My mother was very much part of the goth culture in the 90’s (in Salem, MA) and still is to this day! Though, she was more on the metal side of the spectrum, befriending many of the bands that would come around (Danzig, type o negative, Sepultura, gg allin and even a lot of black metal bands). She was only 18 when she had me but definitely raised me right and exposed me to the music, people and style from a very young age. I have some amazing memories growing up in the 90’s with her and many of her friends that would always entertain me and listen to some “dark, scary and heavy” music with me...even though it wasn’t the most conventional childhood, I loved it and wouldn’t trade those memories for anything.

I grew up an hour and a half outside of Salem.
Started off goth in middle school but then became way more influenced by Black Metal and have been in the black metal scene for the last 12 years.
Grew up in a pretty religious household too. I'm Muslim by the way. One of the rare Italian-French ones.
My best friend growing up and to this day is a pastor's kid. We progressed with our taste of music, style, and unbeffiting behavior together.

Your mother has very good taste. "Goth" girls these days don't even listen to what she listened to, they mosty listen to core bands (like Bring me the Horizon, Black Veil Brides, Blood on the Dance Floor, etc) and are really just normies who think they're goths. Goths who are actually part of the subculture are a rare breed these days, it's real unfortunate.

Also, my mother would never, ever listen to the bands yours listens to. She mainly listens to 1950s/60s oldies. She's a conservative Christian boomer.

We had mix-tapes like crazy. Also, being Goth back then wasn't all that great. It was difficult to get a job (outside of a record or second-hand clothing store). Cops harassed us. We didn't have the internet to buy clothing from. And finding other Goths, if you didn't live in a city, was almost impossible.

I grew up in NY so I was fortunate in that dept. I remember always wondering what it was like for people in smaller towns. How they'd find each other, music, did they have places to hang out etc? When I was young my grandparents had a vacation house in the Pocono's in PA and people would stare and point like I was a sideshow freak when I'd visit-- Not a Goth to be seen. We weren't that far from Philly either!

Interesting. You know what, we probably ran into each other in one of the clubs at some point. I used to hit the Batcave on occasion and there was another in NYC that I cannot remember the name of to save my soul. Then we went around NY and NJ finding little bars and crap having goth nights. Those were always fun. The best was the one where me and my two friends were the only ones who showed up. We got to hear anything we wanted to and went nuts on the dance floor. I miss those days. I'm still kind of a closet 90s goth. LOL!

Aye, I hear ye. Try getting a job as a (fully qualified) Early Years Practitioner In rural Scotland. Teaching nursery class (3-5 year olds) in a Primary School. It was at this point the piercings had to go. Shame really. The kids didn't care about my blue hair and piercings...they probably thought I was some kind of majestic fairy or something. Kids are far more accepting than adults.
20 years later, things have relaxed a wee bit. A few piercings have sneaked in over the years. :D

I was 23 when The Crow came out in the theatres. I started listening to Siouxsie in '86 while in high school. The rest of the 90's was a blur of darkness, intrigue, and beautiful music in goth. It really was an amazing decade. I feel because people took it to heart. I don't wish to put down those younger people now but it has changed with the expansion of the internet. Goth has become less of a mystery and more of a cosplay.

I listened to Siouxsie in the 80s too, the cure, depeche mode, Bauhaus, the church and joy division, among others. But I loved shoe gaze too. There was a late night British radio show I recorded on a cassette every Friday to find new music. Lol. I am an old goth at heart. I just did what felt right and i loved wearing black, I didn't really label myself. It took my daughter who follows in my footsteps musically to tell me I was goth in the 80s. :) siouxsie still rocks my socks; they were playing Happy House at sonic the other day! But it wasn’t called goth yet, it was much later that it got the term goth, yet there were songs which were defined as “gothic” but that was because of its literal sense not its musical symphony but what it made the critics feel at the time. The term goth was actually thrown around as a slur, it was much later that people started embracing it. Check anywhere ...😊

Thanks for what you do not just for nostalgia but as everything you say is right. Thanks for putting yourself on the line by exposing yourself honestly and thank -you that in this cyber world of kids online in make up never being to a club, you are true & flying the bat flag regardless of the flak. Thank you so much, your comment really, REALLY made my night. That's why I started vlogging my experiences. I know that people like us we're quite nostalgic and look back on the Goth scene with mixed emotions-- sadness for the loss and happiness for what we experienced mixed with a longing for it's return. As for the newer Goths that have no freakin idea about what the scene really was and are stuck with this mess-- give them a taste of what it was and what it could be. The future of that is in their hands.

Being a Goth guy in the 1990's was basically in a nutshell : Listening to : The 3 Glenn Danzig bands : The Misfits , Sam Hain , Danzig , and then later on his solo stuff , Type O Negative , Cradle of Filth , Dimmu Borgir / Old Man's Child , Moon Spell , reading Edgar Allen Poe poetry , tarot cards, Wicca & Witch Craft , watching horror movies that revolve around ghosts and haunted houses , and loving the movies The Sixth Sense & The Frighteners. Goth's were mainly in the 14-24 age range back then.
The Goth sub-culture was a sub-culture , just like there were punk rock sub-cultures , skater - roller bladder sub-culture , whigger - wangsta - gangsta sub-culture , grunge & alternative rock sub-culture , and then circa 1997-2003 the Korn fan club and sub-culture was even more bizarre then any sub-culture , I do not know what they were ??? Whiggers who moshed, drove low-riders, and had dread-locks ? LOL !
I was born the same year as Angela Benedict 1979. So that was my honest opinion of my : 14-24 age range experiences with intermingling and hanging out a few times with different sub-cultures in the Seattle Metro Area.

You are right though. Most"normal" people we mean to goths, but as a female there was the semi-frequent non-goth who would try and hit on your by telling you how they also "like the scene" and how they "also listen to Marilyn Manson" MM being the only band they ever mentioned because it was the only bad normal people thought was goth...
      Which wasn't goth.
I liked MM but I was picky about what MM songs I liked. I think the major confusion about MM was because he covered some songs that some people considered goth and he had an extreme look that some goths mostly guys worked into their look.

What about me? Because of the fact I was born in 2003 and the fact that I was just the usual random sheep in the herd of pop music until just that time of the last year, I even missed the more recent years lead by the metal version of gothic in 1990-2015 with Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation's earlt stuff, Type O Negative, Cradle of Filth, Theatre of Tragedy, HIM, UnSun, Cemetary, Paradise Lost, TIamat, Moonspell, etc. As the half of them have already split up! :( At least I can listen to them whenever I want to (and I have a lot to catch up... and that's the reason I'll be listening to a big part of the mentioned after Type O Negative in the whole 2019...)

if you’re getting a lot of likes from me im sorry LOL, i’ve just been binging your videos.
this is all really nice information to learn; i don’t consider myself goth or anything really. i listen to pretty much everything except country (lol) but lean more towards rock/more recently metal. but im slowly becoming interested in the goth subculture, not because of aesthetics but more like a genuine interest to learn. the first band i officially listened to was london after midnight after i found them in the r/goth subreddit and i LOVEE them. im obsessed with selected scenes from the end of the world, i listen to the black cat and sacrifice almost everyday. then i found out about she wants revenge, and obviously bauhaus, etc etc etc.
guess im commenting this because you’re so passionate about teaching and showing what it was like when you were younger-the scene, the music, the memories, and that even though it may not seem like it, you’re a big influence to a lot of people/the younger generation (im 19 lol) so thank you so much

Personally, I don't associate myself with any contemporary subculture, to me it all seems fruitless to be forever locked into what I find to be essentially high school-ish pecking order. Pardon if that remark offends anyone.
However, much of the music that's often been associated with a Goth aficionado, I've always enjoyed. While I don't label these groups as goth (prefer terms like Post-Punk, Death Rock, Darkwave), I will say that Fields of the Nephilim are my most favorite band in the world. Their music touches me in a way that far transcends the limitations of identity politics. they are Ritual Music, A conscious meditation into the arcane. My interest into Occult Philosophy is greatly in debt to their inspiration. Music has a tremendous role in my life as entertainment and a form of cognitive enrichment.
Much like you I was exposed to this stuff when there was basically no internet, or commonly available resources we have today. Never cared much for the social aspects, like how to dress or act, but the music will always captivate me.
Sadly I missed Peter Murphy doing his acoustic tour last month ;((

I about fell when I saw the magazines and saw Propaganda...OMG...I haven't seen one in years and yes Cleopatra was one of the main labels. I remember having to special order imports from our record store and usually the way I learned music was from asking the DJ at the club who it was. Then a store opened up about 1hr away that catered to the goth and punk crowd so used to travel an hour just to get music. Those were the days and the memories I have I wouldn't trade for anything. Of course all I have are the memories and those were some of the greatest times of my life. The goth culture was completely different then than what they consider "goth" today. Its funny because I am always listening to my 90's goth music instead of modern day music. I have a book of cd's just like you and get made fun of that I am way behind the times. So much Nostalgia watching your videos. Thank you so much!!!

Very nicely done. This makes me terribly nostalgic for the Boston scene back then. Things sometimes really did feel like magic. Even though there are still goth nights to attend, they just don't have that anymore.
Toward the end of the 90s there were some wonderful digital avenues for finding new music, but early on it was all about the compilations, word of mouth, and asking the DJs what they were playing.

Manray and this other night that was held upstairs in some building by a train station. Can't remember the name. I remember having to get a fake ID despite being 18 because in Boston your legal age was 19.
I totally agree about the compilations. In Part 2 I'm going to explore Hex Files: The Goth Bible and the compilations like The Goth Box, Zoth Ommog, Gothic Rock etc. There was so much more I wanted to do but I was defeated when my printer ran out of black ink lol.

90s kids in general already get mad nostalgia for the 90s. Just imagine how hard it hits for 90s goths

I had to watch this one again. This was one of the first videos I saw here and it is still the best to capture what it was like... the absence of speaking makes this perhaps the strongest emotional connection to the best days of the scene. I wish there were more shows like this but the format has evolved. You're doing a great job capturing yesteryear.

Thanks for all the work that went into putting these playlists together, Angela. I'm a "darkly leaning" musician who wanted to dig into the underground of gothic music, and this was totally helpful. I was familiar with the big names in the gothic and industrial scenes, but now my eyes are opened up to a lot of different things. Just wanted to say thanks because I have really been digging into these playlists. Cheers!

Oh my god this takes me back, and your look in this video was my every day look back then. This is legit getting me emotional haha. Being goth in the 90s- despite the stigma, stares, and other crap that came along with standing out in a society that wasn't quite ready for that yet- was honestly the best part of my life. I discovered goth at 14(through the old Jenny Jones makeover shows, of all things) and just fell in love. I was the only goth girl in my school for a couple years. There was one other goth kid, a guy, and of course we got together. It was just such a fun time, full of the wonder and the excitement of taking part in this style and culture that I absolutely *loved*, that made me feel so much more beautiful and interesting than the standard looks that were popular at the time. That was one of the biggest draws for me- it was something INTERESTING in a sea of boring same-ness. I remember trying to find makeup and clothes before Hot Topic was a thing and it wasn't easy, especially since I lived in the bible belt. I had to buy normal black clothes and alter them, and I could only ever find black lipstick around Halloween so I'd stock up and hope I didn't run out. In '96 I stumbled onto this tiny shop in the city that sold high-end goth clothes and Manic Panic makeup. 15 year old me nearly cried from joy, and thankfully my parents were decently well off and my dad would always buy me stuff cause he enjoyed seeing me happy even if he didn't quite get my style. And the club, oh man. Every Thursday the gay club in the city hosted goth night and even though I was underage I would go and have a blast dancing and checking people out till 1 or 2 in the morning. Falling asleep in school the next day was completely worth it. I have a son now and I'll be so happy if he follows in mommy's footsteps, so I can take him shopping and show him how to do his makeup and take him and his friends to goth night(if the club still does it of course). I know I'm rambling but this brought back so many amazing memories

Nice video, very nostalgic for me and as a 90s goth I related a lot to much of what you wrote here. It's weird how now you can just listen to whatever music you want and see all kinds of extremely interesting and unusual people online but in those days goth music and goth clubs held such an air of mystery and exoticism which was not easily obtained other places. . It's an interesting change. kind of sad in a way.

Aahhhhh my favorite song!!! I remember so much of the bands and stuff you talk about in the 90's. I'm an 80's, late 70's goth. There was only several of us then. At least in California in my area anyway. My mother hated it and put me in a catholic school during my high school days. Lol...I was always in trouble wearing my uniform shorter and gothed up.

Lots of "fondly remembering" videos out there but a) I like this feels honest and uniquely presented and b) including playlists is a wonderful idea to perpetuate the style, rather than just sigh "ho-hum well that's the past, not for you"
    Good job

+Matthew Stogdon I wanted it to feel authentic and really put out that sense of reminiscing with a sense of mourning because I genuinely do miss those days. There's no reason they shouldn't come back. I suppose this also double's as a recruitment video :X I'm really happy you like it. Coming from you that means a lot. Next time I'm in Norwich. VIDEO!

So well presented and well written! I can relate to everything you said. I did the whole 90s mailorder/magazine thing too, but in my case I grew up in a very small isolated northern town so there were no goth clubs and no other goths to play with. In most cases I had to "hide" my gothness growing up because it was way too weird to be the only one all decked out. I wasn't able to fully immerse myself in that culture because, well, there was no culture for me. It was only after traveling to bigger cities and to Europe where I got to see the full-on goth/industrial live and club experience. It was quite an experience hearing Ministry, Skinny Puppy and Nine Inch Nails in a club for the first time and eventually seeing those bands live. It was really cool seeing all of these awesome people dressed up and not afraid to be free. I experience that whenever I'm in a big city. People can just be totally nuts and free and no one bats an eye. In a small town anything different is frowned upon.
Not having a "scene" to call my own allowed me to explore other genres such as heavy metal, rap, punk, pop, alt, and later on EDM. Without a specific subculture to develop into made me dwell in many of them and my music tastes are extremely varied. I'm now a strange hybrid who travels far and wide attending concerts and festivals of all genres and for me there are no boundaries when it comes to music. I would've loved to grow up in a large city like New York. I would be a totally different person, but I have no regrets for where I grew up and its made me into quite a different beast altogether.
