- After a 2-2 draw in the First Leg of their UEFA Cup Semi-final against Hungarian side Ferencvaros, Wolves were back at Molineux two weeks later for the return fixture on 19th April 1972.
On their way to the semi-final, Wolves had travelled extensively throughout Europe (including a lengthy trip behind the Iron Curtain to play Carl Zeiss Jena) and had particularly excelled in their conquest of Juventus at the quarter-final stage - a second leg victory at Molineux before a crowd of 40,421 followed a highly creditable 1-1 draw in Turin.
The 1971-72 season was the first full season of the potent Derek Dougan and John Richards strike partnership that plundered over ninety goals between them in 1971-72 and the following season - a total that was helped immeasureably by the creative brilliance of winger Dave Wagstaffe. 'The Doog' was at his most prolific in Europe; his impressive nine goal haul in the 1971-72 UEFA Cup competition ultimately helped Wolves to an appearance in the final against Tottenham Hotspur ( • Wolves v Tottenham Hot... ) and would ensure his place as the all-time leading goalscorer for Wolves in European competition with a total of twelve goals.
Ferencvaros, managed by Ferenc Csanádi, included in their team the legendary centre-forward Flórián Albert. 'The Emperor' was joint top-scorer at the 1962 World Cup with four goals for Hungary and subsequently became European Footballer of the Year in 1967. He spent his entire career at Ferencvaros and scored a remarkable 256 goals in 351 appearances for Fradi and 31 goals in 75 matches for his national team.
With commentary of the brief highlights provided by Hugh Johns, over 28,000 at Molineux witnessed a dramatic match with Ferencvaros awarded a late penalty and the chance to draw level on aggregate...
Have waited 40 years to see this one! Wonderful Wolves. Great Ferencvaros team too!
Feel the same is Singwolf. Fantastic stuff, Mercian, and what an atmosphere. As a 11/12- year-old I must have been at all of the home UEFA Cup games that year. The one that sticks in the mind is the win against Juventus and Danny Hegan's wonderful goal.
I was there , great times at WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS !
Mega uploading! Thanks for this! C'mon Ferencvaros, Go Wolves!
Two sides which used to be among the top in Europe. One of them maybe climbing up now again from the basement...
Thanks Mercian for uploading. Hajrá Fradi! Go Wolwes!
Good day. Like and thanks from Baku city
Wow! The Wolves were quick out of the blocks!
thank you for this, hajra Fradi!!
The pictures here are from ITV Sport and the commentator's Hugh Johns.
Along the way to the final we played - Fc Den Haag, Porto, Ferencvaros of course, Belenenses, Juventus, Spurs in the final! I think it was either Belenenses or Den Haag, they scored three own goals at Molineux and i remember The Doog after the third own goal going up to the unfortunate rival player and patting him on the back! Can't remember if it was the same player who had the misfortune to claim this surreal hat trick? Pretty sure it was Den Haag!
Nope, we played Belenenses and Porto in different European campaigns.
We played Academica Coimbra, ADO Den Haag, Carl Zeiss Jena, Juventus and Ferencvaros before meeting Tottenham in the final. John McAlle scored two of his only three Wolves goals (a third in the same week against Man City in the League Cup) in over 500 appearances for the club in those two matches against Academica and never bagged a goal in over 400 League matches!
The great Hugh Johns in the commentary box. Those were the days.
How much of a bottler was that player at 47 secs?
What a team
Parkes had saved a penalty in the first leg as well - then Spurs did us in the Final. Grrrr !
Hajrá Ferencváros!!
