I bought my first Rolex, a 2006 platinum Yachtmaster, in 2014 as a divorce anniversary gift to myself. I love the watch, it’s simplicity, elegant practicality, quality, value. I sailed 3500 nm from West Palm Beach to Mt Dessert Isle in ME and back to Annapolis (mostly solo) with this watch keeping my time the entire trip. It is one my few possessions and I cherish as well as my opportunity to pass it along to one of sons one day.

There are some amazingly accurate replicas out there. Rolex can always distinguish what isn’t theirs because they have their own foundry producing parts, using proprietary formulas. Broad spectrum photometry is like a fingerprint of metal composition. They can detect when an alloy isn’t meeting their secret specifications.

Wrist watches were simply not popular among the buying public at all when Rolex released that wrist watch. The movements in the competing pocket watches were no larger than that Rolex used in their wrist watch. And that Rolex watch did not sell particularly well.

My favorite isn't even mine. It's the one I just restored and serviced for a friend at work. Datejust that was a retirement piece for his father was in major need of attention. I have been doing clocks and pocket watches for quite some time and started on the wrist watches two years ago. Didn't take long for word to spread and people with higher end non-working prizes called on me. I must say.......utterly AMAZED at the level of quality and detail inside one of these! Anyone who actually does service work would have no trouble spotting a fake if open the back. Thanks so much for sharing! These are cool facts to pass along to those I know. Thanks for sharing!

how many watches do you need? get one and wear it daily. I prefer my rolex to an apple watch (received as a gift) but the things a smart watch can do is truly inspiring. though I enjoy my water proof sub mariner, the rolex takes 'licking and keeps on ticking"- oh yeah that's another 5 letter brand of watch .the apple watch did mot last as long. with the face seem to disconnect from the watch band - hanging by a cable? no desire yet to replace it- was a gift and happy with my Rolex. which does turn some heads- which is fine, by me and opens some doors. to conversation. I recall a couple of doctors thought it wasn't real.

Was it because back then they were merely considered a reliable timepiece instead of a status symbol?
Back in the day their pocket watches were modified to sit in a frame on the dashboard of military vehicles. I have one that I have had mounted into a leather 'wristlet' - it was my grandfather's war watch.

The first waterproof watch was exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 by W. Pettit & Co. There are several patents from the 1800’s about water proof watches and screw down crowns. The early ones are of course pocket watches but there are advertisements of ”submarine” wrist watches that are waterproof in newspapers dating back as early as 1916.

I paid only $1,600 about 8 years ago. I read that in that period, Rolex used 14 carat gold. Perhaps there was a recession. As you would know, on the face it is stated, "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified."

From what I understand that model is hard to come by, more demand than supply. No regrets. Such a great investment. I had always wanted one, ever since my dad got one in the late 60's. He probably paid around 3 or 4 hundred back then.
