I have TC-28 and I like it. I built a compact cook kit with it , Snow Peak Trek 700 Ti pot, Keith insulated mug , BRS 3000 stove and SS ring windshield. All can put in the TI pot. I once boiled water for instant coffee and cooked ramen with SP pot.

I absolutely love this video, amazing review on the lantern. I've seen this same lantern on Amazon some time ago but this is the third video I've seen on this particular item, couple other of the people that I've seen that have this exact same lantern are some guys that are very big into the prepper scene and reason why they liked it so much is because of the fact that it's meant to be referable. That's also why I enjoy this item I can't wait to get my own because I like to build as many minimalist item kits as possible to really see what thing or items will work best for you in any given situation. Amazing video once again. Much love and respect from the states!

    Excellent take.
I just got something very similar and I am delighted with it.
But you are bang-on with your weight assessment: its a trade off between weight and compactness.
Those little 100g butane cannisters are a real sweet spot for all round weight efficiency.
They are not "officially" refillable and come with safety issues if you do, but half filling them with butane is an acceptable risk by my reckoning.
This said, in a power outage, if you are vehicle camping, or you just want compactness at the expense of extra weight, I can see the use case.
I can also see how handy this might be on winter camps in northern locations, where an extra light source might come in handy when you spending more time in the tent, freezing cold in the dark.
Have to say though, if your cooking only involves quick boiling and rehydrating foods, 100g of butane or isobutane is going to last you far longer than people realise. If you avoid taking foods that require "boiling for 30 minutes" then frankly 100g is going to cover your whole trip unless you are on some expedition.

You have a point, but in an emergency situation the last thing you should be worried about is a random fine by park rangers. I carry two or three fire starting methods, and If I were to find myself in a desperate situation I would without a doubt make campfires to warm up, boil water and cook. though a lack of food is generally one of the least important things as most people have enough body fat to hike dozens of miles without eating. Water and temperature are far more important and cause most outdoor fatalities through hipothermia and dehidration.@@AirWaves77777

I believe that you purchase this for the "cool factor." My beautiful daughter would love to pull this off her shelf if the power went out. If she had friends visiting, the wow factor would have the group smiling. In the Philippines and likely most of the world, many small lamps similar to this are available. They are intended to mate to the larger flat-type canister you demonstrated, or with a different adapter, disposable butane canisters. We think having a few of this type of lamp in stock is a good idea since we have many assorted canisters of butane and isobutane fuel.

I hope they designed that canister so that it is properly reinforced to allow for multiple refills safely. I also hope they rated it for number of refills due to metal fatigue. I see they also offer a butane canister adapter, which is nice. One discrepancy I noticed is you say can take up to 35 grams of fuel while the website says the maximum capacity is 15 grams, though I could not find a manual on their site to verify. That and the glass chimney is different between the website and yours. I like the design of the lantern, but I don't think I would want the refillable canister. At least that refill adapter has a bleed valve to get the oxygen/air out. Cheers for the video!

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  Před rokem

I missed making that point in the video. The website does say 15grams and the manual shows 35grams. I went with 35grams as the size and weight of the canister appeared to justify it. I would not think a 15gram tank would be of much value. Thanks for commenting

I think this type of product is uesful to burn off residual fuel in standard cannisters. However, UCO CANDLE lights do same job without any extra parts or fuel exchange
risks. Whichever way you go fuel provided by others is expensive plus Taxes. As a hiking teenager we had no torches but learned to camp. Pitch tent, made bed two hours before sunset. Then cook on and in a wood fire. Your eyes naturally adjust to the available light. Too dark? Then its time for bed after a hot drink and flour dough wrapped around a stick cooked then with some melted butter and a sploge of jam. All prepped in embers of the fire. WITH NO TAX or somone elses profit to spoil it all

Normally cartridges are never filled past something like 75% I think is the number I remember. Definitely not much light is coming off this. Basically, we want for efficiency, a blue flame for cooking, but this flame isn't going to add much light, so the flame is less efficient in burning will actually put off more pollutants, but it will give more light. Yes, a mantle would be the way to get many times more light, but it would have to have a bigger glass globe too I'd suspect, as the mantle would be MUCH hotter closer to the glass. Yes, normal mantles break easily as they are basically the "ash" of the silk mantle that is put on. Perhaps a small screen, that is coated with platinum, would work well, (the platinum would act as a catalyst to make sure the flame was on the surface of the mesh) but it would probably cost so much (even a coating) that it wouldn't be practical.) Catalytic devices could do a lot more than they have done, but with battery technology increasing so fast, putting out light is not an area that can compete anymore with electrical devices. (I've worked on catalytic devices for a decade, but they really work wonderfully when you want heat, not light)

soto makes a lantern with a platinum "mantle" but it's really expensive, about $150usd. it was sold with the brunton name for several years, i have one and have mixed feelings about it.... it produces more light than a simple flame, but the light is very orange, not even slightly white like a typical fabric mantle produces. it's also tricky to light, it has a fuel valve and an air valve and you have to fiddle with both of them to get it lit, then keep it lit, then get it to burn at maximum brightness.

@@MarkYoungBushcraft it is not air it is butane/mix gas.
when you are filling it you are wanting to fill liquid butane back into the canister. the problem is that the hole between the two cartridge is extremely small (like 1mm). the pressure between the two cartridge is the exact same because they are both filled with the same gas and at the same temperature. so the liquid doesnt want to flow inside the lower canister because the vapour pressure of the liquid/gas is the same. it is like holding a water bottle with a very small hole up-side down. the water will not flow.
in order to fill your can you are pressing the button or causing a change by other means, it cause a sudden drop of pressure inside and force the upper cartridge (that contain liquid butane/mix) to boil due to the drop of pressure. because of this there is a disturbance inside and it helps the liquid from the top can to rush into the bottom one. since the one at the bottom has the gas on top, and the top canister the liquid at the bottom you are filling the lower cartridge with liquid butane/mix.
some systems like propane fill station use a different system to fill faster. for example having a special path inside the nozzle that allow a gaseous exchange between the canister and the filling station or even a pump to force the liquid fuel into the tank. they mostly use a return path for the gas to flow and allow the liquid to come in.
you must understand, the liquid is just condensed fuel gas. the pressure is always the same with most gases like this. even thought the liquid fuel level is changing the pressure is the same. the liquid phase is just changing into gas phase to replace the dropping level of gas. *each gas have its own pressure* it is mostly constant and only varies with temperature. it is called "vapour pressure". butane for example is around 30psi @ 20c. propane on the other hand is 130psi. this is why you should *NEVER FILL PROPANE into a butane system*
