  • Best-known for a fur-lined teacup, the Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim (1913-1985) was a free-spirit whose work spanned half a century. Correspondent Serena Altschul reports on a new retrospective of Oppenheim's work, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

I'm glad Sunday Morning has profiled this fabulous, completely non-commerical, long-deceased artist, who doesn't have a pull-at-your-heartstrings story. In other words, there is no "gimmick" here to grab a viewers' interest except the quality of the work. Oppenheim is hugely famous and admired in the art world but little known by the general public. I urge viewers to look her up online to find out more about her, check out a book of hers at your local library and, best, of course, see her work in person. Oppenheim, who said she approached each new piece she worked as though she had never made anything artistic before is very special indeed.

The fur covered eating utensils inspired me to make an electrical outlet-bottomed, fully filled bathtub. But, alas, not great fame from that. Maybe somebody else had done it already and it was just an obvious cliche. One has to be widely traveled to know such things at the point of "inspiration". ;-7

You can see at the 1:15 mark her mother looks just like Casey Neistat's wife Candice.
