- Centralia, Pennsylvania needs no introduction. The ominous ghost town with the mine fires down below it. This was the location of the very first video I ever filmed for CZcams.

Awesome video MI!
Great video, I drove truck for many years but I do not think I would have took that contract, I would be afraid of crashing through the highway or something, 😂
There is a similar place. New Castle, Colorado. But the only vents are natural, and you can still see the heat coming out in the winters.
I found an article that said Todd Domboski (the boy who was swallowed by the hole) died a couple years ago at 53. Sadly, he had drug issues and apparently had ongoing nightmares after the incident.
I'd have nightmares too!
He looked wired up in that footage of him and his mom .
He died from a Dr induced drug overdose. The Doctor was later charged for this.
I've driven through this town...twice. Once in 1991 while returning from a family vacation when I was 15. We drove on the graffiti highway, a few years before the state of Pennsylvania closed it down in the mid 90s and built the bypass on route 61. Second time was when I was on a business trip near Frackville in 2016, and did a drive-thru tour to see whatever was left. Also, as an update, the boy (Todd Domboski) who fell into the hole passed away a few years ago.
@bigcahuna42366 oh how sad.
Thank you Chris and Jay. It's mind blowing how it's still burning all these decades later.
And it will likely still be burning for hundreds of years
7:43 STOP, HAMMER TIME!!!
I was seeing if anyone noticed 😂
You can’t touch this comment.
Solid vid. Gotta say that if I had $1 for every Centralia vid on YT I could have a nice steak dinner and a night of drinking.
My Grandparents are buried in Centralia. I used to hang out there as a kid, when it was still a living community. I had friends who lived there. There was bar (one of many) on the main street run by a sweet old lady who would sell us beer when we were about 15, lol. We played football in a big empty lot. It was a friendly little coal region town.
Btw, you didn't mentioned the 1991 film Nothing but Trouble, written and directed by Dan Akroyd. Supposedly, Akroyd drove through Centralia late one night and that gave him the idea for the town in his film.
Centralia will always be fascinating to me. I love how Silent Hill is based on it.
A local friend gave me a tour of Centralia back in the early 1970's. People hadn't moved out as of that time.
The Movie Silent Hill is based off the Playstation 1 video game of the same name. The video game was inspired by the story of this town.
That's an urban legend. Roger Avary used this place as an inspiration when writing the film Silent Hill (2006) and it has nothing to do with the original games.
@cebruthius movie literally has same creatures as the game. You have no clue what you're talking about
@cebruthius obviously you've never played the game. The movie is almost a carbon copy of the original game.
Ahhhh the real life silent hill … very nice mobile
Nicely done. I remember going through Centralia in the 1980’s on route 61, seeing the vent pipes and all. I also recall this story made national news. But I haven’t been up that way in almost 20 years. It’s a bygone era. People from central Pennsylvania like to stay in the towns they grew up in and then continue that legacy raising families of their own. It’s a shame for them because this catastrophe, really, ended that for the townsfolk. The movie _The Town that Was_ is a good documentary capturing the history of the fire.
Hello Everyone! Thank you for the travel's Chris!
Been there 3 times. Walked every inch of the place. Last time was perhaps February 2013, NOBODY was there. It might have been the spookiest experience of my life
Love the Silent Hill thumbnail lol
I was just thinking that I saw the real reason people left Centralia. Pyramid Head is terrifying!
Friends and I used to ride quads all through there. Its even more surreal during cooler weather with snow in the air; it makes the steam more pronounced and hang in the air more. Have some great pictures of the highway and what was left at the time, yes those waves in the pavement make great jumps.
My friends and I took a trip across state from to Pittsburgh to see the town. At the time, the only person left there was the mayor. Sadly, he passed away. Great experience, just be careful navigating around.
The old fire station and church on the hill is amazing!
Thanks Chris and Jay i really enjoy your shows because they are informative and down to earth and i learn so much, i am not able to get out and see all the interesting places so i am glad you guys take me along with you on you travels and i love that.
It’s been awhile since I heard about this town. Thank you for making this video Chris, I hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work and take care!
You are indeed a remarkable traveler, on an interesting journey through life. Thank you for taking us along with you! Frequent watcher, occasional commentator here, but always fascinated with the journey. God Bless.
Thanks, I appreciate that
Thanks Chris and Jay, great insight into this tragic event!
Great video. I didn't know mines were under the whole town. That's dangerous even without the fire. ❤😊
A former Pennsylvanian, I well remember the news about this fire. We had a priest in my home parish who was from there, and had family there. I saw your initial video on Centralia, Chris, and now this. You do such a terrific job of bringing us these interesting stories. Thanks!
The narration in that history video sounded like it could be Martin Sheen.
That IS Martin Sheen no doubt
Definitely Martin Sheen
You’re correct it was a special that aired in i think 1982 on PBS narrator is Martin Sheen.
Martin Sheen must've sounded like a rugged old dude since he was 13 lol
Came to ask the same question, the consensus certainly seems to support this proposal!
Such a tragedy in such a beautiful place. I thought the church was torn down a few years ago, I'm happy to see it's still standing.
Shout out to Adam Teresky, the most knowledgable person on Centralia…..EVER 👍👍🇺🇸
Thank you very much
@@adamtereska8734 welcome!
Thank you, Chris! ❤
I've made a number of videos on Centralia. I live 45 minutes from Centralia and have followed the disaster since I was 6 years old. I'm 53 now, and when I go to Centralia, I recollect what the town was and is, and I still feel my heart break, every time.
This is the 2nd or 3rd video I've watched about Centralia Sad yet fascinating. Always enjoy your videos. The first one I ever saw years ago was when you were filming the location of the movie, The Wraith. Keep up the great work.
Great vid, nice work. I last drove through this town in 1987 and there were still homes with people living in most of them but there were signs everywhere that said “proceed at your own risk”. In spite of the danger of collapse and steam coming up out of the ground all over the place it was still a very nice looking town with well kept houses. Such a shame!
I went back and watched your first video from Centralia and it was published December 2010. I actually have watched it at some point before. You really put out great stuff.
I worked in Ashland PA for 8 years from 1980 to 1988 and traveled through Centralia everyday on my way to work. Knowing first hand residents, fellow employees and friends evoke memories that I will always remember. Thanks Jay for another great video!!!
Very cool video but very sad about the town of Centralia.
I been following from the beginning. You are definitely one of the best. I found Journey with Jay through you and I remember back when he was expecting his 1st child and how excited he was.
Absolutely love historical aerial's my greatest tool to finding abandoned history
My boss bought a few houses in nearby Mt. Carmel to renovate a few years back and I remember driving through Centralia every Friday when we'd go out there to work on the house. I used to be really into urban exploration when I was younger (Weird NJ places and stuff like that) so it really was interesting to finally 'see' Centralia and say I've been there. Even though there isn't much there left to see, I still found it very cool knowing the history of the place and knowing there's a fire raging beneath your feet that you can't see.
Wish I still had the time to do more exploring myself. I definitely miss it.
Thank you, Chris and Jay for returning us to visit Centralia, I compare it to a visit to Chernobyl on a smaller scale with not as many lives lost. It is saddening how much man has destroyed in mankind's quest to survive. 👍
Centralia is wild. I'll never forget exploring it.
Never heard of Centrallia so thank you for the story Chris I will research ❤
I had read not too long ago that the nearby strip mine spoil tip was the cause of the fire underground in the tunnels. Not the original story of a burning dumpsite. It was also a huge loss to nearby Byrnesville, which no longer exists. They completely raised that town expecting the fire to spread.
Thanks for revisiting such a beloved site.
Love and respect from
Lancaster County PA
**Razed**, I hope this helps instead of hindering.
When I was a kid in the south people had barrels in their back yards where they dumped and burned their trash regularly. Can't imagine a central burning ground. Incredible story!
I know plenty of people in the south who still have burn barrels or burn piles in their yards.
@@janmcguire5268 In a lot of places it seems garbage companies have moved in and charge a fee to have trash hauled off.
Here in Flint, Michigan, where I grew up we used to have burner barrels to burn our trash, then the big companies came in and paid off the Democrats to get all our trash for a fee of course. That was back in the late 60s.
@@BobbyTucker and now we've got ever expanding landfills that aren't decomposing. Ugh.
Great video. Always enjoy when you visit my home state. Centralia has been an interest of mine for a long time. Thank you very much!
I remember when I was young seeing a girl that lived beyond Centralia so I’d have to drive through there on that closed section of road and there were all these cracks on the side of the road going bright red and trees going up once in a while. It was pretty crazy steam vents coming out of the ground in random spots was like another world going through there
23:47 This house has many hearts.
I’m new to your channel and really enjoying it, thank you so much 😊
your urban exploration of this town is great, I'm glad you made this video and the editing is top notch, I was entertained and learning new things, also I know silent hill is based loosely on centralia, which is cool.
This is awesome. Thanks for going back, it's cool to see how things evolve here!
I don't know anything about planes, but maybe their fire extinguishers are like race cars? They have integrated fire suppression where lines are routed from the tank to common fire-affected areas like the engine, and around the driver in case they've caught fire. When you hit the button to activate the system, it just douses EVERYTHING. If planes work like that, the crew wouldn't have needed to see a fire or even necessarily know where it was.
Thanks Chris for heading up there again.
Thx for the revisit. always entertaining!
So cool to return to the beginning for you! Imagine what it was like many years ago, no one ever knows, a disaster could happen where you live
I was 12 years old at the time that happened, and I lived an hour away from Centralia in the town of Montoursville, PA.
Love this. I live about 2 hours from Centralia and have been up there many times in my life. Awesome to see you in my area exploring a place I spent a lot of time as a teenager. Keep up the great work
I drove a delivery route that had a stop in Shamokin and I would stop in Centralia and walk out the ridge and look around. Cool place. You can hear the fire roaring down in the vent pipes.
Great video. I truly enjoyed it. I was intrigued the whole time 🙂
Great video! I went on a road trip from Maine about 8 years ago and Centralia was one of my stops. I remember the giant cracks on the highway there. I took video of the side streets with empty lots that were overgrown I thought it was eerie. We visited one of the cemeteries and it was hard to imagine these were people who once lived in a vibrant town thats no longer quite there.
Thank you both for taking us along. Interesting video.
20:00 hahaha… just say it!! 😂
I live 10 minutes from Centralia and grandparents grew up in this town so I always heard stories. This is the most informative video I've watched so far about this town. Quality content my dude.
Thanks for the video guys. I had heard about Centralia all through my childhood. My father was from another mining town called Spangler and my grandfather was a miner. This happened when I was a girl and many a dinner at my grandparents' table lead to talk of this town. Fear of it happening there and almost like Centralia was cursed or something.
Chris and Jay wish I would have known you guy's were in the area. Would have loved to have said hi! Centraiia was my first Stealth Hammock Camp overnight during snow storm Izzy. Really cool place thanks for the video.
Chris, as i told Jay on his video, this is the greatest video you ever did also. Keep up the great work my friend
Thanks Chris, you and Jay made the events and history of Centralia more understandable. I'd heard of this town but never understood what set the underground fires off? Because you've added documentary footage it puts it into perspective. I feel so sorry for the residents, it was a beautiful town in Pennsylvanian countryside. 👍🏻📽️🤗
I enjoy your channel. Very interesting video.
Love this video. History is important we need to tell these stories so people never forget. 💯
Great vid...thanks for sharing with us!
Wow that was very interesting thanks for sharing
Wow I cannot believe this, this was the first video I ever watched of yours
Very interesting video, Chris. I had no idea that this accidental fire happened and that it is still burning today.
Thank you for posting this,I never heard of it,so sad!
Wow. A nice recap and exploration! Powerful ending too.
Great vid!! Very interesting and informative. Thank you❤
That was a awesome video thank you so much
Such a place..... I recently just went there for the second time as well....and literally have no words... Walking around there is a feeling you can't describe! Good stuff guys! xoxo
Great video again. Loved watching it. So Historic!
Thanks!
Thank you for making this. This is one of the best videos I've seen about Centralia. I also liked that you talked about the 1948 plane crash and showed the grave of the unknown passenger. I have heard about this but I never seen it.
Thank you for Wonderful video on Pennsylvania!! Your Channel takes us to exciting places and you give us a historical background! 🌺
So interesting~thank you‼️
I just watched your latest video and thought I’d check your channel when I saw this video. I was born next town over from Centralia.
This is a great one!
Just wanted to say that you presented your video very well. Good job, boys!
Awesome video Chris, was worried you might fall in to one of those pits !
A very well done video!! Thank you for all of the interesting facts and pictures that you have shown!!
When i saw the title i was thinking you've done this before. Cool to see a return video and more info.
respect for mother earth
Great video as usual love the old footage i wish you made this video longer
❤ I watched the whole vid,❤ thanks for that, exploring with u is a whole new world❤
Maybe I'm a noob, but I had no idea the town was leveled like that. That's insane seeing the blocks and rows with nothing there anymore.
I live up in NY state about two hours north. Centralia's story has always fascinated me. Such a tragedy. I always wondered why this wouldn't cause a lot of forest fires. Great video.
Very interesting, thanks.
Excellent documentary!!
This story still fascinates me along with Titanic and the Bermuda triangle
Thank u for another interesting video sir please keep them coming 😊
The pipe in the cemetery is to allow ghosts out. 😂
I live in PA, but at the other end, never visited. Thank you for the video!
i first knew about Centralia because of one of the books by Bill Bryson...so awesome you are doing a video about it...its fascinating
Your Centralia video was my first one I saw. I also didn’t know about the city either.
Wow I never knew this. I guess I was asleep during this day in class , thank you
Chris -- this is how I initially found you and I've been following since. My family is from Schuylkill County, my father and uncles worked in the mines.
Great video!
Quite honestly I believe that that can happen anywhere cuz we never really know what's down underneath the ground "everywhere"!! Who knows😮 Happy Father's Day😊
“In my restless dreams, I see that town.
Silent Hill.”
That is certainly interesting about all that, just crazy, it reminds me of back in the olden days spent with my cousins. 💙
Fascinating
