  • We walked to the North Korean Border on the North Korean broken bridge! It was a unique experience, and probably the closest we will ever get to North Korea!
    Please keep the comments respectful. We all have different viewpoints on North Korea and we don't want to cause any arguments.
    We used our trip to Dandong to learn more about the history and information about North Korea. We used this as an opportunity to gain insight into how China views North Korea.

    We are James and Keli, previously Two Tickets Around the World. We are originally from Kansas in the United States and after many years of traveling during our holidays together, we took a leap of faith and moved to China. While we teach English during the week, we use our holidays and weekends to explore the different wonders of China.
    Once the borders open, we'll continue our adventures exploring the rest of the world. Until then, let's explore China together.

    As a Americans this is the closest we will ever get to North Korea. It is hard for us to describe how we felt while we were there, to see the emptiness in North Korea. Our day was spent with asking a lot of "why's?" between each other. This video is meant to give a neutral view into the tourist sight China created and for our viewers to learn about this piece of history.

    The North East of China, that is where the largest Korean minority live in China. There are around 2million Koreans living in China in that region. If you went to Yanji City you will see how Korean it looks.

      @@JamesandKeli ummm probably not that much history, but that's an interesting place to visit for sure. Koreans started migrating to China since the Japanese occupation era, now they are seen as compatriots by both Chinese and South Koreans. 10 years ago many of them would go and work in South Korea, many stayed. However they were discriminated by South Koreans because they were poor. Now the economy is better, and they started to migrate to other cities in China.

    There are many North Korean restaurants in Dandong, staffed by North Koreans, but they do not have the personal freedom to go out freely。
    There are many candid videos on China's Douyin(tiktok) website and restaurants in cities like Shanghai and Beijing that are responsible for earning foreign currency for North Korea

      We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn. Great location, walking distance to the bridge and a lot of food options nearby. A bit more expensive then we usually pay for but it was one of the few hotels available in the area!

    Pretty cool! I've had the chance to visit the Russia-China-North Korea border near Hunchun city on a student tour. Though I heard foreigners aren't allowed to visit.
    Chang Bai Mountain is a really popular destination in that region though, would be cool to see you guys visit that dormant volcano 😀

    Wonder if it’s because of the hordes of tourists on the Chinese side that the North Korean side are left empty, maybe they just don’t want to be stared at from telescopes or boats ; )

    • @JamesandKeli
      @JamesandKeli  Před 3 lety +2

      We aren't sure, it could be due to the COVID situation why there aren't as many people. We saw a few people who were working and guards but no people playing. The bridge that was used to get supplies between the countries has completely stopped all traffic (we think also because of covid)

    • @Iamp-itt
      @Iamp-itt Před 4 měsíci

      It's not because of the new coronavirus that the traffic has been suspended. In fact, it has always been like this. The bridge is basically used to transport food aid from China to North Korea. There is no other exchange, so it is rare to see vehicles coming and going. Ordinary people in North Korean villages are subject to strict regulations. Control, you cannot leave the village casually, and you cannot travel between villages casually. Even the villagers working in the farmland are guarded by guards, so you don’t usually see ordinary North Koreans wandering on the road, because it is a border area, and North Korea controls Extremely strict! There is a small city called Ji'an City on the Chinese border, where many Chinese Koreans live. The river there is very narrow, only a few dozen meters wide. Opposite is North Korean farmland. During the harvest season, many Koreans work in the fields. There were some guards guarding them, and Chinese tourists on the other side of the river also watched them work, forming a picture that was both funny and made me want to cry. North Korea is very mysterious to Americans, and it is also very mysterious to Chinese people. In the past, Many North Koreans smuggled into China at night. Some of the smugglers got married and had children there without being discovered. Some of the smugglers were discovered. They were arrested by the Chinese police and deported. Then the North Korean soldiers showed up in front of the Chinese police. They escorted these people back in a very cruel way. The Chinese police felt that the North Korean soldiers were too cruel. In the following time, the Chinese police arrested some smuggled North Koreans one after another. At this time, the Chinese government refused to repatriate. Slowly More and more illegal immigrants were being smuggled in. The North Korean government was very angry and protested to the Chinese government. Due to the political environment at that time, our Chinese government was helpless. When the Chinese police caught the illegal immigrants again in the future, we resumed the repatriation! It’s really pitiful. , but this is the internal affairs of their North Korean government, and our Chinese government has no right to interfere! I don’t know whether my country’s sending troops to North Korea represents justice, but I support my government unconditionally, because North Korea is China’s security barrier.@@JamesandKeli
