    I would love to see something similar to this as a replacement for an USG in the future… wondering if UI will ever consider this as not everyone has space on their homes for a rack mountable and the all in one dream machine/router is not actually a fit

    • @jimporter
      @jimporter Před 2 lety

      No not this device, you want the UISP Console (in early access) which could easily be a replacement for the USG especially if dropped to 4x1gb ports but keeping the 10gbe and sfp+ ports for wan and switch connection. Then you could go to a home+ (note my naming doesn’t use pro) version with 8x2.5gbe ports. It is one of the oddities than a pro version should have less ports as most likely acting as a router it will just hand off switching duties to a switch but would have more requirement for things like redundant power. Ubiquiti really do seem to have their knickers in a twist when trying to figure out what their customer base seems to want, rather than what they want their customer base to have.

    Hi Cody, Great video. I know I've mentioned this before but do you ever see Ubiquiti improving their VPN options? I have an annoying problem where by Avaya IP Phones need pure IPsec to establish a VPN connection - it's not compatible with L2TP over IPsec. Each time I see you post a new product review I have my fingers crossed that one day they will resolve this...

      UniFi switches typically do support 802.3 AF/AT/(Sometimes BT) power standards that most PoE devices are. WISP line devices for Ubiquiti run on 24v Passive, either 2 pair or 4pair, and sometimes 48v and 54v variations of the same.

      This device supports POE on all ports, with options for 4 pair POE as well. Since it is 27v vs 24v, it can support some of the newer LTU and AirFiber 60 devices as well. Many of the new radios that require 4pair, would be underpowered on 2 pair 24v.

  • @jasonluong3862
    @jasonluong3862 Před 2 lety +1

    I am confused. The initial adoption of the router is done via Bluetooth on the smartphone. This is the extent of the smartphone involvement? Then all subsequent management has to be done on the controller in the cloud? It is not even possible to manage this UISP router (and switches) locally in a controller on a desktop or Cloudkey?
    The PoE is passive 27v. If I plug in anything that is AF or AT, would this router fry those devices because of the voltage?
    In a side note, it’s fairly clear that Ubiquity plans to discontinue the Edgerouter including my favorite EdgerouterX with this family of UISP routers. Can you do a brief video on the differences between these two devices?

    • @SeijinSA
      @SeijinSA Před 2 lety

      This for Ubiquiti's ISP equipment, be it AirMax/AirFiber/Gigabeam and so forth. Most all of them are 24-48v Passive (27v allowing higher amperage requirements on some 2 pair 30w devices), and will not support AF/AT standards. See also the 4pair options. The phone is required for pairing it to UISP, and it can not be controlled nor managed via UniFi devices/controllers. Some settings are able to be managed via bluetooth during device boot on AirMax/AirFiber/Gigabeam/UISP devices.

    • @jasonluong3862
      @jasonluong3862 Před 2 lety

      @@SeijinSA I am always nervous about installing PoE injectors that is not AT/AF. Since I have no control in who will plug their expensive computers into these PoE network appliances, there is a chance that they may damage their computer. With AT/AF, at least the injector does a preliminary sensing before sending dangerous power to the end devices. Ubiquity actually sells adapters that convert passive PoE to AT/AF. Why not just make all its PoE devices using these standards? There is even a new PoE standard that offers higher power than AT. So Ubiquity can include that for more power-hungry end devices if AT cannot produce enough juice.
      I cannot seem to find any new Edgerouter X anymore. Initially I had thought it was due to the global supply chain issue, but after so many months of waiting, it’s clear that Ubiquity has discontinued it in favor of something. I don’t know what the replacement is.

    • @SeijinSA
      @SeijinSA Před 2 lety

      @@jasonluong3862 Exactly why this product line should only be used for ISP/MicroPop deployments with matching hardware. You would be much better served by a PFSense or Mikrotik solution for home or office work.
      The idea that you can not even log into a webpage to configure this router w/o a hosted controller, be it local or cloud should be enough warning to avoid it unless you are already in its product stack. This device should not exist in a small business where the EdgeRouter series was passable for an entryline product, that still would require CLI access to enable most features supported by other lines in an easier method.

    • @jimporter
      @jimporter Před 2 lety

      You could if you just want a router but it won’t exist in the UniFi single pane of glass (just like the edgerouters) and it also doesn’t contain a controller so you would need a cloudkey or other to manage any other UniFi kit. Same as if you replaced a UDM with any other make of router.

  • @SeijinSA
    @SeijinSA Před 2 lety +1

    This is a UISP product, not UniFi, nor EdgeMax. UISP is entirely controller driven, with config after the fact optional via SSH. These devices are meant for an WISP market. And then are very focused only for the UISP line. While there is some overlap in hosted controller compatiblity with EdgeMax devices talking to the same controllers, this device is the next generation and in some cases a replacement for micropop routers, while also supporting OSPF and AirMax/AirFiber/GigaBeam/LTU devices. The UISP Console is your 10Gb option with built in controller. But again, these devices are very much intended for Ubiquiti's ISP line of equipment, with less control/management than older EdgeMax series Routers and Switches.
    Yes you can solo host one of these with other UniFi equipment behind it but it does not integrate into that controller. You will need at least 10 UISP/AirMax/AirFiber/Gigabeam/EdgeMax/EdgeSwitch devices to use a free cloud hosted UISP controller 1.4.x or later to use this product, unless you self host. It can only be setup and managed via this controller, until you gain and enable SSH credentials to it. This is not a great nor typical device you would want in most cases unless you are a Small ISP or Small WISP.
    While it is a very interesting product in that space, it is very much for it's own ecosystem alone.

      Thanks for the reply. I’ve been asking this for awhile now. Because it’s impossible to get a router from Ubiquity. Amazon sellers price gouge dream machine routers for $600, and not every client wants to spend $500 for a UXG which is also sold out now. So it seems you get A LOT for your money with this router. If it can do simple routing then setting this up on our self hosted server along with the unifi controller seems like a slam dunk Versus using an entire different company.
