grant is walking on the red carpet of The 20th Century Limited that was indeed used for the boarding of that train in real life.The Hotel that Grant is spirited out of by the two thugs is actually The Plaza Hotel, still around.

    I do remember the Kellogg's "variety pak", the small boxes of cereals with the dotted lines where you would cut and fan out to pour your milk into. My father would bring them on camping trips with the six of us kids, so we could chose our cereals.

    • @gymnastix
      @gymnastix Před 8 lety +2

      +Dick Wilson Yes, there were once four product lines of Kellogg's miniature-packs' cereals. They were -- Snack Pak (6 boxes, kids' line cereals with more sugar), Fun Pak (8 boxes, also kids' line), Variety Pak (10 boxes, mix of healthy and kids' lines; now marketed simply as "Kellogg's Variety"), and Jumbo Assortment (18 boxes, also mix of healthy and kids' lines).
      And by "healthy" I mean traditional "adult" cereals such as "Corn Flakes," "Product 19," "Shredded Wheat," and "Special K." I guess "Rice Krispies" would be considered a kids' line (because of its "Snap, Crackle & Pop" marketing), although it is lower in sugar than "Cocoa Krispies" and certainly also enjoyed by many adults.
      Today, I think only "Kellogg's Variety" pack remains. But there is also a 30-boxes' assortment of Kellogg's miniature cereals at the various warehouse chain stores (BJ's, Costco, and Sam's Club).
      Additionally, General Mills has its "Breakfast Pack" of 10 cereals. I eat "Honey Nut Cheerios" in regular box size three or four days a week already. But, when I am in the mood, I can still enjoy some "Trix" or "Lucky Charms" (am I imagining it, or have the marshmallows become smaller and less tasty?).
      I am unsure if Post still has its "Post-Tens" variety packs. I used to enjoy "Alpha-Bits," "Crispy Critters," "Honey Comb," "Rice Krinkles," and "Sugar Crisp," as well the classic "Raisin Bran." I understand Post no longer manufactures "Krinkles," but that "Fruity Pebbles" is its descendant. As I recall, "Krinkles" was similar to Kellogg's "Rice Krispies," only sugar-coated. I also always wanted to try "Post Toasties."
      Did Quaker ever have its own mini cereals' line? This would include "Cap'n Crunch," "Life Cereal," "Puffed Rice (and Wheat)," "Quaker Oh's," and "Quisp," among other of the QO lines.
      For whatever it's worth, I prefer the "Kellogg's Variety" to the General Mills "Breakfast Pack." And I also prefer Kellogg's "Cocoa Krispies" to General Mills' "Cocoa Puffs."

      Careful! You might get a reputation as a cereal killer!
      Other than the chocolate, Cocoa Puffs and Cocoa Krispies aren't exactly equivalents. The Puffs are corn based and the Krispies are rice based. The Trix you enjoy are basically fruit-flavored Kix, while Cocoa Puffs are chocolate-flavored Kix.
      There was also a sugar-coated Kix based cereal called Jets. It was discontinued in 1974. I remember a commercial that promoted three of the cereals that had the line: "Kix ... Trix ... yum, I like Jets."
      I couldn't find that commercial, but I did find this one for Jets, starring my favorite crime-fighting duo, Rocky and Bullwinkle.
      czcams.com/video/Vd5aW1MC1Og/video.html
      Getting back to the comparison, the one advantage of Rice Krispies and Cocoa Krispies is that by adding some marshmallow you can make treats. Krispie Treats were part of the volume of Christmas cookies my mom (eventually with my help) made every year. It would be difficult to make cookies out of Kix or Cocoa Puffs without pulverizing them first.

In NYC at the time, first graders went to school longer than the half day of kindergarten, but shorter than a full day (which started in second grade, including a lunch period for the first time in my schooling).
    When we were dismissed, we sang a song with lyrics that are a variation of a song that starts with "Now run along home and jump into bed." Because it was early in the afternoon, our song went:
    "Now run along home and have a good lunch; change your clothes and then join the bunch." I forget the next line, but I remember it ended with "and don't you forget: do your homework and then go to bed." One of my classmates, Todd Greenberg, always changed it to "watch television, do your homework and then go to bed." We wouldn't be watching WML, however. It would have been cartoons or "Superman" or some other kid favorite show.

Yes there were a lot of social injustices back then. But there were also a lot of people trying to change things. I can only imagine 60 years from now- when future generations look at our behaviors and how we spoke and treated each other - whether on social media or otherwise. I believe it was a reference to Bennett Cerf's role as one of the judges at the Miss America pageant which had been held in Atlantic City, The winner, Mary Ann Mobley (who went on to be an actress) was Miss Mississippi prior to winning the Miss America contest. John Daly is giving Bennett a hard time (teasingly) for the choice. I'm not quite sure why though as neither Miss New York nor Miss Massachusetts were in the top ten. The only top ten finalist from the NY / New England area was Miss Connecticut. Miss Mobley's home state, however, does explain John Daly's pun about Bennett's name being mud.
