Great video John. I live in New Zealand and read a book on NZ hunting rifles. Apparently prior to WWII the 44-40 was (is that similar to 44 special?) was a very common deer hunting rifle in New Zealand. Only changed once the surplus Lee Enfield 303 rifles showed up after WWII. Yeah, the 44-40 is sort of like a slightly bottleneck 44 special. My Dad had an old Mexican copy of a Winchester lever action in 44-40, he had the chamber reamed out for 44 magnum, worked pretty good! Take care, John.
Unique powder is one of the old standyby's for .44 special but people also used 2400. Power Pistol is very similar burn rate to Unique which is somewhat strange because they are made by the same company. HP-38 is just a little bit faster than Unique. 240 grains at 1000 fps in .44 special is a pretty substantial load.
I have had great results using Power Pistol in various handguns and per the published load data, gives high velocities in 44 Special. 2400 is another good choice. I did this video to show that a 44 Special can have higher velocities than what many assume. Thanks for watching!
You make the most informative and interesting videos ! I really appreciate your use of a Chronograph for those of us who do not have one. I have the Rossi 92 with the 16 inch barrel and some of the HP-38 and sure does look like a good Low recoil load for the 44 special which I will be using exclusivly in the Carbine as I really like the idea of a big bullet,low recoil,and low noise factor. and still plenty of power . I really appreciate this video ! Should be pretty economical as well at only 5.5 grains of the HP-38 at over 1,270 shots from one pound of powder ! Question for you John,how many rounds of 44 Special will fit in your Henry compared to how many of the 44 Magnums ? Thank's again for the video
My Henry holds 7 rounds of 44 mag, but my magazine is about an inch shorter than the barrel. I can probably squeeze 8 rounds of 44 Special in. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!
Hi John The Bullet's that I bought to use are from "Matt's Bullets" who has a lot of different Bullet styles and Caliber's. I bought a Hundred of his 250 Grain HollowPoint Plain Base 20:1 Lead (10 Brinell Hardness)as I want good expansion at low velocity. Do you have Acess to Data that shows about what velocity can be expected from the 5.5 Grain Load of HP-38 but with the 250-255 Grain Lead bullet ? If you do I sure would appreciate it. I am thinking that the slightly heavier bullet that I am using will be a little slower than the 240 Grain that you are using just would like to know about how much slower. Thank's

I have a total RCBS single stage setup. I only used RCBS dies to date. But will be eyeballing those Lee dies to see if they work as well or better.
The separate crimp die looks interesting….
Seating and crimping in separate steps often times makes more accurate ammo, the Lee Factory Crimp Die is very popular.
