    Your composure when telling us your lost phone tale was brilliant: no panic; just pure calm and 'in control'. Your maturity came across most impressively. And as for where you took us in that enchanting Esk Vale neck o' the woods (and your chosen soundtrack to accompany us on that vlog was among the best you've given us so far too) - was, errr, SHIMPLY SCHTUNNING MY DEAR! - ALSO:
    I hope you didn't leave the North Yorkshire Moors without taking a trip on the NYM Railway to Pickering(?)

    I read in one of the railway mags that the early train on the Whitby line has been withdrawn. It's only been around since about 2019, having been introduced yo provide an earlier service from Whitby, something that was cut when train stabling facilities at Whitby were closed around 1991.

    Great video, G! Nice to see a line where the stations are close to public toilets - especially with the longer waits between trains. I don't think I've seen a 156 connected to a 158 before either - up here you're more likely to see a 158 coupled up to a 170 instead (which always looks a bit odd)!

    As far as I am aware the early 5am service only worked Monday-Friday but this changed in May 2023. It did only stop at some stations though on the Esk Valley Line and operated more as a positioning route for the early Whitby-Middlesbrough routeing. On a Sunday the 3 North east routes (Newcastle-Carlisle / Hexham-Nunthorpe / Middlesbrough-Whitby) become connected also so services run Carlisle to Middlesbrough, Nunthorpe, Battersby and Whitby! The Whitby route being 6 hours long

I understand the anxiety of losing your phone, its more the anxiety of being out of touch and causing potential worry for others I think. I see from your comment later that you got it back. I can remember the days when we didn't all have them to a man or woman. I don't know how we managed! Thought I heard at Grosmont the characteristic snort of a Class 37 on the NYMR. Could be wrong though. Lealholm was gorgeous but then so were the other places. Thanks for a really super film.

We stopped in Egton last year, and got the train from Egton to Whitby, and it is indeed a childrens playgroup in the building next to the station.

    Check out Bargoed train station in the South Wales , 17 miles from Cardiff, 8 miles north of Caerphilly. You can get a train from Cardiff straight through to Bargoed, the journey takes 45 minutes. It used to be Bargoed junction but the third train that went from Newport to Brecon is gone, with a cycle track in its place. I much prefer trains.

    Castleton is great - that bench you were on is in front of the public loo's and its the only one's I have seen that has sheep wandering around - I once drove past saw a guy open the door to the Gents and a sheep just walked out like it was perfectly normal ha ha ha

    • @Thornaby37
      @Thornaby37 Před rokem

      Northern ticket machines are card payment only.
      The purpose of the "promise to pay" is that anyone who has only got cash with them obtains a "promise to pay" ticket from the ticket machine, which states the origin station and the destination. The promise to pay must be exchanged for a ticket at the first available opportunity, at which point the relevant fare for that journey must be paid (usually either a ticket check on the train or at the ticket barrier at the destination). Failure to obtain a promise to pay before boarding the train is classed as attempted fare evasion, which could result in a hefty fine or criminal record for anybody who is caught
