    I agree you're the main reason I went with packout to organize my bits and other things. I saw you on vcg's video and loved the set up. From there I got an organizer, small tool box with drill/impact in it, and a large toolbox for the circular saw and other tools. The bit bins and your videos is what made me bite the bullet on buying a 3d printer. Hats off to you and Ben!

  • @tomj528
    @tomj528 Před 3 lety +3

    The funny thing is that 60 years ago most guys would build an entire house with little more than a handsaw, hammer, level, ruler/tape measure, a yankee screwdriver, Crescent wrench and a nailset. I've been using a lot of hand tools lately and I've found that they're actually faster and easier for most tasks rather than dragging all of the power tools out. The exception being drilling and driving more than a few screws. It's easy to see that a few hand tools and a cordless drill/driver set up will handle almost everything and fit into a single, smaller toolbox. I have such a box under the backseat of my truck and it's amazing what I can do with just the tools within.

    • @tomj528
      @tomj528 Před 3 lety

      @J Whitley Compare the time and effort it takes most contractors to set up, charge batteries, trips back to the truck/trailer, chasing down a tool on the job site, knocking everything back down and don't forget the weight of it all. I'm not sure how much planing you're doing but for a few edges a well tuned hand plane does the job in less time than having to go grab and set up even a cordless one and then there's the expense for a tool that may be used very little. I don't know about you but the only planing I've ever had to do is to clean up a few cut edges, ease a corner or two and plane down a door. All of which is very easy to do with a hand plane and one could argue that it does a better, more precise job. Interesting that you mention the Sawzall as I just had to cut roughly 30 long 2"x6" in half to get them out and down to the dump. I stacked them and grabbed my Sawzall thinking it would make quick work of the job with the new blade I installed and found that it wasn't a good choice as the blade was binding and it was much more effort than the small toolbox handsaw I had been using to cut them. I couldn't use a circular saw without removing a ton of nails. So it was back to the handsaw which sawed through them in no time, leaving me wishing I hadn't wasted the time and effort of retrieving, setting up and putting away the Sawzall. My point is that builders used to be able to do the same job with much less equipment that fit into a small tool box/tote that held everything they needed compared to the huge array of modular storage rigs, trucks and trailers of today and were independent of having power on the job site as well...something that anyone that's worked a summer or two in the North woods in the 1980's would appreciate. I think that most today would be surprised at how well and easily hand tools work to do many of the jobs they tackle on a daily basis. As I originally said, if you've got to drill/drive a lot of screws I'm grabbing a power tool the same as if I have to make multiple cuts on nail free lumber, etc., but I just marvel at the difference in the number of power tools/tools "needed" in a relatively short span of time.

    • @jimbarron8688
      @jimbarron8688 Před 2 lety +1

      Can't argue your point however the cordless tools available today make life a lot easier. There are a lot of tools that seem silly to many but are vital to others. When you need it, you need it, especially once you know it's out there. That being said tool whores do walk among us.

    Fantastic video! One thing that I think would be a great product is a set of templates of various tools - Milwaukee first, and then maybe DeWalt and maybe others. The template would be thin and you would put it on the Kaizan Foam and trace around the template. It would be a lot easier than tracing around a bulky tool.

    • @JakeOfALL
      @JakeOfALL  Před 3 lety

      this defiantly could be done, one issue I see Is it would take time, lots of time. Is this something you would think people would be willing to pay for?

    • @timroscoe4519
      @timroscoe4519 Před 3 lety +1

      JakeOfALL I know I would be willing to pay for a set of templates. It doesn’t have to be every tool, but all the popular ones would be a great start. Couple of ideas - if you know anyone at Milwaukee Tool, maybe they would share a CAD drawing of the various tools. A full size drawing would go a long way. You could use the drawing to generate a cut line from the outline. Maybe add 1/8” to make it easier to insert/remove the tool. Then cut the templates on a laser out of acrylic. You could also label each template with the Milwaukee model number and what it is. If you can’t get a CAD file, I think you can build some type of simple light table. Put the tool on the table and then take a picture of it. Adjust the exposure/contrast of the picture until it’s just a black and white picture of the tool. Then you could use that picture to generate a cut line as before. It would take a few tries to get the scaling correct and the camera would have to be nice and perpendicular to the light table.

    Holy crap, this just blew my mind!!! 😯 Milwaukee had its 75th Anniversary tool editions right at the time I was first building out my shop, so that really turned me on to making Milwaukee my standard for regular-use tools. I have been pleasantly surprised to see them keep upping the bar with their wireless tools, and have since been focusing on the Fuel line as a new standard. I have noticed the pack-out systems in passing, but haven't really given them a good look until today. I am blown away by the versatility and efficiency of them coupled with the mods you have shown here. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!!! Fortunately, I am setting up my first 3D printer this weekend, so I think I know what I will be working on to break it in and get some basic skills honed with it.
    Do you have some filament recommendations for this purpose?!? Nice video, I am going to have to keep an eye on your channel now!!!

    Milwaukee should come out with a packout crate with both side can open to access tools, instead of removing what’s on top of the crate.

    If you're 3D printing those attachments for the packouts, you should CNC the Kaizen inserts for the Milwaukee tools and even some generic ones for socket sets! Socket and wrench organizers are something I'd buy for my work truck!!!
