- This facility originally opened as a Tuberculous hospital in 1916. By the late 1980s it was repurposed as a state prison. The entire property was closed and abandoned in 2013.

This is so close to my childhood. My grandfather was a physician and superintendent of a Tuberculosis sanitarium In Kansas. My father was a staff physician. Staff had hones on the grounds. My father had grown up there before he went to medical school and then went on Staff after he came back from WWII. I lived there the first 2 1/2 years of my life and then went back to stay with my grandparents every summer. With proper antibiotics Tuberculosis finally came until control and the hospital was turned into a mental institution. Recently I was planning on driving through on a move further East. I pulled it up on Google Map and was astonished to find it's now a prison. The place I grew up is a prison. That's a jarring realization.

i hate how state and federal government in the us let buildings and expensive equipment rot and then complain they don't have any money. they could have converted that building for another use or sold it and at the very least given the medical equipment to a third world country

I agree, I don't know how many of these abandon videos I have seen with millions of dollars worth of MIR, CAT scan equipment now useless. The arrogant, selfish owners and government would rather have it rot away than let someone get use of it for free or pennies on the dollar.
Local governments don't have money for places like this. Because no one wants to prioritize healthcare, especially mental health care. Selling this would cover like one month of anything, and then they'd have to buy land to make the next hospital or whatever.
There are more empty homes than homeless people btw

I'm amazed at how there are so many abandoned buildings across the US - it's a shame they can't be used in some way perhaps for homeless people.

Yeah.. And a bunch of sad sack vandals always gotta ruin everything. There were soooo many holes in those walls. The only place I didn't see any vandalism was in the main chapel. Guess they thought God would put his wrath upon them...hah...

A shame it wasn't used to help the homeless, and other ways to support low income, etc. Here's what our taxes pay for, and how they throw it away, without a thought. They didn't ask, we the people. Thanks Chris, and Jay.
Absolute great point. Instead of spending money building homeless shelter's, this place could have been altered to have them stay there.

A big reason for the amount of homelessness is mental health problems. These facilities used to house a lot of those people. So it was being used to help the homeless in an indirect way, however nasty evil people turned public opinion on these types of facilities
@@notsojoerogan Exactly. Once better medication became more the norm, these places just shuttered their doors. Of course there are mental hospitals now, but they're not meant for long term stay like these ones were. I believe they should still exist (minus the barbaric treatments).
They should take places like this and convert them to homeless housing with mental health facilities, job training facilities, addiction counseling, etc. A place where we can rehabilitate the homeless that want an opportunity to get better and rejoin society.
Nah, it's easier for the crooked politicians to say they need money to buy them tents, needles etc and sift off at least 65% of the funds.

6:17 Carol Hines was named in a case called Dunyan v. Pennsylvania department of corrections back in 2017. The case was regarding civil rights of prisoners/patience.
Which is when it became possible for inmates to sue over toilet paper. In all seriousness though, the prisoners who are deserving of basic rights are pretrial detainees and those in prison for bullshit reasons like drug possession!

2013 wasn’t all that long ago. The decay and damage of the entire place seems like it would be several decades worth of abandonment.
Man, I wouldn’t even be touching any of that without gloves haha. This place is interesting though! Honestly the cages look like what dogs would be staying in. Looks like a kennel kind of place. Wild! 🥺
The buildings could been used for a lot of different organizations. Could have been used for military , schools , hospitals or summer camps instead of closing them down.
Should be utilizing these abandoned properties all over the US for shelter/work / rehab for the poor and homeless ✅

Just to let you guys know when you go into some of these places watch when you go around some of the old X-ray equipment. If it is damaged or was not properly dismantled it could be dangerous. Now I mean I could be wrong but I am sure the same states that left these buildings in such a wonderful state repair wouldn't do anything like that.
Always something new: radiators at 13:38 hung halfway up the walls of a high-ceilinged gymnasium is something I've never seen before! These places always give me chills of despair. Imagine being locked up and seeing the sky, even when you're outside, seen only through chain-link fences topped with rolls of razor wire. (The poor, ravaged and weathered carcase of the raccoon can spark your imagination of what would happen to a human who tried to go over the top.) Still, some parts, such as the chapel, looked nice enough, even restful... Thanks, Chris.
Chris, thanks once again for showing me a Pennsyltucky I never knew, despite almost 40 years’ residence there.
You should check out Leavenworth prison. It’s abandoned now. Most buildings there are renovated into offices and things like that now but the walls are still there and I think some of the buildings are still set up as a prison.
I'm sure if any of the people who was comitted in this place was alive today would have lot of horrible stories to tell about this place.

In those places people were tortured by the state,and locked in those cages like animals,it would be haunted by the ones that perished in that horrible place...
When I was a teenager in L.A they had these abandoned mental facilities all over. There were 2 we used to explore through. These were really huge facilities and we even made a little money stripping out the copper piping out of one. They just shut all these places down and let them rot.
PA & NJ were littered with them as well. One in Allentown PA was just knocked down. Where they filmed the M. Night movie GLASS.

I remember traveling the back roads in Texas. I found a building on the side of the road that must've been a mechanic shop in the old days. The only way I knew it was shop because the old faded painting in the wall referencing prices for tire repair or spark plug cleaning I don't remember. A couple hundred yards down the road were more structures. Some had graffiti from the Vietnam era like class of 71' and old debris from the 80s. In another house a found a piece of porn that was folded up in the door jam of a house. It was sticky and a little crunchy to open but it was 1981-83.
I found a abandoned residential home after that. You could clearly see it was beautiful house at some point. The roof was there but the ceiling was gone, leaving the top of the walls exposed. It had hard wood floor above a crawl space basement of about 2.5 feet. There was missing section of floor so to enter the house I had to balance on a beam to enter. Once inside there was nothing there but I remember seeing the shiniest spoon sticking out of the dirt in the crawl space. I was trying to build up the courage to grab the spoon from the crawl space but the floor groaned under my weight. I heard a movement in the other side of the wall. I grabbed my knife tighter and peeked around the corner. I didn't see anything. Then suddenly the house came alive with noise like buzzing. I seen wasps crawling out of the walls. These fucking texas wasps were fucking huge. The ENTIRE house woke up. It was a loud buzzing noise all around me. Wasps were climbing out of every hole possible. I got the hell outta there glancing at the spoon as I balanced over the exposed crawl space. I ran to the car avoiding the tall grass for snakes. I'm running to the car swinging my hat. I could still hear a wasp near my ear, as my hat swatted it away. Somewhere in my stuff I have a picture of me running out a a abandoned house in rural Texas swinging my hat hauling ass.

Chris..you are so consistent..great narration..you provide facts,and perfect slow panning of the camera..but..be aware there is mold in here and other places..i hope you get a check up at least 6 months out of the year..some molds can bring havoc to your health..

This hospital (before it became a prison) reminded me of the Williowbrook State School scandal in Staten Island, NY. It closed in the 80s for the mistreatment of the clients. I would've worn a mask in there

Now it can be a large homeless shelter.

Just guessing...but I'd imagine the amount of lead paint and asbestos remaining in that place would make converting it to usable space in 2021 and beyond would be financially impossible. Likely why it was left to rot and neither being repurposed or demolished.
It wouldn't be financially impossible to mend those buildings, but it would be quite pricey!

I read the accounts of the horrible abuse , (physical and emotional)
of the mentally ill prisoners and it is extremely inhumane, shocking and very very sad! I bet no one was held accountable. A hydroponics co. now uses some buildings and lets visitors explore/tour this hell hole. Terrible !
