PPG Wave 2.2 Wavetable Synthesizer from the year 1982.
The PPG Wave 2.2 is the direct successor of the Wave 2 but with 2 oscillators. He is one of the greatest synths ever. A real classic! Only 500 Wave 2.2 were manufactured.
The sound character is different to the later Waldorf Microwave synths and a little bit different to the Wave 2.3. The nice SSM 2044 filter make the sounds so warm and incredible.
- 8 Voices
- 2 to 16 Oscillators per voice
- 30 Wavetables with 64 waves per table
- analog 24 dB/oct lowpass SSM 2044 VCF
- Curtis CEM 3360 VCAs
- micro processor (6809)
- 8Bit DACs
Used by: Trevor Horn (Propaganda, Art Of Noise, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones), Ultravox, Depeche Mode, Robert Palmer, Talk Talk, Tears For Fears, Thomas Dolby, The Fixx, Thompson Twins, Tangerine Dream, Gary Numan and much more

The PPG wave 2.2 Synthesizer from the year 1982 is one of most fascinating synthesizers ever. You can find a lot demo videos, sound tutorials about the Wave and the Waveterm in the PPG wave playlist.
The PPG playlist: czcams.com/play/PLe08Lbpy8pPYKXe4iF4ANVVO6C6qz53WZ.html
Stuart Neale's work on Kajagoogoo's first album has the Wave 2.2 all over it. Love this synth. Ooh. to. be. ah.
Agree with you
Geddy Lee from Rush used the PPG quite a bit in the 80's. You can hear it all over their 1984 album Grace Under Pressure and his PPG was out on stage with him in that time period.
The waves (pads) are quite pristine and lovely to listen to. Thanks for the well constructed video. Looking forward to part two.
Ich könnte diese Machine den ganzen Tag lang hören und es wäre mir niemals langweilig.
Danke fürs Hochladen!
This was used on one of my favorite albums, Dan Siegel's "Another Time, Another Place." Great sounds and demo!
this is too much. holy fuck the warmth man!
;)
Nice! Finally a good demo of the PPG wave on CZcams! It seems a lot of people have forgotten about this synth, because it's almost none existing on CZcams.
I got the chills... beautiful and spacey sounds.
Amazing harmonics, thanks for the demo
forever young
Gorgeous sounding instrument!
Ohh!
Thanks for the upload man!
Depeche Mode used the PPG Wave 2.2 on the A Broken Frame album. The Song See You has the choir sound at the beginning.
so warmmmmm... beautiful sound! thanks!
It is simply amazing! My favorite synthesizer of all time!
Agree with you
I'd have a BALL with this synth!
Brilliant example & audio. Thanks
great demo of a rare synth
Fabulous lush sounds... WOW... Worth every penny!
Lovely arp too. Beautiful sound.
One of my all time favs on my wish list
Awesome sounds!
wow marko the sounds sent goose bumps up me so sweet :)
Der PPG - ein Synth, der mir nahezu unbekannt ist. Danke für das Video!
Geddy Lee loved this thing in the 80's.
Love this synth its a beast!
Where in the world did you come across this beauty ???? And in such pristine condition !!!!!!! With only 500 produced, this was a real find !!!! (and a bit expensive, I imagine !!!) Worth every penny !!! Thanks for the upload :-) Peace
Quite a beast indeed - reminded me some Tangerine Dream tunes from the early-80's.
Now this is a real synth.
Amazing 🤩
Thank you! Cheers!
Holy bells! At 4:09 ... My god... So beautiful!
ive listened to this demo several times because this synth sounds so great i just want to hear it all the time and I wish i had $4000
bad news. now its going for over 12K lol
Thanks!
I could listen to these PPGs all day long :) I hope to get close to some of those lush sounds on the Blofeld. I know one can get close!
Looks like it's fresh out of the box! MINT! No damage that I can see via CZcams or from your camera.
After the Yamaha CS80, this was my most lusted after synth ... well may be apart from a huge Modular Moog ... LOL
i really like the sound of the ppg.. particularly the voice-like sounds.. I don't think I've heard such a sound on any other synth.
Waldorf wavetable synths (like the Microwave/others) will be your next best bet,
as most if not all of them include a number of the PPG wavetable banks.
There's PPG all over the Rush albums GRACE UNDER PRESSURE and POWER WINDOWS. Great video!
R. U. S. H
PPG was way ahead of its time and has no equal in the digital realm. The 2.2 ad 2.3 hooked up to the Waveterm allows endless possibilities of mangling the sounds. Not the easiest synthesizer to program, but by far one of the most unique and organic sounding instruments.
The PPG is a fantastic synth.
Very cool synthesizer. If I'm not mistaken this beauty was used heavily by Gary Numan, particularly on his album "The Fury". Great video and thank you for posting.
Berserker too, he even painted himself PPG Blue on that one.
good, very good sound,bravo!!!
number 4 on my wish list;) thanks again Marko. For anyone interested my top 5
5-Prophet 5
4-PPG wave (this one!)
3-VP330 vocoder plus
2-Jupiter 80
1-Yamaha CS80
great sounds favorited
The Fixx, with their 80's lineup intact, released their new CD "Beautiful Friction" on July 17, 2012 and it's getting fantastic reviews. They still sound great.
38 year old synth sounds amazing. God synths was so great back then. Love it.
Yes indeed!
1:24 is sooooo good! Keep it up! :-)
@MacXpert74 Not many waves were built due to internal company issues. The designer is still working and thats awesome. Mass produced commercial synths are common but wave is rare beast! Use what you have though, many people love all kinds of electronic sound.
Awesome work !! Can I get some info about that choir Patch on 0:40?? Sounds really like the forever young one ! im actually trying to emulate it with the PPG 3 Plugin but couldn't find any suitable preset or wavetable ...
magnifico......
un misto tra suono analogico e digitale
4:05 if possible could you please tell me the wavetable used, and the start wave number for the main OSC and Sub OSC please? (if direct or offset for the sub?)
I'm going to try and make this sound on my Microwave Rev A.
@retrosound72
Yeah, thank you for reminding me of that. The Waldorf synths are going to be cleaner sounding by virtue of being 16-bit.
was sagt man dazu?
Jens
Great channel you have, I've seen you on the vintagesynth forum some time ago :)
Do you own all the vintage synths you test? If so, you must have a big warehouse by now to store them all in? I saw a PPG wave 2.3 for 4000 EUR on ebay, can you really afford to buy it?
Fabolous device and demo. Thanks a lot. Are that all factory patches or custom made?
some from the factory library and some custom made. thank you.:)
@VectronMusic Yes i am sitting with a Wave 2.2 Simulation. Seems all 0k, allthough it doesnt feel stable (of course as its emulated). But i am trying to learn :)
at round 2:40 what is the arpeggiatted patch consist of ?
I might add that the limited # of controls and mod parameters, peculiarities with the envelope segment behaviors (i.e. ENV 1 & 2 timing curves when modulating wavetables), the quirky LFO and it's jittery timing/quantization at different speeds/mod depth, preset detune levels, upper wavetable and the SSM filter all make the difference too.
A synth which has a sound greater than the sum of it's parts :)
I've had one of these under the bed for about 12 years. I bought it off eBay then did nothing with it because I'm a guitar player really. I think I'll dig it out having heard this.
You need to dig that out immediately and make sure the battery isn't leaking.
+ChorltonM21 you need to contact me !
You still have it?
Marco as usuall great work!! I have a suggestion! Could you make a song themed "Blue Light" the warm light in the night for example...
in part two, can you show a bit of the controls
4:10 great sound!
I think the best I've ever heard of this synth was when Mike Rutherford programmed a custom sound for the intro to "In The Living Years".
Fabulous! I wish there were some way i could get the sound from it without buying this, as it must be very expensive and sure is rare. I am inspired by all synthesizers, and they all have something unique about them, though i cannot buy them all, i just want the sounds.
Wow. That was a true master piece. Not like the plug ins we have today.
:)
@paciok1971 I always characterized Depeche by their use of the Emax which often sampled many , many synths!
1:47 - 3:24 those bells!! (especially 2:18 *the* PPG signature sound)!!
wow.. those bell sounds were fuckin ace!
I search a sound very similar at the one at 40 seconds, can you help me???
eargasmic
Cool...
:)
@HoracePL
There's also some VST emulations out there.
Hi there. Are you using an external reverb, or is that how the PPG sounds straight from the output?
IMHO I'm going to say it's completely "Dry".
With a decent Release on the Envelope -
PPG's can get really wild.
5:06 reall nice
hey congrats! you got one of these. now you just need an arp chroma and a cs-80?
Hi, noticed yours has no worn paint and looks like you've used some kind of clear lacquer to protect the front panel? Am I right?
I really want one... 😣😣😣
nice get
@CypherTheIncredible A lot. They're pretty valuable.
@CypherTheIncredible
You would be very lucky to find one for less than US$2000. You can get the same kind of sound with a Waldorf Microwave XT, but unless you're lucky enough to find an XTk you have to have a keyboard to control it.
Do you own all the keyboards??
Greeting from So Cali...
Also used by "The Twins" (italo disco)
yes
Red skies at night stand or fall....
so I know sample-based synths via a computer-based DAW lack the warmth quality....can u tell the difference aurally ? I think its more of a feeling thing for me....I just feel that is sounds real and the sample based synths i use via Komplete 9....come close but aren't quite the same ....am i crazy ? or do u know what i mean ?
yes I know its like mp3 to vinyl.
How does anyone feel about the classic PPG waveforms used in the Waldorf gear...
Esp the Blofeld?
( no need to debate again about VA's vs. analogue circuits/filters tho...thanks)
sorry for the bad news, by asking such a question you WILL inevitably end up in the debate you are trying to avoid - ( which we all complain about , and still never miss a chance to bring it up lol..:) the blofeld is a good synth not only on features matter , but also on the sound's one imho - yes i do have one - , but no matter how close the wt's themselves can manage to get, the overall sound will never sport a fraction of the guts this has
The XTK is better.
@TheSYNTHOID Yes indeed. I guess it was a bit obvious I had Mini Pops on my mind during this project.
:-)
0:41 Depeche mode lol
Wow, around 4 mins, I think that outdoes the DX synths for a sweet bell like tone.
@HoracePL
Try a Waldorf Microwave/XT/XTk if you want sounds like these. They are based on the PPG machines.
i love this synth , i want get one
it´s a digital fetish
o tecladista do kajagoogoo me trouxe aqui
Tangerine Dream and even Thomas Dolby used these at one time. Dolbys hit album was based on this machine, he dumped it and did Howard the Duck...hmm Tangerine dream still has theirs stashed away, or so I read.
Did you get the Waveterm b unit too?
I love this synth.
How much use to be for sale?
+KurtFuller 4000-5000 Euro
+RetroSound Haha, ok, I´ll keep dreaming then XD
Thanks!
+KurtFuller Well I mean you can get a Waldorf Blofeld which is wavetable but not the really the same sounding.
thinks of Tangerine Dream hearing this....
yes or Thomas Dolby, Saga, Depeche Mode, Art Of Noise...
dam...ur good at this
this synth is so fantastic. digital but so full of live.
Tangerine dream used this quite a lot.
i was thinking the same thing :D
Let’s dance in style let’s dance for a while
;)
The reason these were so expensive back in their day is the sheer amount of ROM space required for all of the waveforms- there are 32 wavetables, and each has 64 waveforms- that's a total of 1,920 waveforms!
Lots of Rom and Ram - the wave 2.2 has 192K of Ram, which was an enormous amount back in 1982!
It's like Tangerine Dream in a box.
:-)
I wish I could afford one of these...I know the Waldorf Microwave XT is very similar, but you have to have a separate controller for it.
My XTK needs no controller.
