  • In this video I show you how to do a full service on a Briggs And Stratton 500 E Petrol Lawnmower Engine.
We service the new style plastic bowl type carburetor on this Briggs And Stratton 500E , clean the air filter, set the valves and check the kill switch as well as changing the oil and much, much more!
During the servicing of this Briggs And Stratton 500 E Petrol Lawnmower engine I test out Briggs And Stratton customer service and I go on a RANT!!
I've decided to either keep this Masport Mower or mail it to Casey Neistat (BIG CZcamsr) just for fun.
Servicing this Briggs And Stratton 500 E wasn't as straight forward as it should have been as I couldn't find a service manual, so massive thanks to my subscribers and youtube channel Taryl fixes all!!

@Mower Man - I cannot thank you enough for this video. The maintenance part was great for those who don't know much about this engine but the gold for me personally was the info on the clearances for the valves. I have been trying to get this mower started for 2 weeks. I have replaced armatures, spark plugs, cleaned out the carburetor twice, removed the flywheel to check the flywheel key and checked all the linkages to make sure they were operating as expected with zero results. I was scratching my head for ages to the point I was going to dump the lawn mower and get a new one. My valves had zero clearance and screwed TIGHT. Made the adjustments and got it going pretty much after a few pulls.
You are a legend for finding out the clearances!
Thank you very much, very grateful. 🙏

Have a mower with a 500E and after 10 years it was finally misfiring and bogging down on the littlest amount of grass. Took it apart and the jets were almost fully clogged. Cleaned it up and put it back together and it runs like new. I'd say this plastic carb gets the job done. I bet it will be good for another 10 years. Nice informative video!

That mower is exactly the same Masport 470 special for bunnings in Australia sells for $449 au which is regarded as cheap mower over here. Im sure it came from Bunnings over in uk .
The one lever height control is what all our mowers come with.
i did get hold of a Masport deck and catcher put a engine on it and found with dry grass drought conditions was blowing clippings from catcher where it mounted to the deck . and the wheels were not the normal double ball bearing types we normally have.
We normally have the kill switch work from the throttle control but the system you use in uk is creeping in was on a POPE lawnmower was able to convert with older parts on a classic B&S engine to work off the throttle.
Your engine is sadly the way B&S is going. No support made of plastic and it even says just top up your oil never have to do an oil change.
Your doing a great job for those people who end up with this engine and wish to maintain it to maximise the life. Cheers..
P.S. did you get the mulching plug that it would have had from new.

So today I drained the tank, old gas, and cleaned the carb. I used a whole big can of starting fluid on it. Then used the air hose like you did. Put it back together and gave it a prime and it started right up. But it would not stop. I forgot to put the kill switch wire back on. Took it back a part put the kill switch back on. Then it would not start. Primed it some more still would not start. As I started to take cover off I noticed I forgot to put the spark plug wire back on. Put it back on and the first pull it started up. Runs a little rough. The air filter was so nasty I did Not put it back on. I washed it out with gas and then in hot soapy water and hung it out to dry. Perhaps tomorrow after it has had time to dry out I will put some oil on it and try it again. I am hoping it will smooth out and run better. Just wanted to say a Big Thank You, to you.

Happy birthday to the wife! Great video. I had a 450 on the bench 2 weeks ago. Like you, I found no numbers. Scanned the code sticker and Briggs website was and still is down. Adjusted mine to .006, but it still has issues. I’ve been through the carb, even changed it out with another one. I guess I’ll do a leak down test and check the governor adjustment. It’s a curb pick, and I’ve got more lawn equipment than I can deal with. It’s just down on power, irritates me to no end not being able to get it right, yet. Stuff to keep me busy. Cheers.

The mower itself looks like it's made very well.
The only issue I have heard about on another CZcams channel, is the main jet in these plastic carbs. The main jet port is very tiny, and apparently susceptible to getting dirt lodged init. Some guys actually have had to ream out the main jet slightly with a very tiny jet drill bit.
And Happy birthday to the Mower Woman!

I picked up one of these at a yard sale last weekend. Hate to hear you are having trouble finding the model number. But at least now I know I am not the only one. It took me a while to find it. The 500 e, the one I got, I found it. It is Hard to see. It is on the side of the engine block, same side as the muffler. Look to the left on the block. It looks to be painted on more so than stamped. Not sure IF the first number on mine was faded off or what. It looks to be 9p602 0076F1. After looking on line for hours I learned it starts with a ' 0 " It is suppose to read like this, 09p602 0076F1.
For them to put a printed peace of paper or paint a model number on a mower is damn stupid. And they do the same thing with riding mowers. Hell of thing with out those numbers you can not get parts. Most likely someone has already told you this but it might help someone else. Also I was not getting any spark. I took the coil off, cleaned it and the flywheel. I re gapped the coil with one business card. It would not spark. Took it off and used two business cards. Sprayed some starting fluid and the third pull she tried to start. Now I got to work on the carb.

It was given to me and it didn't have the air filter and lid plus it would leak a little bit of gas out of that spot....well with everything else going on I used it and used it then the last time I used it it was getting hot super fast and I was having to give it oil within hour of use and honestly I just wanted my yard to be mowed getting over breaking my foot and I didn't stop fast enough and it froze up... I couldn't pull the rope anymore... Someone said that the o rings burned up but I have a couple of books that I am looking at with diagrams of lawnmowers and I am not sure about any o rings.. I see gaskets.. I just don't know how much of it do I need to take apart, replace and or fix before I can put it together and it be usable again

Hi, thanks for great video, with help of your video I was able to do some what service and able to start the lawn mower which was cutting off (dying) right after start. I I used a wire to clear the holes, however the engine feels like breathing and easily cuts off with a little extra load on grass. I wonder if there is any other reason why this engine feels like breathing.. When I pump the red button and push air, it runs bit better. I need some help to make sure engine is running with full power. Thanks

My piece of wire is an acetylene torch cleaner which goes from very very fine, to quite thick and they all are mildly serrated so will remove gummy deposits as you can see from the carb cleaning videos on my channel. (A cement mixer and a wacker)

There's nothing wrong with these plastic carburetors. If you're having issues with the jets clogging, there's still room to fit an in-line fuel filter. If Briggs did that in the first place, it might've saved the company's reputation from these engines not starting.

Hi. I replaced the carburator on our mower. It looks almost the same as the mower in your video.
The spark plug that I took out as the mower wasn't starting was soaked in petrol.
I'm afraid to replace the spark plug and try to start it
How do I fix that? The new carburator needs adjusting.
But we're scared to start it up. We don't want it to explode. If we start it up with a new spark plug, will it explode?

Great video. Thanks a lot. Do you have the valve clearance in mm i.s.o. inches? If I understand well, the clearance should be between 1/4000 and 1/8000 of an inch. That means something like 0.0005mm which is almost zero. My little tool cannot measure 0.0005mm. It starts at 0.05mm.
    I'm in Belgium.
    Many thanks.

I don’t like those engines much. All the ones I’ve seen have issues with hunting up and down. It’s to do with the plastic inlet manifold piece which warps with the heat and stops sealing properly. Regarding the throttle setup, they aren’t allowed to be sold new in the uk like that as eu regs state they must stop the blades spinning when handles are let go of. You’ll probably find it’s a New Zealand import or something. Nice made machines but they do cost enough

Mower Man, I am trying to bring a Honda Harmony 2 HRR216. I don’t think her previous owners ever cleaned her undercarriage. I’ve made some progress on it by using a plastic paint scraper (a metal scraper may be to harsh). A thin concrete layer of grass remains. What should I do/use to completely remove the remaining grass from under her deck?
