Outside Playing is used in Jazz and Fusion and can be established even with the simple blue note in the Pentatonic scale. In this e-book we going to look at a wide variety of scales and arpeggios like the Dorian mode, the hybrid fusion sale, the half diminished arpeggio or m7b5 arpeggio over minor and major chords. After this we look at chaining arpeggios and sidestepping, also known as side-stepping and sideslipping. Als the Dorian #4 is a good scale to use in this perspective, just like the altered scale, whole tone scale, melodic minor scale and diminished scale and diminished arpeggio.

Just FYI: Fusion doesn't mean to "play outside", playing "outside" does. Fusion is where two or more disparate styles (whether related or not) of music are joined together into a new "fused' sound, style, or even genre. In the case of DiMeola and that ilk, they just kept the name "fusion" which was short for Jazz-Rock fusion. Whereas Ingwe and that ilk took on the name "neoclassical".
Man, your phrasing is awesome. Your channel is excellent. No dumb intros, no gimmicks, no forced attempts at humor, no crazy jump cuts. Solid theory presented with integrity. You are the man.
Rob is a treasure to the guitar student world. His material is consistently fantastic.
This is currently the best guitar theory video on CZcams.
Thank you!
Just wooow best awesome lesson
Agreed!
Yes. And that ain’t Fox News reporting- I just found this and am gonna hurt some fingers today!
Really really NO REALLY GREAT LESSON! Thank you.🎉🎉🎉😊
Holy cow... I've been playing for 45 years with pro experience - this is elegant. So concisely presented without missing any information and it simplifies and enlightens. These are patterns and concepts even advanced players spend months learning. I sent this to one of my buddies who has a degree in classical music and it even taught him a few things.
Simply excellent. Thank you.
Thanks!
10/10 a wealth of fusion knowledge and a comprehensive “cookbook” for any advancing guitarist to get that outside sound. It should be illegal to give this stuff away for free 😂 Thank you!
Thanks! I like the name 'Cook book' :)
One of the best videos on CZcams about fusion guitar.
Please never delete this one! This helps so many people for sure.
Thanks!
Fusion achievement unlocked. Thank you.
I ‘m not a fusion player, but this is really great. I’m trying to get better at playing out, and this is by far the most concise and well presented video I’ve found. I feel like Neo after a download. “Whoa… I know how to play outside“
This isn't just for guitar players. I'm a keyboard player and working on outside playing. This tutorial is absolutely fantastic and very helpful! I love these techniques! Thankyou! 🎹
Nothing better than to see a new video on this channel. Thanks, I am spending all my free time with my guitar and improving.
talking with music examples is the key.
The Altered scale examples are some of the best I've heard of this scale.
Trey Anastasio from Phish is the most innovative and overall best outside player Ivve ever heard. He can take minutes to resolve a phrase (largely due to the genius level support of the keyboardist), and when he does, the effect is greatly exxaggerated and causes an extreme catharthist in the listener. Listen to Chaldust Torture solo from New Years 1995 for a great example.
Thanks for this contribution. Interesting!
Absolutely awesome video, thank you so much! 22 minutes in (after several rewinds) and starting to get overloaded, this is definitely getting watched several more times over the coming days/weeks. So generous to share such a wealth of information 🙏
It’s all way over my head, but it’s great to know that there is a method to the madness!
I love your playing, sir.
Rock on 🤘🏻
As a fellow guitar teacher I really appreciate this resource. I'm learning lots here, THANKS!
This lesson is fantastic! It really helped me crack the code to outside playing. Great explanations with demonstrations.
your content is just amazing. Thanks for all the work you put into this
Best Guitar Content I have ever watched. To Really internalise would take years but won't need any other material in context of Note choices and colour tones ❤❤
Huge thank you from NZ. A wonderful tutorial using such a depth of knowledge and clarity. 🙏🏼
Thank you man, this was a great video. Your way of explaining is smooth and doesn't complicate things, definitely gonna be coming back to this 👍
All these techniques of superimposing and playing outside can be placed in one of two categories: (A) _altering_ the existing backing harmony, in effect creating chromatic alterations of perceived scale degrees in the harmonic context, but retaining the prevailing tonal center, or (B) superimposing a completely _different_ separate, competing harmonic context, so that the listener's ear begins to try and re-identify the whole picture, including the tonal center. Alternative A is easier because the soloist just has to add something to the soup and can rely on the unmodified backing harmony (and rhythm) to be there as a structure and safety net to lean on. But in alternative B, the soloist has to be able to play lines that are so strong and clear that the listener is convinced of the new competing harmonic context. It's like a soloist's harmonic takeover of the listener's perception. The lines have to be clear, they have to draw the picture of a different tonal center very strongly, and the notes have to be played with conviction, precisely articulated, in good rhythm. Even if you play all the right notes, if you play them with unclear timing or articulation, it just sounds like a mistake. This is what I've concluded after spending time trying to find out what works and what doesn't work when trying to play outside. I think the same applies to rhythmic superimposition as well. Many tutorials seem to emphasize the "what notes you should play" aspect, and don't emphasize enough the importance of good technique and phrasing. It's easy to go with the flow and agree with a backing track even with bad technique and phrasing... but to _disagree_ requires a clear idea, power and conviction. :) Even a dead fish can swim downstream with the flow. But to swim upstream it has to be a live one. ;)
Thanks for your clear contribution!
Thank you Rob...doing the hard yards back in the day and passing your knowledge to us.
I’m blown away at how excellent this video is. I would have dropped like $30 on this back in the day and it would have been more than worth it
An absolutely fabulous lesson! I'll probably have been dead for 12 years, 3 months

E-book is coming up :)
You changed my life
Your videos are a blessing for the whole human kind, thank you!
Do you consider doing an episode on the harmonic major modes? I recently got into those and they're tasty... :)
Yes, I will do a video about that :)
This has to be one the best comprehensive/succinct fusion outside lesson I've ever seen. Great content and perfect application examples. Bravo.
I just learned more in 30 minutes about playing outside then I did after 20 years in the navy band and 6 years at Berklee..
Awesome! I also use the Locrian mode to get a cool outside sound. So, on a G7 chord you’d play G Locrian, or the G# major scale. Contained within this scale is the minor pentatonic built off of the 4th of the chord. So on a G7 you’d play C minor pentatonic. This gives you the #5 and the #9. Anyway, great video. Thanks.
Good idea!
This is 24k gold
Crystal clear as mud.
Ty!
Thanks!
Thank you kidtask!!
Köszönjük!
Thank you!!
Howsome an crazy how much we can learn from you Rob in only 30 minutes, I think I need a few days ... weeks to digest everything 🙂.
Thank you so much to share all your knowledge with all of us. Learning new things and getting better day by dag is so cool !!!
Am I wrong or there is an small mistake in the figure at 7'55'' ( M9 an 11 are a half step down)
Thank u❤❤❤
Great lesson, but may need a bit of familiarity with scales, the different modes, and the different chords. So this is a bit advance for those wanting to play the outside chord. I do love the rhythm section.
Amazing video! There is so much information in this video that is almost overwhelming. If someone wanted to move past just using the blue note, which strategy would be the best to start with? And is there a backing track to practice over?
Rob offers backing tracks via his Patreon page. The library you’ll get is like the holy grail of guitar theory 😉
Thanks
Thank you!
