  • Bows can be made out of many type of materials and tools at low cost. in my previous videos, I built a few bows from old bicycle wheels . They can be as cool as bow made form PVC pipe especially when it can function as a normal bow or even can do bow fishing with it. I built one of bow with the inspiration from the Green Arrow bow, or Oneida compound bow. This time, I would like to present you my new folding surival bow I made from an old rusty leaf spring which I bought at the local salvage yard and I also insert the steel limbs in PVC pipe I flattened. I. After several test shot at the target, i think one day, I should use it to do bow fishing a long with my crossbow. It's also fun for shooting this bow vs coke. The draw weight is 50lbs at 28 inches.. Each limb is 2mm thick, 1.5cm wide at the tip and 3mm thick and 2cm wide at the base and each is 45cm long. The riser is 55 long and 3.5cm thic, 5 cm wide.
In this bow making process, I let the steel cool down many time with water during the grinding. Sorry, I should have mentioned it in this video like in my provious video about Korean steel bow making. The elasticity is not affeated after lots of shooting and leaving the string unstrung, there 's no bow memory or lose of draw weight.
I also did it when I tried to reduce the draw weight, originally it was around 80lbs, so grounded them thiner at the edge and thicker at the base until I got around 50lbs. it's also lots of work. i intentionally made the limbs till backward to reduce the draw weight.
The hardwood is super dense. I pre-drilled the wood, and the screw kept breaking when trying to fasten the steel to the hard wood. I also tried different screw. So I decided to use nails by also pre-drilling the woods before driving them in. I also took the video of this failure, I should have included the clip in this video, but i just wanted to make the vides as short as I can. I am sorry that I didn't include some clips as I want the video to be shorter.
In my previous video, I built a similar bow using four coil springs making the bow strong enough to shoot small games or do bow fishing. And I also show how I made the arrow rest from a PVC pipe. In my previous video I show a bow that I made out of a Leaf Spring that I found an old leaf spring at the local salvage yard. It was a good bow and more powerful than this bow.

A wonderful idea of a folding bow.
    1) But with such intensive cutting, overheating and loss of elasticity of the metal can occur. Isn't it better to cool the metal with water when cutting?
    2) It would be better to make the strips thicker at the base and thinner at the edges. Thus, the bow will work more efficiently, the arrow's flight speed will increase.
    3) When fired before the arrow detaches from the bowstring, the tension of the arcs is already small. To compensate for this phenomenon and increase power, it is better to make the arcs tilt forward rather than backward.
    4) Metal holders on a wooden base will weaken over time, it makes sense to strengthen them with welded metal strips, and use screws instead of nails.

Thanks brother @Старый Бэб for your comment. from what I read, you have lots of knowledage and experience in bow making. I would like to answer your question as followed.
      1) It really help to retain elasticity of the steel. I actually let the steel cool down many time with water during the grinding. Sorry, I should have mentioned it in this video like in my provious video about Korean steel bow making. The elasticity is not affeated after lots of shooting and leaving the string unstrung, there 's no bow memory or lose of draw weight. Please check this point 1:29 in the video where you can see lots of water under the steel when I am grinding it.
      2) It 's a good idea. I also did it when I tried to reduce the draw weight, originally it was around 80lbs, so grounded them thiner at the edge and thicker at the base until I got around 50lbs. it's also lots of work.
      3) It really help make the bow stronger. but i intentionally made the limbs till backward to reduce the draw weight.
      4) the hardwood is super dense.

I was very impressed with the build of that bow. I did one with PVC pipe and fiberglass reflective rods. It was pretty ingenious when I got it done. I sent it out to my nephew's in California. I don't know if they ever used it or not, but it was something I created... And I never even got a thank you for my brother, or from my grand nephew?
I guess their little rich kids they get everything they want but I have to work for what I get and I appreciate things when I make them.
And I appreciate you. That was well done.

Pretty solid use for leftover leaves vs making knives. For the love of God man, sharpen up you chisel though. They'd probably work pretty nice for a compound too.

You might get a bit more performance from the spring, if you can keep it cooler during the grinding.
Heat will remove the hardness and toughness from the material fairly quickly.
A cold water dip here and there during the material removal will prevent that.

Thanks bro for the comment. Actually I let the steel cool down multiple time during the grinding. I forgot to mentioned it in the video. But if you go to the point 1:30 of the video, you might notice water under the steel. I have recorded how I let it cool down, but didn’t include the clip in the videos. I think I ll make a video of those clips that i deleted from this video.

You people... just stop talking about the things you clearly don't understand. Leaf springs are made out of carbon steel. After the leaf spring is hardened it goes through process called tempering. It goes back in oven for couple of hours and for spring temper usual temperatures are between 300-500 centigrade. So if he can heat up that steel past that temperature only then he can ruin the tempering. I highly doubt it you can reach 500 centigrade with a grinder.
