Don’t forget Middlesbrough, it’s one of the great Yorkshire train stations!

  • @markstramtrainbuscapades1729

Whitby would be railwayless if Doctor Beeching had his way!
Before he infamously arrived at BR in 1962, the direct, coastal line from Middlesborough-Whitby had closed in 1958. Beecing's axe would see the lines to Scarborough and the main line out of Whitby to York via Grosmont Junction & Pickering, (the latter becoming the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) would both close by the Doctor's axe in 1965.
Which left the line from Whitby-Grosmont Junction and it's branch to Battersby, where it met another branch from Middlesborough, all due for the axe but the quality of the roads in the area meant that buses would be unable to bring school kids into Whitby! And that's why the trains reverse at Battersby, they were originally two separate lines!
Great track that you've used for incidental music on this vlog!

I live in southern Co Durham and that line is just down the road from me.Trains are often 4 car on the Whitby line I think because of the school as kids use it to go to school in Whitby.Kildale and Commondale don't have mobile phone reception but if you walk up the hill behind Commondale station it works.I use to go stargazing at Commondale but there's a terrible light pollution problem now with floodlights on a house west of the station. That other platform at Battersby is occasionally used by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to run locomotives around which specials go up there.

Great vid. I was on holiday in Whitby and ticked off all the stations between there and Nunthorpe. Did some walks between stations to fill the long waits. Loved Battersby and Commondale. Battersby because it felt like it used to be much more important, and Commondale because of the entrance through a field!

Great video G nice to see you travelling the Esk valley line don't forget to go on the North Yorkshire moors rly while your there when you get to whitby don't forget the 199 steps up to the Abbey its a great view from there ❤

    • @littlemissie7978
      @littlemissie7978 Před rokem +1

I used to go to Whitby there when I was a lot younger with my family. It's a rather pretty part of the uk. I remember climbing all those 199 steps too but took a short break a few times half way up/down when I wanted to sit down on a bench a few mins with my family. We stayed in a big c.h.a house right next to the abbey there, but I think the house has since been demolished. I really enjoyed it back then though.
With G doing the esk valley on the trains in this video, this comment has left me wondering…. is there a train link that goes directly to whitby at all? If so.. where from and where to please? If it was possible for me, I wouldn't mind taking in the beautiful views of Whitby again some day, but going by train would feel quite special, unlike how I used to travel there by car with my family years ago.

On the Esk Valley, trains are more often than not doubled up to 4-cars during the summer, but generally only run as single 2-car units during the winter.

Before I moved south, I planned to do this line for 2 years, and never managed it. I haven't done between Middlesborough and South Bank or Middlesborough and James Cook because I drove to Saltburn to do all stops back to South Bank, and then to Nunthorpe to go down to James Cook and back. But the fact this line gets (or at least got, the timetable may have changed since then) 4 trains a day, in peak times only except on sundays, I was always put off.
I have done Grosmont and Whitby, but on the NYMR. But as it's a section that's the mainline that the heritage trains run on, it counts for me ticking them off. Still, I want to do them on mainline trains too.

I have seen trains do a reverse move in Orange, New South Wales, Australia too. Orange is on a railway junction and the station was built on the northern track. So when the weekly Outback Xplorer from Sydney to Broken Hill runs there it has to go down the northern track to the platform, then reverse out back onto the eastern line so it can head to Broken Hill on the western line. By the way Orange is named after Prince William of Orange not because they grow a lot of oranges there.

I really like the railway the video of the esk valley. Looks like there's some very pretty countryside views around there which is something I'd love to see for myself in some way one day.
It seems like you're not very far from a lovely place called Whitby there either. I used to travel there with my family (by car) when I was a lot younger. I'm in my 30s now.
I wouldn't mind a trip back there by train one day if I knew where the trains went from. But the bbc news on our tv is constantly filling my head with train strikes, I feel very confused whether or not there are still any trains running at all. :-/
Yet here you are, still making these brilliant and fascinating videos, and I'm just sat here watching, wondering (and wishing to myself) if I'll ever get to do a train journey despite these bothersome news programmes on the train strikes. *Sigh. *
You're making lots of lovely videos, I've been sat watching most of them but not really commenting for most of them. You do a brilliant job though, so long may it continue.☺️
