We fought, and we fought hard. We were victorious and when your time eventually came, you left us while laying comfortably in a warm bed surrounded by your own, not in the mud surrounded by the sworn enemy. We were the ones who closed your eagle eyes.

Tortured by severe bondage" was a favorite song of V.I. Lenin. This song was written in Yiddish by the Jewish poet David Edelstadt (1866-1892). The Russian text, which has absolutely nothing to do with the original Yiddish, was written by Grigory Alexandrovich Machtet (1852-1901) in 1872-74. He worked on farms in America, but returned to Russia, and in 1876 was sent by the tsarist authorities to Siberian exile for eight years. The poem is dedicated to the memory of student P. F. Chernyshev (1853-1876). Arrested in August 1874. (the period of "going to the people") in the case of a propaganda circle in St. Petersburg and propaganda among the peasants of the Samara province; he died of tuberculosis in custody in St. Petersburg on March 27, 1876. His funeral on March 30 turned into a big political demonstration.

Thank you for the lyrics which I did not fully understand before. I wish you the best. Salutations de France ++
