    Nice! I visited Dandong and the "Broken Bridge" in 2017. I had a chance to go into a North Korean restaurant and bought some probable "knock off" DPRK souvenirs here... just for fun.

      hehe nice one! I wish I had the time here to go to a North Korean restaurant. I didn't in Dandong but managed to visit ll the ones I could find open (and closed) in Beijing. Video for that coming out soon...

      Honestly it’s so true. When people say going to North Korea is like seeing a show and like watching from the outside, that’s what I felt here. Actually going to visit North Korea is nothing like that

    Thanks for the video Zoe. I can imagine that on the one hand you must have been happy to see the DPRK. But that on the other hand it's a bit frustrating to be so close but still not be able to revisit the country. I hope the DPRK opens up for visitors soon.

    The Yalu River cruise ship tour does not appear go as close to the Sinuiju shore as smaller power boat tours used to go when I visited 20 years ago. You can actually get closer to North Korea by visiting a place just north of Dandong by the Hushan Great Wall called "Yi Bu Kua" (一 步 跨) It is a small tributary off the Yalu with land that officially belongs to North Korea. Recently installed fences now prevent the literal "one step over" across the border at this point, but you can still see North Korean sentries and farmers up close.

    Are the ethnic Koreans in dandong North Koreans or South Koreans? And wow this is a good alternative to the dmz tour in sk! Very interesting stuff, thanks for posting

    • @ZoeDiscovers
      @ZoeDiscovers  Před rokem +4

      Yeah people tend to forget that there are several borders... Russia has one, too! The ethnic Koreans in China are mainly... Koreans. The time they've been in China far outlive the time of the existence of the borders separating the two. So there is less sense of "North Koreans" or "Sotuh Koreans", the ethnicity is simply 'Korean' (朝鲜族)

      Yanji is a better choice to feel the vibe of north korea. Half of population in Yanji are north korean. they were refugee during the korean wars, and settled in china. now they are chinese citizen, but they still hold their korean culture.

    As a question - you mentioned the ethnic Koreans who are Chinese citizens who live in Dandong.
    Does one see any signs of the ethnic Chinese who are DPRK citizens [Hwagyo] who have ties to Dandong ?

      @ZoeDiscovers  Před rokem

      Good question and can’t say I have. Or perhaps I haven’t realised. I’m sure there must be some doing business etc in Dandong and the other border regions

      @hongeast5174 Před rokem

      The Korean with Chinese citizenship and live in China in Dandong were refugees when Japan occupied Korea during 1895-1945. When Japan was defeated in 1945 some went back to NK, some left and were given Chinese citizenship. So simple answer is Yes, most of them have a very close NK connection.

    In all seriousness. When they give the guided tours for people visiting. How much of it is staged and propaganda? Especially like cities outside of Pyongyang

      @@jediobi6268 I’m asking a legitimate question because I don’t know. I’ve never been there. I never said it was staged or propaganda. I’m asking if it is. Keyword being “IF”.

    • @matthewriley3778
      @matthewriley3778 Před rokem

      none of it is staged. You’ve been fed American propaganda. American aggression is the reason the DPRK has its reputation.

    • @ZoeDiscovers
      @ZoeDiscovers  Před rokem +8

      Pretty much 0 of it is staged - but also depends what you count as staged. Of course, a performance at a school when they know you're visiting is staged but one might get the same welcome in other places too around the world. Basically very little is "just for you" and staged. It takes a whole lot of man power to stage things that it's like... may as well actually do it for real..!
