I agree with you about the singles aspect of collecting. I think graded cards can be great in their own regard, but as a college student they’re often way too pricey for me to able to consistently afford. This isn’t all a bad thing though, since being able to binder certain cards in unique orders or patterns or pages is a great way for me to relieve anxiety and stress. I personally think singles are the best way to collect if you view the hobby as an outlet for stress/anxiety relief, which I personally do

Didnt know I would sit and listen to all of your rambling, but it was nice doing so while sorting bulk. As a new collector in modern time its really helpful to hear this. The hobby can be really confusing between aspects like grading, gambling, investing, collecting or just having a passion for certain cards.

Love the video and love the content!!
One comment I will say about slabs: People do typical grade to sell but I like to do it just to completely seal the card and have it forever locked in its current condition. For example, I loved the Mewtwo promo from 151 UPC box and I had that graded. Even at a PSA 10 its not worth alot but currently I have that displayed in my office and I love looking it at!

I love your openness and how you talk about how people overly focusing on grading and making money can have bad effect in the hobby. I been in this hobby for a while now I have seen how when people get into those things in a bad way leads them to view the hobby in different ways and not appreciating the cards.

I really resonated with what you said for being a species collector. At the end of 2022/beginning of 2023 I decided to become a Regi collector because they're honestly my favorite group of legendaries and they look really cool together. They're idk like a C or D tier in general popularity which does make more of their modern cards pretty easy to collect. The problem arises when I have to start looking at pre-gen 7 sets because majority of the cards reside in Gen 3 or 4 sets which are pretty hard to come by as singles and tend to be really expensive if they happen to be an EX or something of the like. With the cards I do have in my collection, it is very satisfying to see them together and I probably won't ever complete it unless I'm pretty lucky.

as someone who likes peeking into other tcg's from a mtg player/collector perspective its always interesting to see the differences. I think grading is going to have its growing pains for yall but i think its going to be the way people are going to connect in the long run, its kinda crazy to think its non existent on our side of the tcg.

i really want to get to the point where my pokemon collecting hobby sorta helps fund itself. it seems like so many people are able to do that but i just cant. i barely make enough money to fund my hobby as is so its gotten to the point where the only things i buy are things that i never plan on selling and things that directly contribute to completing a certain part of my collection so i just dont really know what steps to take to get to that point. currently the collections i've been working on which are all purely 100% for my enjoyment and are not inherently investment collections are 1. every single alternate art (tag team-current), 2. every single full art trainer, every rayquaza card (my favorite mon), 3. every mega pokemon card, 4. every hgss era legend card, and 5. every "illustration rare" pokemon card going as far back as like xy era when they had all of those promo cards. and currently as of right now every single card i own is a card that i refuse to sell to contribute to buying other cards i want/"need" and i cant push myself to buy cards as investments because 1. i suck at knowing what to invest in and predicting what will appreciate in the future and 2. i'd much rather just use that money to go towards directly funding my next big purchase for the collections im working on. so i guess the point of this comment (if anyone has even read this far) is to ask what i could/should do to start getting to that point? how do i get to the point where i can comfortably grow my collection without breaking the bank and with being able to just offload stuff to go towards other stuff. its all super frustrating for me because there are so many cards that i want that would massively help fill these gaping holes in my binders but i just cant afford them and cant justify making a new gaping hole in another binder to fill the first hole

Miss quirky, wise, Entei lover in a box. You know, if you do these videos once a week, for 1 year. You will reach 50k-150k subscribers. Your thoughts about species collectors is spot-on. I don't really reveal this often, I am a cover art collector. If a pokemon is on the cover of a game, I collect all versions of them. Yvetal has been tricky as of late. I have a ton of Lugia, Ho-oh, Blastoise, Charizard... Oh and Eeveelutions... When I got an Eevee in pokemon red/blue, then found out at Celedon mall it said ABLE for all Fire, Water and Thunder stones, I was hooked. Really changed my excitement level in the game and replayability. Umbreon I loved for ages.. There, a rambling comment. Watched this with a friend and she also liked your style... Can you discuss some of the topics in detail you mentioned in this video? Now make that ad revenue ;) Subscribed.

I've still not made up my mind on collecting and I've been collecting for five years, but I think that is okay. I have a melt down every month or so, cause I feel like I don't have it narrowed down enough, but I do love collecting and I'm selling stuff too, so it's all good.

Fun ramble. :) I LOVE collecting cards in PSA slabs and often grade them myself. Something about a minty card protected in a nice little display case just makes me happy. But the downside of it is I do get obsessive about condition. I often pull cards and lose the joy because it's not gradable. I think you make a good point on valuing a card regardless of its grading potential just because its an awesome card or you have the memory of pulling it yourself. :) I just sent in Paldean Fates Gardevoir SIR. I fully expect a PSA 9. But I was pretty stoked to pull that card and decided I just want to protect it in a slab for my personal collection because there is a nice memory attached to that card. :)
I will say on the subject of grading though. Part of what I like about grading is it adds a new rarity tier. For instance, modern cards have high pops but sometimes due to poor quality, getting a PSA 10 is hard. So it still provides a chase and effectively makes a card rare that really isn't. Take Paldean Fates Magikarp IR. There are probably a ton of copies of that out there and yet the PSA 10 pop is low because its so hard to grade that card. Gives the card an extra chase and makes it more rare than its pull rate.

I 100000% agree with all of your points, and I have literally stopped grading for PC, I've started almost exclusively buying raw for my PC or buying 6-9 grades and cracking them out of plastic....I think the plastic revolution ( slabs ) is so out of hand and people are starting to feel that annoyance for sure.

I am a bit of a freak in that I have this compulsion to demand that my collectibles serve a secondary purpose; that purpose usually being as a game piece. I go out of my way to not buy slabs. :^( I often fantasize about putting cubes together out of my cute lil collection, or making a series of vintage decks etc etc...
To someone like myself, slabbing and grading is just a mechanism to inflate the value of the cards I want that I could get cheaper elsewhere.

I'm a species collector of the entire Sneasel family. I just bought the shiny ones from Shiny Treasure ex, probably going to grade those, I guess that would fall into that "not really warranting a grade" but to me it's just a nice collector piece. Probably not much of a competitive market for Sneasel, Weavile and Sneasler, but they're my favourite pokemon.
Also regarding what you said about people buying to grade and resell, I pulled the alt art Umbreon V and after I sold it, the guy sent it back because it wasn't going to be a 10 grade. This "10 or worthless" mentality is not healthy
