  • Are we starting a bird series? I think I smell a watercolor bird series and I’m not mad about it one bit! For today’s tutorial, we are spreading our watercolor wings and painting a beautiful golden oriole. This male oriole's beautiful, bright color and patterned wings are the perfect excuse to explore using layers as a watercolor technique.

Hi, Katrina - I've been subscribed to your channel for a long time, and this is the first thing I've seen posted by you in forever. I hope to see more of you, as I love your work. Thank you!

You might want to check my channel and make sure you are subscribed- I try to post a video every two weeks. I did skip the month of July this year but that is the first month in three years!

I may try the full tutorial again, but I have found that most people won’t sit through a full tutorial. Even this video was pushing it in length!

This is absolutely beautiful! Happy I found your channel. A beautiful male Oriole has been visiting our feeder in our garden lately and I feel lucky! It's the coolest looking bird. You really captured the perfect yellow and I love how you warmed up the black. Your explanations are very helpful. Thank you for sharing.

This is so beautiful Katrina! 💕 Yes, yes, yes, please continue doing tutorials like this only maybe a little longer!!! I would have loved watching you do the flowers along with the bird. Do the flowers come with the printable? If not, would you consider adding it? Also, I would have loved seeing you do the eye. Maybe next time you could do a full tutorial. And if it's possible, it would be nice to see the palette as you paint so we know how little or how much water you're adding.

    • @katrinacrouch

Hi Laina! Thank you so much for the feedback!
The flowers are not included with the printable. This completed art print will be for sale in my shop soon so I couldn’t include the full piece this time around! Maybe in future I will include more complicated prints.
And yes, I assumed that I had included the eye in the filming, but I couldn’t find it! As I mentioned, I was mourning (and frankly, crying most of the time) while I was painting this so I didn’t always have my wits about me. I’m so sorry about that!
I’m thinking about creating a specific tutorial for bird eyes-would that be helpful?

@@katrinacrouch Aww, I'm so sorry that you were grieving as you painted this. I was watching this while my husband was watching tv, so I watched, but had not listened except the opening comments; I had the volume muted after that. Your work is beautiful as always and I so enjoy your tutorials. Thanks for sharing them with us along with your tips! Condolences at the loss of your grandfather. 😥 What a blessing you have fond memories of him.

Lovely! Concerned about intellectual property etc... If I draw and paint the things you show, does it belong to you or me?

I find it helpful to think of it like working off of one of the Renaissance master’s work. It is common to study and copy the work of Michelangelo or Raphael to learn and grow, but you would never turn around a sell a copy of one of their pieces, right?
Same logic applies here. You can always study and learn from the experience of others, but it’s just that: a study. Free for personal use. Gift to a friend, hang it in your home, etc
That’s why I try so hard to show the WHY behind the HOW. Not just step by step, but the logic behind it so that you can take what you learn and apply it to your own work.
      Does that help?

So it’s only against your teaching philosophy if it’s free, but it’s good as long as people are paying for it? That just seems like an odd kind of morality.

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  Před rokem

I stand by what I said: if you want to improve greatly and quickly, and you want to be a fine artist, skip the templates and crutches. Otherwise, who cares? Do what you want.
