  • Sicily’s Mount Etna is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, but scientists say eruptions aren’t the only major threat posed by this smoldering peak. According to a new study from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, Etna is slowly sliding toward the sea, raising the prospect that it may suddenly collapse and trigger a massive tsunami that could devastate the region around the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

If it does collapse into the sea it could be the worst tsunami in history. The worst ones ever have been due to land collapsing in the ocean, not earthquakes.

Not much of a risk when you research fully. It would be worse for areas closer.

That would indicate it's composition is magnetic or iron. It's a volcano so that's highly unlikely considering it's made of volcanic rock and ash.

It is not going to disappear at once.
It is because Etna should have been extinct for hundreds thousands of years, instead is still active, surpassing by far the average lifespan of a volcano. But it's rock is still ancient, so at certain point it rots. And the volcano start to fall in pieces. But we will never see a St.Helens like landslide in the sea, anything like that. It will fall in pieces, little by little.

    • @travishartman5662

@@corcon6976 stone crumbles and weakens with age. The older layers below are the first to crumble. With time all mountains turn to sand. It's very unlikely though that the entire mountain would break loose and slide into the ocean miles away.

If you are going to cite the 1980 eruption of St. Helens you should've noted the bulge that preceded the collapse. IF a similar situation is going to develop, we will have a substantial warning at least a month ahead, and very possibly several months. I'm also confident that the good geologists and civil engineers of Italy, and Sicily particularly, are aware of and tracking shifts or changes in the land like uplift or subsidence that precede an event like this. We can calculate useful estimates of when the friction holding all the rocks and strata will be overcome by its weight and become unstable. I'm not implying we can know exactly what that is, I don't think we have a perfect picture of the structures inside the whole mountain, but we can plug in ranges of values to find minimum necessary conditions. Worrying about this happening is a poor use of insomnia time, which is saying something 😂
