    This is among the greatest music i ever heard in my life. I deeply recommend their only album THE SOUTHERN DEATH CULT. It makes me shiver. Ian astbury was never never again so good in his career. This band rips everything apart. Each member contributed an incredible intensity to the sound. And this is one of their few not so brilliant songs. By the way, Ian did a damn good job as Jim Morrison impersonator in the Doors, treated Jim´s work with the greatest respect.

    For those who didn't know, lead singer Ian Astbury lived in Canada during his teens and befriended Indians, then went back to England to play with a post-punk band. Upon coming to America, they became The Cult, but Ian's uniqueness made him uncomfortable with his band's later well-deserved fame.

    This was not the predecessor of The Cult. This is Ian Astbury before he left this band and formed a new one called The Cult with Billy Duffy. This SDC band was made up of Ian Asbury, guitarist David "Buzz" Burrows, bassist Barry Jepson, and drummer Haq Nawaz "Aky" Qureshi. But it does say something about the unique voice and stage presence of Ian Astbury that everyone thinks this is the same band.

    • @ThePsychoFish
      @ThePsychoFish Před 7 lety +1

      best I saw SDC was when they supported Bauhaus & it was Death Cult(great live) Then the Cult...& say's a lot about people if they don't know they were different bands etc etc

    • @krasteff
      @krasteff Před 7 lety

      It is the same band according to Peel who says in a show all their three names before playing Gimmick in 09/1984.

    • @ThePsychoFish
      @ThePsychoFish Před 7 lety +3

      well it's wrong! SDC split up Feb 26th 1983 & Billy Duffy left Theatre of Hate & Jamie Stewart left Ritual to join Ian in forming Death Cult 100% 2 different bands.

    • @krasteff
      @krasteff Před 7 lety

      Psycho Fish In fact J.Peel says: Once they were called SDC, then DC and now just The Cult and then announces Gimmick from Dreamtime. Also in Melody maker from I think 1986 ( I can check) there was a description of then the Cult as previously been (as SDC) 'severely gothic' - obviously referring to one and the same band.

    • @miguelrodriguez4498
      @miguelrodriguez4498 Před 6 lety

    One really has to SEEK OUT southern death cult.. although NOT insignificant, it was short lived. The Cult was established right away & has been the "name" for over 20yrs. Ian has alot of spirit, and is the heart of both bands in my opinion. Unique and unforgettable.

    This is Ian Astbury from the Cult before it became the cult, he has the best voice ever, and the swagger to go with it, this isn't punk at all, this is rock with an Ian Astbury funky swagger that only he can do and he is the greatest singer ever period ...

      this is pretty much when goth was forming from punk... "post punk" i believe would be the technical term, or maybe even deathrock. but no band ever really fits into just one label. and thats a good thing ^__^

    @garethac81 : I agree. I love Southern Death Cult. My friend who knew them way before me told me to listen to Love and it's one of the greatest album ever. I see that one being sort of generic and this one full of raw (sorry I know, cliche, but true) energy and feeling. I listen to it for how it makes me feel, not just how it sounds. I wish I could have been there at these shows.

    I always wished he'd kept this style. Though they may have been an influence, this sounds nothing like what the Sex Pistols did. Both punk, but very different. I can't think of any other band that sounded like SDC. All the instruments stand out too. Awesome guitar, bass, and drums. And Ian's voice is a one of a kind. I like Death Cult and The Cult too by the way. It's all good.

    SDC was one of my all time fave bands. My first trip to London was to see "Death Cult" as listed on the ticket being recored for "Dreamtime Live" at London Lyceum.
    Was a bit disappointed when The Cult went all "heavy" but hey, its all music ain't it? But we're all grown up now and I've got my tickets to see them with the Mish and KJ in September. Looking forward to that! :-)

    The Cult were recently guests on That Metal Show on VH-1 Classic. They have both hard rock fans and lovers of the older stuff. I must admit, Not every post-punk band can make that transition to hard rock the way they did. TSOL did it. Danzig did too. I'm sure there are a few others...

    3rd rate comment from a nowhere man, I'd say. The Cult wanted to reach the top, so a metamorphosis was needed. That takes a lot of drive and talent. They adapted and years down the line, meet us like an old friend, a great memory, with a happy, successful outcome. That takes intelligence. Love The Cult and the genius of Ian Astbury.

    Most punk bands took a page from the Stooges but you're right that the Damned did to a large degree. On Neat Neat "I feel alright" is basically a remake of "1970". I never loved the pistols though, they were kind of like the Monkees of punk rock, put together by Malcolm McClarren. To this day I still don't own any pistols records.

Southern Death Cult is very different from The Cult, as you've obviously figured. Still, they meant a lot to their small but devoted fanbase of dark punk lovers.

    Yes, they were deathrock. They aren't anymore, but they definitely were. It's kind of like when Pantera was glam. Pantera morphed into metal, but at one time they were glam. So Ian Astbury was deathrock stylin' then he morphed into rock. Shit happens, bands change. They want to get paid. More money in rock and roll and metal.
