I love... absolutely love Radiata Stories. Bought the game because of the art cover. Didn't realize it was a masterpiece under all that dirt. Played the game over and over and over. I must've finished it at least 8 times. I actually thought that there was some kind of hidden ending that I could do. I eventually managed to beat the super secret boss fairy lady at the hidden tower with Valkyrie thinking that there would be a reward. But instead it was just some hidden power perk that I no longer needed because i was super OP by then.
This is one of my favorite games of all time. Played through it so many times. I used to spend hours just hanging out in radiata and following characters on their schedule.

I am not sure that they gained levels either, or were outranked by other characters later - which was a negative for me as I usually enjoy taking an underdog character and making them insanely useful. This game is one of my favorite guilty pleasures, I'll admit it. Granted, one of the main things I disagree with you on is Jack being the best thing about the game, since his attitude was bland to me, on top of all of his mechanical faults. But I still have fun with it because I can see and appreciate the potential for a great game that I see in it. And unlike others where I see the potential for a good game but it still fails, Radiata Stories hits that little sweet spot for me where I have fun with the experience.
I don't usually say this, but you really missed out the full experience by not trying out the non-human path in addition to the human path. The whole point of the split WAS to make you feel conflicted. Your friends are humans. The cool guys are human. Fucking Elwen is human and Elwen is the coolest. But siding with the humans gives the bad route and the bad ending, and puts you on the same side as that shit-eating Cross. The nonhumans are weaker and less cool, but the better part of the plot and a very important relationship are chucked there so that it makes the decision a weighty and more meaningful one. One of the most striking childhood memories of this game to me was going with Ridley, only to find that the Mage academy kid Aidan, who I spent so much time levelling, turned on me and attacked me in an encounter. It's intentionally a difficult, conflicted decision on multiple levels and is genuinely one of my favourite decisions in any videogame.
Man I guess Nxy really is doing his job of being the boss of Void community and have only a few people know about it. I do hate the lock out of being able to recruit characters. Definitely a underrated game I dont think it even sold 500,000 copies but still at that time there was a lot of Rpg Coming out so it was a lot of competition. If it come out for ps3 I think it would have been way better.
I was really enjoying this until I heard the most insane statement that I've ever heard about this game - "all the non-humans look the same". The character designs in this game are so incredibly unique, and you're doing them an incredible disservice. Just pick two random non-humans of the same race from the wiki and ask yourself if they really look the same. You didn't even do the non-human route from my understanding! Otherwise, great video.
This game holds a special place in my heart but it is flawed to hell lol. Got the players guide for it. One thing i hate is that progressing the dialogue and kicking is the same button. I kicked so many people trying to speed thru dialogue
hopefully the star ocean remake with how bloody perfect it was done will give Tri Ace the attention they need to start remaking a ton of their other games like Radiata Stories.

I’ve played this game so many times and memorized so many things about it that I never considered how annoying certain aspects would be to a newcomer. It’s one of my all time favorites, but you are spot on with the critiques. Hopefully someday this game is given some new life to become the masterpiece that’s hiding under the surface.
When it comes to not being able to hit enemies when they're on the ground i wish these games had OTG(off the ground) attacks. They're very common in fighing games

I loved this game. I will agree that some of the recruitment requirements were too abstruse. I missed the window for Gerald my first time and ended up putting it down for over a year. When I picked it back up, I decided to emulate it and had a much better experience. Having several save states made the recruitment less of a headache and using turbo made getting around town and waiting for certain time windows less painful. Using save states also was a good workaround for the limited in-game saving. I would highly recommend the game with a guide and on an emulator.
Thanks again for covering this one. A good but flawed game. I wouldn't necessarily say it's even fun. But that's a sign that this game was memorable by virtue of its writing and Jack dynamic character. Also, the kicking. Def stirred up some OCD. I kicked everyone and everything in this game 😂

Given your reaction to Jack and the way you describe him, I'm now VERY interested to see how you feel about an upcoming game whose initial starts with T. It has, in my opinion, one of the best-written protagonists of any game ever, and was only dethroned from "THE best" because of some of the amazing work in things like BioShock Infinite and The Last Of Us. (Yes, it's that good.) I will say that my biggest problem with this game was that your NPCs don't level up; you inevitably outpace them and have to replace them with someone new. This makes complete sense from a gameplay perspective, given that they want you to keep recruiting new NPCs, but is frustrating from a player perspective if got emotionally invested in those early- or mid-game characters. The game's hook is that CAN recruit almost anyone; the game's systems make it so that you MUST.

i whole heartedly disagree that the nonhuman side isnt as interesting; in one play through i grinded the coblin sqaud(the 3 lil gobblins in pillowcases) i beat some of the extra dungeon too- which further expounds on not only the dragon lore but also jacks dad- as well as valkarie the final recruitment. available on either side. theres alo of lil red herrings peppered through the cast- displaying someones bad side but also how honest they are about their good side. like it woulda been easy to make all the seemingly bad guys awful people in general- but everyone has a compelling reason for their place in the story- hell even cross gets more more to him than just gunning for glory any means possible. sure they dont get enough screen time to fully expound on any depth but the fact you dont know anybody all too well is actually just realistic- just like how it was described. making friends isnt always easy and im generally ok with player unfriendly mechanics if it serves a ludo narrative purpose. kinda like how persona 3 sickness/reverse/ and only mc control plays into its games ludonarrative harmony so im ok with it being harder for me than it needs to be. but yeah screw that ant.
A Tri Ace game without Motoi Sakuraba but you still have Tri Ace sound effects makes this game uncanny. Just like Tales of Legendia the game just feels slightly off for that reason.
But more on the battle system the endgame(and some of the recruitment battles or rando story bits) is kinda hyper annoying dps/luck race. If the boss decides to hit you with their volty blast you are more than likely gonna die and since you can't revive Jack and can only use Jack it is game over. And yeah the armor and weapon changes in this game are amazing. I wish this was just a standard now instead of part of that rare indie gem or aesthetic because one of the dev team was that guy.
Also the game should be preserved and relased on modern systems. Hard to hate piracy and emulation... something fans of golden era of tri-Ace have been pretty tech savvy over the years. Bring up some good points and learn to appreicate a good game next time and learn about its secrets. Maybe use the official brady games guide next time. Or maybe a remake in the style of second story R can include QoL features for people who liked to not have to deal with figuring out the many secrets and fun you miss out on because the past 10 years of JRPG's have acquainted you to shit and hand holding.

So the game was already telling you this is the better side. That side is just more rough. When you pick that side it starts off pretty hard. So good luck if you play that side.
Yeah that SPLIT, is my worst part of the game honestly, both narrative wise and gameplay wise. I really don't care about the non human recruitment, But then if you care about Ridley you're forced to go non human, and Like you I chose the human side as my first playthrough.
Considering it looks like most of the time you sped the game up, some of this criticism sounds like it came from 2023 brain. Kinda like looking back before germ theory was a thing, and being disappointed that people didn't wash their hands. Definitely some valid criticisms, but also some strange ones. It's definitely not a perfect game - even for the time, but based on how you scored it as "good - not great, nor amazing" (i'm gonna try to translate this to a 1-10 scale: i'm assuming 10 = perfect, 9 = amazing, 7.5 = great, 6 = good), it seems much of the charm was lost on you. Which is fine, just a bit disappointing when comparing it to the actual scores it got from users. Seems like it just wasn't for you. Thanks for the review, hope you like the next one.
This review seemed to have rubbed some people the wrong way. I would actually say something more like a 7/10. The charm was most definitely not lost on me but the last 10 hours certainly rubbed me the wrong way. I think that frustration came out a bit too much in my review. I’ll be sure to correct that in any future summaries. As for the weird criticism,I’m being as authentic as I can. I’m trying to identify 10 things I liked and didn’t like and for some titles that’s not easy. I actually did like Radiata but not nearly as much as most it would seem. @@locloudanerpg Your opinion is yours and noone can or should expect people to be able to review a nearly 20 year old game like this while ignoring all the progress games have made over the years. Keep being as authentic as you can. Though i'll still get buthurt if it's a game I cherish to a certain degree (so basically just Radiata Stories, and the .hack//G.U. series from Playstation2). The later half of the Radiata main story can certainly be annoying... namely because there's a lot of that "sand" BS you pointed out, and also there's simply no good/happy ending no matter which path you choose. Though thats honestly probably part of the reason why it still has at least somewhat of a following... (well, that and the postgame is pretty great and gives you more time to level up and play with more of your recruited units). A sequel game exploring - and ideally eradicating - the "disease" would be great (probably told from the Human route perspective since that seems to be what is cannon from what I can tell).

Radiata Stories is one of my favorite RPG all the time, I hope that this game will be remade with better quality.
The bonus dungeon in this is completely worth it. Some extra characters in there make big differences.

So I do see your point but saying the plot was lackluster after picking only the bad side in the first place is your own fault.

@@going2021 I had no idea the human side would be the bad ending. I played practically blind and picking the Human side did not seem like it was entirely the wrong choice. Honestly, it sucks how ill prepared I was for the choice and ultimately hurt my experience. Perhaps I’ll beat the non human route one day. Thanks for the feedback!

That’s more reasonable. yeah that’s why you felt it was bad. believe me I also thought the Human side had great characters, so I chose it first just for it to feel like he’s oblivious and cocky about everything the entire time. Then the ending he didn’t even know what happened oblivious till the end😂. like you, I got greedy. Because of the hotties lol 😂 I remember trying my hardest to recruit that witch girl you were talking about 😂. On the non-human side, he is a great character and it’s a lot better for the story you’ll actually know what the hell is happening lol. I won’t spoil the ending in case you go back and play that side. It’s just a better story and yeah that’s like the good ending. When you think about the human side They hate all non human whereas the non humans don’t really hate the humans. I was like the nonhuman side is definitely the morally correct side to pick. So the game was already telling you this is the better side. That side is just more rough. When you pick that side it starts off pretty hard. So good luck if you play that side.

Yeah that SPLIT, is my worst part of the game honestly, both narrative wise and gameplay wise.
I really don't care about the non human recruitment, But then if you care about Ridley you're forced to go non human, and Like you I chose the human side as my first playthrough.
Considering it looks like most of the time you sped the game up, some of this criticism sounds like it came from 2023 brain. Kinda like looking back before germ theory was a thing, and being disappointed that people didn't wash their hands.
Definitely some valid criticisms, but also some strange ones. It's definitely not a perfect game - even for the time, but based on how you scored it as "good - not great, nor amazing" (i'm gonna try to translate this to a 1-10 scale: i'm assuming 10 = perfect, 9 = amazing, 7.5 = great, 6 = good), it seems much of the charm was lost on you. Which is fine, just a bit disappointing when comparing it to the actual scores it got from users. Seems like it just wasn't for you. Thanks for the review, hope you like the next one.
This review seemed to have rubbed some people the wrong way. I would actually say something more like a 7/10. The charm was most definitely not lost on me but the last 10 hours certainly rubbed me the wrong way. I think that frustration came out a bit too much in my review. I’ll be sure to correct that in any future summaries. As for the weird criticism,I’m being as authentic as I can. I’m trying to identify 10 things I liked and didn’t like and for some titles that’s not easy. I actually did like Radiata but not nearly as much as most it would seem. @@locloudanerpg Your opinion is yours and noone can or should expect people to be able to review a nearly 20 year old game like this while ignoring all the progress games have made over the years. Keep being as authentic as you can. Though i'll still get buthurt if it's a game I cherish to a certain degree (so basically just Radiata Stories, and the .hack//G.U. series from Playstation2).
The later half of the Radiata main story can certainly be annoying... namely because there's a lot of that "sand" BS you pointed out, and also there's simply no good/happy ending no matter which path you choose. Though thats honestly probably part of the reason why it still has at least somewhat of a following... (well, that and the postgame is pretty great and gives you more time to level up and play with more of your recruited units).
A sequel game exploring - and ideally eradicating - the "disease" would be great (probably told from the Human route perspective since that seems to be what is cannon from what I can tell).
@@aero4856 Yeah, so I had never played Radiata before this playthrough...but I absolutley destroyed .hack as a teenager. I'm honestly very interested to see what I think now. I've been holding off due to the rumors of a remake of the original four games. You go ahead and keep destorying me when I sh#$ on your favorites. It'll keep me humble. Next up is Shining Tears, Nightmare of Druaga and SMT Digital Devil Saga.
