- The doyen of Odissi, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra was born on January 8, 1926 in Raghurajpur, Orissa. Kelucharan was a precocious child, he learnt to paint, sculpt and play the Khol drum at a very early age. He joined Gotipua troupes and folk theater groups when he was just nine.
He was totally immersed in Odissi. He resurrected odissi when it was at the verge of extinction. In 1994 he set up an organisation, 'Srjan' to impart training to students in Odissi dance. Many famous classical dancers such as Sanjukta Panigrahi, Kukum Mohanty, Sonal Mansingh, Priyambada Mohanty, Minati Mishra and Bhartanatyam dancer Yamini Krishamurthy are disciples of guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.
For his enormous contribution to Odissi, Kelucharan Mohapatra received many awards including Sangeet Natak Akademi award, 1966; Padma Shri, 1972; Padma Bhushan,1989; Padma Vibhushan, 2000; and Kalidas Samman from Madhya Pradesh government. To honor him the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra award was instituted in 1995. This annual award is given for the contribution in the field of art.
This Odissi exponent passed away on April 7, 2004 in Bhubaneshwar, Orissa, leaving behind a league of Odissi dancers to continue the work started by him.

himachal is not lucky. We not have classical dance in school i wish all Music (vocal instumental dance )be in school curriculum and please make sure this syllabus is not so heavy normal and light syllabus vocal syllabus in CBSE board+ 1 + 2 is so heavy it's like a MA syllabus

I have never experienced such a spiritual guru and his performance in my life. HE was born for Odissi and one can't differentiate the dance from the dancer... Both were one at a single point.

And he is not dancing like a lady but expressing his love towards lord of the universe Jagannath in form of Radha. It’s same lord Jagannath whose devotes are Guru Nanak dev ji and maharaja Ranjit singh

It is a pleasure to watch him. His movements and expressions are so gratceful very few female dancers can match him. No wonder he is considered the greatest Odissi exponent/garu.
Guru ji taught many in his life... Yet I never find anyone being able to depict the emotions as he did. It was total abandonment of self to the Lord.
I agree. Many of the Maestro's disciples are brilliant and extraordinary! 🙏🙏 However, the Maestro was someone else! He belonged to a different world altogether.. and that reflected in His incomparable facial expressions. This is not simply a performance!
