When she swings her blade at 2:25 is aura. She also does that in the Black trailer, when she doesn't seem to have dust. The dust is incorporated into her semblance (stone, ice, and fire). It doesn't appear that she's using gravity dust (which generally exerts a pulling force like in the Grim Reaper's fight against Tock), unless dust affects both her semblance and attacks.
I miss when fight scenes looked like this.

Neos reaction to Raven is like my reaction in a video game when I get to a boss fight and find out I’m way under leveled
I mean that's basically the music for Raven's entrance here to a tee. I always think it reminds me of Sephiroth's "One Winged Angel" but it definitely always gives the vibe of "you are so far out of your league you're not even in the same timezone."
Neo is so fluid and fights as though she's one with the wind. It's insane how she throws herself around in mid-air while dodging or throwing attacks.

Ruth Ann Allen Gotta give credit where credit is due. And tbh if Neo did she would’ve saved us from the Yang we have now.

Weiss' fight was like the definition of "winning in the gameplay fight but loosing in the cutscene." also wish we could see more of Blake using dust, that shit was so cool!
Her weapon of choice just doesn't do enough damage. A rapier isn't that impressive compared to shotgun gauntlets or oversized scythe-sniper hybrid. She really needs creative use of her glyphs and summoning to deal serious damage
It's sad when season 1-3 team RWBY would easily beat season 4-8 RWBY. Blake actually being able to fight with 2 swords, use a projectile slash, dust infused sembelence, martial arts. Like, jeez these characters can't fight for shit now.

it took me way too long to realize that all those colors are other blades made of dust so when one breaks, or she needs a different one she can just swap it out.
If only we got a decent fight with Raven without a bunch of magic powers.

Those dust upgrades Blake had made all the difference against Torchwick, he didn't expect them at all, he probably figured it'd be the same as when he fought both Blake and Sun at the same time. Torchwick is a pretty damn competent fighter for a regular dude, but at the end of the day he's just that, a regular dude with no special semblance skullduggery to fall back on. Heck its debatable if he even has aura or not, I think he does given some of the crap he's survived, but we've had no visible evidence of it. I like how he keeps his cool even when his plans are falling apart.
To be fair about the plan; he was expected to fail to set up the next phase
Remember back when he was the villain we were more concerned about and he kept meeting our expectations?
@@vampiricn1ght For me he was just fun to watch, somehow managed to mix a bit of levity into a serious situation despite he himself being stuck playing a role he wanted no part of. Very much a "Well I'm doomed either way, but that don't mean I can't have a laugh or two doing what I gotta do." attitude. He was never really a major threat by himself. Hell he only ever once got deadly serious and lost his humor, and that was when Neo got yeeted off the airship.

My other favorite part about Torchwick is how much of a opposite he’s to ruby, specially on he’s last scene/speech, he hates the idea of heroes and huntsman with he’s nihilistic and selfish point of view over the world
Opposite to Ruby’s positive and innocent point of view about helping others and heroism (heck Roman’s theme, specially in the dock’s fight, sounds a lot like Ruby’s theme twisted into a more sinister and extravagant version)

ik like the final fight in season 1 with roman when she was abusing her semblance (In a good way) like, where did that fighting style go? she could have easily won against Adam in volume 6 if she still was "good"

In the very least, RWBY's post-v4 writing problems seem to have been fixed over time, but nerfing a character when something in the plot needs to happen(partially excluding v6, adam was seeing red at the time and though the whole 'no!' at the sword thing was a little bit off, it made sense that he'd be off his game) still sadly seems to be something that happens a lot. But RWBY's still a pretty good show.
At the end Neo is like, "Shit that's a Huntress! PEACE OUT!"

@@rossspeight-burns7216 i think Neo ran because she knew something that Raven has, the Spring maiden's power. considering the fact that Raven didn't attack her right away and let her run away than simply charge at someone without holding back like what she did against Cinder, this may have been telling us that Neo and Raven is connected since Neo's fighting doesn't fit with her age or she's old- but to me she looks so young, possibly younger than Ruby.

I think in my opinion, they would've won if Weiss fought Neo and Yang fought the guy with the chainsaw.
I was thinking that Blake fight Neo since Neo uses her agility to dodge strong attacks, meanwhile, Blake is as agile as Neo, if not more. And yes, you're right about Yang and the chainsaw White Fang member, Yang could have most likely beaten him... as for Torchwick, well, it doesn't really matter who fights him, he's that strong in a fight.
I always thought about this and then i came to the conclusion that yang may have had a better chance against the guy with the chainsaw, but I don't think weiss would've beat Neo, in fact since she wouldn't have Raven to come and save her she might have died.

I got Neo's semblance, you can tell its activated by her irises being different, which signifies that she is manipulating the image the world sees or maybe the people she is fighting sees which is why she doesn't speak because it would give away the effect she has on the perceived image, the eyes show the image manipulation is being used, first as a weakness so it's not overpowered, but also because she wouldn't be able to make the image perfect with how the world is constantly changing around them

Actually Neo’s eyes depend on whether she’s attacking or defending, and her eyes turn white when she was attacked.
I think I finally figured out why weiss loses every fight. It's because she's not prepared for underhanded tactics look at when the white Fang member grabs her, her eyes are pretty firmly focused on the chainsaw to make sure she doesn't have to defend so she's entirely unprepared for his sudden change in tactics. if you look at the parts of the fight before she gets grabbed she's actually doing pretty well he only wins because he starts fighting dirty. like seriously think about it, every time weiss loses a fight it's always too underhanded tactics (I mean feel free to correct me on that but still you can't deny that's why she loses most of the time)
When she used her time glyph though it backfired shortly after since she was inexperienced with it. As a result, she slowed down to a crawl allowing Bonesaw to grab her and slam her into the ground.

I love the fact that no one is talking about how Roman literally just disappears at 2:15 and then reappears. I know it's an old season, but it still makes me laugh to this day.

Very interesting to see Yang wasn't able to use her semblance against Neo. Yang semblance is based on storing energy from opponent's attack and blasting it back, but Neo didn't use her energy to attack her. Instead, she was using Yang's momentum to drive her back. Therefore Yang has no energy to store because it's basically her own energy.
Besides, Yang's gauntlet attacks were meant to kill Grimm, hand to hand combat is very hard to kill another human being. Yang had no intend of killing Neo, only defeating her. But all that changes when Raven appeared, she meant business. Of all the dust blades, ice to immobilize, lightning to stun, wind to dodge/elevate, stone to block/defend, she chose fire to burn & kill. Raven wasn't there to defeat, she was there to kill, and she chose a fresh blade for Neo. That's a fucking warning.

As I said, id rather have more fluid and better choregraphed fights, then have just better graphics and better desgined models. I've seen stick man fights better then the more recent rwby volumes.

early RWBY is the best RWBY.
The later volumes are just puff and smoke, Monty was a real genius! look at the fluidity, choreography, look at all the variables included in the fights. I'm not sold on the new volumes of rwby they are killing off original and great characters and having more fun making new ones with zero backstory...
HeadFull OfCloudz we've only seen the first two episodes of Vol 4, and in vol 3 the only characters introduced were really just winter, Qrow and salem - with exception of the latter they have good backstories considering they appeared so long after the series began
Monty's widow confirmed Pyrrha's death had been planned from the beginning, and I wouldn't be surprised if Penny and Roman's were too.
The fact they used up so many hair colours, styles, weapon designs and themes for the tournament alone makes me wonder how many more characters they still have in store for later...

Interesting how Neo shows fear upon Raven's appearance. I never knew why this was until Volume 5, but now it makes sense. Raven quit working for Salem and Cinder must have seen her as a viable threat around this time. Neo, being part of Cinder's posse, recognized said threat and booked it outta there before she got hurt.

Without Monty's fights, RWBY doesn't have much of a leg to stand on. They tried replicating his fights the best they could, however, they still manage to be beyond lackluster.
It's not like the animators CAN'T animate good fights. In fact, when they're allowed to show off their skills, the scenes they make are really great, almost on par with Monty. Just look at all the cool fights we had in V6-7:
- Cinder vs Neo
- Yang & Blake vs Adam
- RWBY vs Ace Ops
- Ironwood vs Watts
The real issue is the writers that, for some reason, focus too much on dialog and insist on making characters comically incompetent because it creates more "drama" and "tension".

@@nickkingston6684 the fights are literally just objectively better like there are certain methods that go into making a fight scene specifically camera work taking a character's abilities into account and making sure the viewers can follow everything the animation error is that a pop up and fight scenes nowadays is just stupid looking and lacks a lot of thought and purpose and care
Also, I don't think that Neo was ever there. Neo's semblance is to create illusions, but said illusions are tangible and can be shattered. So that's why she deflected most of Yang's attacks and barely attacked her at all--she didn't want to give away the fact that she wasn't even there to begin with. That's why it was so easy for her to just vanish upon seeing Raven.
Then who the fuck threw yang into the ceiling
Take notes, Battle of Haven, this is how you do a large scale battle. You’ve got tons of heroes and villains with varying skill levels going toe to toe, so of course it’s going to be a chaotic mess of victories and defeats. Neo defeats Yang, Blake defeats Torchwick, the White Fang guy defeats Weiss, and then Blake escapes with Weiss.
Meanwhile, the Battle of Haven is an entire fight consisting of the good guys and bad guys being in a stalemate with nobody going down for 20 minutes until Raven manages to defeat Cinder in a skirmish completely disconnected from the rest of the fight and snag the relic, making the bad guys retreat instead of continuing the fight because nothing had actually changed other than that the good guys had the macguffin now. (Seriously, why did they retreat? Cinder hadn’t been contributing to the fight anyway, and now Yang’s down an arm. I can understand Emerald and Mercury not being terribly invested in the fight with Cinder presumed dead, but for the love of god Hazel was there.)
Also, you know, in the train battle most of the fighting is actually on screen.
yeah the battle of haven was 2-3 episodes of them just standing while others are fighting 😭 but gladly they did some good fight scenes in vol 6 & 7, but 8... we're not gonna talk about THAT lol. but i do get it that we're in the pandemic, those animators r only staying inside their home.
I really miss the battles of Vol 1,2,3 they were explosive and bombastic.

I agree that Roman was taken by surprise with the dust semblance, but I don't think he really lost. I'm convinced he stops on purpose. I mean, the guy once had a blade to his throat and still got out of it. Yeah, he had his weapon there, but what's to stop him from sliding his foot to throw Blake off balance and grabbing it again. Instead, he just sort of gives up and lets Blake kick him. I feel as if he isn't fighting seriously in this encounter. Then I also remember he's a survivor type. There's no way out of this, and the train will crash. So, he chooses to let Blake hit him and he just "plays possum" until she leaves. Then gets back up and then uses the rest of his aura to survive the train crash. It's probably then he decides to let Emerald and Mercury take him to get arrested so he can be broken out by Neo later. The way he says "Well, it's about time" in volume 3 episode 9, it's like he was expecting Neo to get to him. And what better way for Cinder to implant a virus on Atlas tech than a guy who's already on board with piloting skills?

@@yikan1107 Yeah just watching Season 1 and especially Season 2 compare to the seasons that comes after, really make you realize how good Monty Oum was at animating fight scene, the guy was definitly a genious at this.
Action sequence was out of this world. Much better than the new seasons.

Her eye color is kind of based on her emotions. She saw that her life was in danger so her eyes turned white. This would make sense because she's a mute.

@@boxyscorpion904 It’s so sad. His art and legacy should at least try to be honoured or continued. I feel like they’ve totally abandoned his style.
@@jordanjmichaels Animators are allowed to have their own styles, it isn’t exactly fair to expect them to give that up to imitate someone else’s style. But I do agree that current RWBY’s choreography lacks the flair and attention-to-detail that Monty brought.

The animation in the show has improved a lot, but whoever is working on these two characters in particular, especially Blake, they haven’t really kept up with the character development and skills in the show. I think it’s really disappointing. I don’t really watch anymore.
