As a Roman Catholic and first generation Italian in the u.s.a.-----Watching this looked like it started to border on some superstious ritual. Thank the Madonna the cathedral is made of stone. I think its ridiculous. Concentrate the holy sacrifice of the mass, not all this nonsense.

It is a peculiarity of the Ambrosian Rite (which belongs to the Diocese of Milan) which comes from the first centuries of Christianity. On the occasion of the feast of a holy martyr, at the beginning of Mass, the celebrant sets fire to this globe of paper and cotton (called "lighthouse"): it, by burning, symbolizes the sacrifice of the martyr who consumed his life for the Faith in Jesus Christ. Nothing ridiculous or superstitious but a true liturgical gesture, typical of one of the oldest rites of the Church.
