This may be Valve's TRUE MOTIVE with the Steam Deck OLED...

  • The Steam Deck was announced to the world in 2021 to a public who was hungry for a way to take their computing and PC gaming on the go. Fast-forward to today and the standards have raised - people want that same experience but a bit more premium. Enter the Steam Deck OLED!
    That's certainly what the buzz seems to be all about, but did Valve first decide to deliver this experience because there was demand for this product? What if there was another reason Valve wanted to park these Steam Deck devices into the households of ready and willing Deck-goers? And what if that reason aligns with the 2015 advent of Steam Machines? To know that for sure - what even was the point of Steam Machines...?
    Pepe Silvia, Pepe Silvia - everywhere I look, it's Pepe Silvia!

    definitely why I prefer Steam Deck over windows handhelds. Valve has always been trying to distance itself from Microsoft because they have always feared them blocking Steam on their platform, so creating their own OS solves this problem perfectly and makes me excited to move to Linux after Windows 10 dies.

    • @Petrisha
      @Petrisha  Před 8 měsíci

      I did cheekily jab at the ROG Ally but there's room for Linux and Windows-based handhelds alike! It does seem to be that Microsoft is starting to erect some walls though, so I think a lot of people are starting to think like you and are preparing for when they know Windows is gonna feel unusable to them. Thanks for watching!

      Yep,👍👍 Microsoft kind regretted how open their platform is.
      ....& They Were were doing some "questionable" stuff, trying to get 3rd party developers, stores & users to funnel things through their Windows Store. Almost no one liked the store platform & no one would buy from there (gamers). (A few changes in MS leadership, philosophy & an lack of game sales on the Windows' storefront & MS decided to put Xbox games on STEAM..etc)
      Also, if U really look at what they are doing & MS themselves has hinted that they also want to move from the installs on local operations platform to a more cloud as a service platform for gaming & business (SaaS).
      ....Linux is the most widely use OS (just not on Desktop).
      ...So they will probably eventually do it through hosting on some form of AZURE.
      Valve realize this q long ago release the Steam Machine(s) both as a kind of warning ⚠️ to Microsoft & half effort experiment hoping 3rd party manufacturers would do most of the grunt work.
      ... However Valve didn't account for or already knew for the impact the OS would have on the success if the S. Machine. & Started work on Proton with other teams & improve Steam OS to work with native Windows games.
      The other main issue valve had, was there was TOO many 3rd party hardware developers with different configuration.. etc.
      There was also a community push, for Valve to be more invested in their Hardware & other projects. Not do a passion project & forget about it.
      I forget her name but she was very impactful around 1 of the launches of the Index.
      Valve would be making STEAM CONTROLLER 🎮, but the main reason why Valve stop making them, because they "KIND OF" lost a Lawsuit to SCUFF.
      ....A company that basically sues any company that designs & sells anything other than basic top button & shoulder configs for Controllers (especially if it's any kind of under controller back buttons or pads).
      ...I think 🤔 they even tried sue playstation for that little plugin electronic Dual Shock 4 button adapter & Still tried to sue Valve for the STEAM DECK'S scheme.
      ..& if U every wonder why XBOX Elite controllers with extra back buttons were expensive, Scuff is part of that reason.
      👉Taylor McVicker is good source for a lot of Valve info & news .

      Valve pretty much has stated in the past that SteamOS is their safety net in case Windows closes! Newell worked for Microsoft so he knows them pretty well! Valve simply is playing the survival book lesson 1, always have some kind of exit path in case of the "s***" hits the fan! Funny thing is Epic does not have this exit route, but they always can fall back on the engine as sole base of revuene and survive smaller! So their exit path is ingrained in their products!

    • @Petrisha
      @Petrisha  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Steam Deck is well-liked but Valve is not producing multiple millions of these every 6 months, so that probably rules out them receiving the best bulk rates - but a bulk rate nonetheless! Lower order numbers would also impact the speed at which R&D pays itself off, so that's worth consideration in tandem with general overhead. Valve is privately-held so we'd never normally know what their sales goals are for this hardware, which would ultimately solve what their margins are looking like at all SKUs. Thanks for watching!

      @@Petrishaehh they can take losses on the hardware because of their software. They have a separate market that's supporting the hardware costs. Think about Nintendo, they take losses on the switches, but BIGGER. Steam still has millions of people who haven't even bought the steam deck, spending money on the software on a regular basis. The business plan is clean. Nintendo still depends on people buying their hardware in order to pay for the software.

    There are many good reasons for Valve to manufacture Steamdeck. First off all to sell more games. I think its quite impressive that other PC handhelds are able to somewhat compete with the Steamdeck, since their only profit is unit sold. Don't get me wrong, I love what Valve is doing, but you wouldn't want them to be the only option for PC gaming. Us consumers need the competition.

      I just hope they stay competitive in that area, I remember the desaster the netbooks had when Asus with a good first linux based device opened a marked and then microsoft shoehorned everyone else after asus and asus themselves to use windows which was absolutely not working out for that category of devices. Result, the entire device segment fizzled out after a few years, thanks also because the entire windows software did not fit well for the small display!
      The best would be valve has tons of success and incentive to drive Steamos forward while all others either provide windows or steamos as well and try ti differentiate themselves!

  • @didjidks
    @didjidks Před 8 měsíci

    The point of steam machines was to attract console players to steam. The point of steam deck is the same (trying to attract switch players now). The reason they couldn't just install Windows on it is probably because they just want to try to offer the best console-like experince while already having a huge game library. Why would a console player buy some PC box and see empty windows desktop on it? What should he do next?
    When you launch steam deck, the first thing you see is your steam library, you understand that this thing wants you to play games on it, like on consoles. Sure you can just pre-install Steam on windows and add it to autostart, but it still will work clumsy, the more bloated your windows installation becomes, the more delayed the launch of steam would be after startup of windows. It's not a console, it's just generic windows with steam on top of it from a player's pov.
    Another reason for developing steamos is that valve is in total control of it, not in authoritarian sense. If they want to add new features, they add it, if they want to optimize something, they do, to the point that Vulkan drivers for AMD gpus on Linux are written by Valve (well, partially), all that while the system still remains completely open. They don't have to rely on Microsoft, on their updates system or other things that they're not in direct possesion of (afaik all drivers for windows requires them to be signed by microsoft).
    Also, Proton actually improves backwards compatibility. Some old games already do not work on win 11 but can work with Proton. If a person buys game on steam and 15 years later after some windows update this game stops working is steam to blame? You can't just install older windows on modern hardware because some drivers will be missing, but you can install older Proton and play the game with it.
