Today is the 15 year anniversary of Hurricane Charley. The very small 5 mile wide eye went over the north side of Punta Gorda on Friday the 13th August 2004. It was the start of 4 Hurricanes in 6 weeks, a run like I've never seen before. Charley was all about the wind, too small to really be a storm surge problem. You can see the wind blowing water out towards the ocean under the bridge. According to the official NHC writeup, Charley had winds near 150mph when it came ashore. What you don't see in this video because I turned the cam off . . . the wind jacked up another 15-20 mph seconds before the calm eye. It got very bright and intense and I thought I saw the pearly gates. But water was blowing everywhere and the lens would have been covered in droplets so you would be able to see much. Now the audio would have been cool though. The guy with me is Mark Rackley who found cover in a nearby Pub - lucky guy.

Charley was brutal. I lived through it here in Punta Gorda. You are right about the winds. Nobody understands that Charley was much worse than what they said. It was probably a Cat 5 but because we had no water damage from a surge. They did not care about us so much. The wind damage was bad enough. This town would still be ruined if we had had a storm surge 😱😢

Ok,WOW was that intense! Again, great footage like always Jim!!!
I watched through the whole video and made some time stamps:
Things start to great crazy around the 17:50 mark.
18:04 Jim says "Yee Haw we're having fun now baby!"
19:44 what looks like part of a storm gutter falls in front of camera view.
Power flickers again at around 21:04 to the far left. With some sparks at 21:05 -21:10.
Things really start to go down hill around 21:45.
Jim at 22:18 : "Oh my god, Oh my god!... That'd scare anybody".
Power appears to go off for good after Jim cleans the camera lens at 22:39.
Jim at 23:00 : " Gunna have to get out of here! Getting too dangerous, gunna have to get outta here."
At 25:08 a piece of sheet metal moves dangerously close to the camera and Jim, before it jets out of camera view at 25:23
Jim at 26:12 : "This town is coming apart!"
Part of the sign on the top right shreads off at 26:15 .
Bottom/middle part of the sign on the top right flies off at 27:02 .
At 28:53 a ton of small debris fly off.
    Jim at 28:59: "Holy cow."
Starts to get really intense at 29:07 when debris fly around the camera.
At 30:15 a huge gust of wind hits and causes larger debris to move around with the rest of the top half of the sign on the top right to fly off.
Bulidings roof to the left rips off at 30:41. Winds continue to get worse as even more debris move around and become airborne. At 32:05 camera cuts to show Jim in another place, winds are howling.
At 32:38 you can see a street light tilted towards the ground.
At 32:50 Jim shows his car has it's back window smashed open.
At 33:08 a closer shot of the street light tilted towards the ground due to the storm's strong winds. You can also still hear the roar of the wind on the audio.
At 35:02 you can see a palm tree on the ground.
At 35:56 Jim walks in front of the camera to tell about his experience in the storm so far, with Charley's winds still being heard roaring around him.
At 38:00-38:18 he shows some of the street damage done by Charley.
38:19-end of video, Jim talks about his experience in Hurricane Charley to other fellow chasers. With Doug K. Saying to Jim "This is Ground Zero".

I lived in Port Charlotte not far after crossing the bridge. Worked in Punta Gorda for the county. It was awful. Went back to work on Monday after the hurricane on Friday. Our building was gone, but went to sheriff's building answered phone calls from people who needed help 12 hours a day 7 days a week for weeks. Very sad and stressful. We bounced back, thank god.

The part I like about hurricanes is before the wind and the rain starts. There's a really, dark, ominus calm before the storm. All around is deadly calm and silent (you can hear a pin drop). The air begins to get much warmer and more humid as the storm approaches.

The speed in which the winds accelerated during landfall with Charley were just exceptional.
The only other I can think of that did the same in Florida was Andrew in 1992.
Now in 2022 we got Ian, tracking the same path as Charley. Much larger however and moving slowly inland in comparison

I was in port Charlotte, it was terrifying, so much destruction and devastation, very scary storm to live thru! Had several tornados drop in my neighborhood, I'm more scared of tornados than anything, way to unpredictable!! I'm so thankful charley was so fast moving and we didn't have any surge, I think if we had many wouldn't have survived! We were without power and water for well over a month but I'm thankful that's all we lost, only minor damage, so many lost everything, parts of our town were leveled. Never even thought about it turning into us either, when it did it was to late for everyone to prepare! It was a very scary storm and a very sad day after he passed thru, literally looked like a war zone in a 3rd world country! So happy just about everyone lived to tell their story, even as sad as many of them are! It sure did bring a small community even closer tho!
