Coleman’s control of the saxophone is second to none !
This is the kind of music that you parents turn your kids on to. As the late great Charles Mingus once said:"Let my children hear music".
George Coleman deserves much more recognition as a master of his instrument.
Not only that but he's a master number 11 like me! But a far better musician than myself and most.
Sam Jones was simply.... GREAT
He has been great for 25 years preceding this concert. As were Cedar, Billy and George.

Thanks for sharing this historic footage/concert. I'm surprised to see they played the standard 'Firm Roots', which would only be released a year later on the album 'Eastern Rebellion II'. Love their version of 'Naima', like a Soul Jazz meets Latin/Bossa hybrid groove. George Coleman at the top of his powers and the whole band chemistry incredible. Cedar Walton was a great pianist and composer, and the rhythm section of Sam Jones and Billy Higgins is swinging, alert and tasteful, w/ some nice textures all around. LOL @32:22 - That orange mixing desk is totally 1970s.

Ah yes, in 1976 I was a young person chasing music and had the opportunity to hear this Eastern Rebellion group and some variations on it - IIRC with David Williams instead of Sam Jones on the acoustic bass and Bob Berg substituting for George Coleman on saxophones. Nobody had a more gorgeous sound on the cymbals than Billy Higgins!
This is grown folks music!!! Real jazz!!!

Overtones used as false fingerings, I think the first one is G and then the overtone on low C

Cedar just wasn't able to get this same feel with Bob Berg on the saxophone.
but the band with Cliff Jordan was great too!
oh man you have to listen to "Third Set" cedar walton quarted with bob berg it swings soooo hard its my favorite jazz album
Different maybe, but just as great, if not better. Bob Berg really played his best with Cedar and attracted new, younger audience.
The sax players that follow him never came close
