- We review the best-selling, Rolex of all time. A classic timeless example of the brands dedication to sophistication and functionality. Worn by countless world leaders and celebrities from Winston Churchill to Martin Luther King and movie appearances in films such as Wolf of Wall Street and American Psycho, this is the best Rolex you can buy. The Rolex Datejust 36 is the watch that changed history for being the world's first self-winding chronometer wristwatch to display the date of the month through a window on the dial and this has not changed despite remaining in production for more than three quarters of a century. This is the very best Rolex to buy!

Thanks for this Robert. Much appreciated and thanks for watching as always!
I've had a number of rolexes over the years, picking up this exact model in silver this weekend. In my opinion it's the best Rolex out there.
Love it. Thanks for watching.
Where did you buy it and do you mind sharing the price?
I have this watch as Datejust 41 jubilee. I LOVE this watch. I get so many compliments on this watch. Definitely a must have!
Love it as well. Classic!
Hey man great review keep posting planning on buying my first watch this review really helps.. thank you!
Thanks for the positive message, much appreciated. Thanks for watching.
I have exactly same one of those. I bought it in 2019. I still in love with it.
Good for you as great watch! Thanks for watching.
Always great work Erik keep it up
Thanks for watching again!
That was my first luxury watch I ever bought in 1993. Exact same configuration, blue face, jubilee bracelet, smooth bezel and stick markers.
Great watch, especially for a first! Thanks for watching.
That exact model is now shortlisted as my next acquisition, thanks to your review.
Great watch. Thanks for watching.
You convinced me to go to Smooth and jubilee, but in Mint green. Thank you!
Love that watch! Thanks for watching.
Just a pure classic! My preference is the fluted bezel with the jubilee, and the blue fluted motif dial if possible too! Otherwise I like the smooth bezel with the oyster bracelet. Gives two totally different looks to the DJ, a dressy/flashy version or a sporty everyday version. But definitely blue dial either way for me!
Yeah, love the blue with most any combo. Thanks for watching.
I have the same one of those. The reason why I bought are: Fluted bezel is too shiny; Explorer and OP are too quiet; 41mm DJ is not in good proportion (Submariner is good for 41mm not DJ); Blue dial is better than black or white dial; Jubilee is comfortable. So this DJ is perfect.
Good points. Thanks for watching.
That is a beautiful watch and 36mm is perfect, I’m over 6 feet and never thought it looked small, new to your channel and really enjoying it especially since I’m from Long Island
Thanks for the compliment. Om also over 6'. Thanks for watching.
This is the thread I’ve been looking for! I’m also a bigger bloke; why is the 36mm more suitable than the 41mm? It’s a nice watch, but I fear it’s a touch too small for us…
36mm is the only datejust.
The 40 is a big sporty watch. Looks okay. Different beast. Harrison Ford and Ronald Reagan never wore the 40mm.
@@TwentyOne_Five Agree and wish more didn't feel the need for a BIG watch. Thanks for watching.
What is your wrist size? I am 6'1" with 20cm / 7.87 inch wrist. Most of the time they have to add a link in order to fit my wrist. Except for my Omega Seamaster 300 which fit me perfectly out of the box.
Thank you for the review, I just put that same watch on my wish list at Rolex today. The only difference is i requested the 18k white gold fluted bezel..
Beautiful! Thanks for watching.
The oyster clasp has all the technical function of the oyster lock, it's just easier to use.
Yup, thanks for watching.
Amazing watch, one of my favorites! but you have to go for the mint green dial :)
My first watch that I ever bought was a steel date just with a white dial and roman numerals. Unfortunately, I had to sell it for the money when I was struggling. Never really regretted it, but every once in a while I wish I still had it.
Unfortunately, I have done the same. Most I dont really care but a few I would love to have back! Thanks for watching.
i've been there, but i wanna say, if you are doing better, consider getting another watch!
Great content!
Thanks for the compliment and of course, thanks for watching.
I love the smooth bezel because it still pops, makes the watch easier to wear daily and if it dents or scratches you can remove it unlike gold. It’s all steel except for gold indecies so better daily! Cool review
Thanks, I feel the same about the smooth. Easily removed with a Cape Cod Cloth. Thanks for watching.
@@erikkinginnycMost people criticizing these watches don’t own Rolex or are upset at the ADs. This configuration is blowing up and people need to see it in person to appreciate it.
I have an old one, a 1971 silver dail model with machined bezel. A classic of course.
But I’m stunned about the beauty of this blue dail. And I think the smooth bezel makes it look less as a “grandfathers watch”. Still, no one will doubt that it’s a Date Just.
Rolex has always been good at this. Development, but never at the cost of identity.
Agree about the bezel as I prefer the smooth too. Thanks for watching and commenting!
the green dial is also gorgeous.
Need that with the Oyster band and the band would need to be a subtle two tone band at that....
The Datejust was my one watch collection for 23 years until I sold the last one, which I regret to this day. Now with a collection of 8 watches I wanted to go back to the Datejust a couple years ago but the price was just too high. Went with an Aqua Terra instead, which is great, but I still miss the Datejust. It’s the only Rolex model I’ve ever owned. I had 3 of them over time. As you said, you can get different variations, which I did. Never had a blue one, very sharp.
Wow, nice. Thanks for watching!
I always tried to love the aqua terra. Bought two. Sold two. Thickness and bad bracelet made me fall out of love very quick.
I've a had a two-tone DJ (smooth, oyster, champagne dial) that I put in the safe deposit box after its last service 3 year ago...been wearing my Sub-C exclusively. I had thought about selling the DJ (which I bought new from an AD in 2014) over the years and I'm glad I didn't...for one they are hard to get, and two they are way more expensive now. I just retrieved it from the SD box and decided to wear and enjoy it.
Fantastic. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
100% agree with you though I’m still on the fence about a cyclops. As the owner of blue dial 3-6-9 OP version I think I’ve got the perfect watch.😉
I have the 41 smooth bezel white dial on an oyster and it’s the perfect everyday watch.
Love it. Thanks for watching.
Used to have the 36 mm on the oyster and wife thought it looked too small. I sold it and got a an explorer 40mm. Miss the watch sometimes. Might get the date just again this time on jubilee 40mm.
Love all the watches you mention and can't go wrong but yes, preference. I miss lots of watches that I sold. Thanks so much for watching.
This blue sunburst dial is actually better looking than the blue motif because of better legibility and that wonderful dial which is enhanced by the smooth bezel so no flashy shiney in your eyes l, just pure blue goodness
Love it as well. Thanks for watching
Great video and a amazing looking watch. What is your opinion on a jubilee bracelet, smooth bezzle, and black dial. Essentially the same just a different dial I just feel the jubilee bracelet gives it the dressier kind of pop to the watch but then the classic smooth bezzle dims it down a notch where you can wear that to a formal occasion, on casual occasions, etc.
Love the black face as well and feel the Jubilee is one of the best bracelets made. Following is a recent video of that watch in 41:
czcams.com/video/z4sOq-trLDs/video.htmlsi=b4L4Q6eeugS6t2EG
I’ve never seen a man look more like he should wear a DateJust.
I’ve had a few Rolex watches including DateJusts but never a blue.
Doing a PhD at the min so could be my treat when finished
That would be a great Doctorate gift to yourself. Lots of hard work. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@erikkinginnyc thanks. You twisted my arm, I’m getting one.
Stunning watch! Incredible value too at MSRP.
Totally agree! Thanks for watching.
Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for watching!
DJ36 is the GOAT. I have the DJ36 (fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet) with the blue-fluted motif dial and it is by far the coolest DJ36 available. the fluted-motif dials are next level.
Thats why they're the best seller ever for Rolex! Thanks for watching.
Congrats on getting that model.....I've was on the waiting list for over a year and a half and never got the call before they were discontinued. The AD in my town said they just didn't see that many of them...at all.
@@benfranklin3638 thanks man I appreciate! I think OPs and DJs are by order while the sport models are whatever trickles in
Do you think a 36mm Blue Datejust with Fluted Bezel at 7500 is a good deal?
@@ThomasRSmith-og7zo I think that it's too good to be true
Around 2:32-2:34 the second hand appears to skip around a little bit more than it should. Is this something to be concerned about?
No not at all. The reason you see that is my editing. There are quick edits that you really cant see except with the seconds hand. I edit out um's and aa's. Thanks for watching and calling that out as others can see as well.
I was thinking of getting a BB54 but after watching this video I am undecided whether to get a BB54 or not. Should I spend more money and get a Rolex DJ?
On the list for the silver dial, smooth bezel, oyster bracelet... l can't wait. The datejust is THE Rolex to buy
Agree as a beautiful all around lux watch. Thanks for watching.
Needed to hear this. Just yesterday picked up 41 mm Mint green dial, smooth on steel bracelet. Was having 2nd thoughts if should have gone with fluted bezel and jubilee. Was on the list for 2 years for Sub.
@@ashwanijoshi5199 it's all personal taste. For me the smooth bezel on oyster is just more versatile.. or even an OP .... it's down to you
Just a great watch. Thanks for watching.
One classic and timeless watch! Also, you look like Henry Wrinkler. 👍🏼
@@johnnguyen385 Yes it is exactly that. Have one of those faces that I always look like someone. Thanks so much for watching.
Jubilee-smooth bezel combo is just beautiful.
Agree, its the only way to go. Thanks for watching
I had the date just chocolate dial with oyster bracelet, but I flipped it 🙈gone one on order again 😊🤫❤️👍🏴
Nice watch and have flipped and regretted. Thanks for watching.
Same, but a 41, which is really more like 40. And an Oyster band. Every day for a long time. I don't want anything else.
Agree it actually is closer to 40. I prefer 39 for a sweet spot. Thanks for watching.
I had to rewatch this video because in the first attempt, I was eavesdrop on the Cantonese Chinese conversation heard in the background! LOL. I was just in that area and it is so vibrant and yes, Little Italy and Chinatown have their own way of handling things. Good people, good food, and it is my America.
Also, lovely watch! I hope John does not want it back any time soon!
Happy you liked and thanks for watching,,!
Great watch
Yes, it is and heritage to the max. Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated.
It is beautiful
Yes it is. Thanks for watching.
Pure class
Couldn't agree more. Thanks so much for watching.
After almost a year of waiting, yesterday I received the email from the Rolex dealer warning me that my dateJust reference has been discontinued😢🤦😩😑😡😠🤬😤
Didn't know that? Have to look into that ad lots of changes at Rolex. Thanks for watching.
No, I didn't know, because when I ordered the reference it was still in production.
What 5 numbers model is it? What year ?
126200 for this exact watch. Thanks for watching.
I have the DJ 36 fluted bezel on a jubilee bracelet and blue dial. LOVE IT. Great choice.
Yeah, the most timeless Rolex for sure. Thanks for watching!
If it has to be a Rolex, I would make the effort to buy one of the sport models. Because for the money of a date just, Omega Aquaterra and zenith defy are better options Imop.
Agree, especially with Zenith! Thanks for watching..
I have been contemplating between the fluted bezel and smooth one on jubilee bracelet. Well, after watching your video, I will go for the smooth bezel. Thank you Erik. :)
Yeah, I have to go smooth although so many recognize Rolex for Fluted. Thanks for watching.
This is the domed bezzel only available on the 36. Or else you wil get the flat smooth in the 41 model
Picked up a 41 Wimbledon, smooth and oyster. I passed on the fluted and jubilee. For me it was the right choice.
Beautiful Watch! Thanks for watching.
Nice choice
Thanks for watching.
Numerous watches, got a Datejust 3 months ago, and have only worn the DJ bar a couple of evenings that required a dress watch. The only watch as versatile is a Tank.
Love the Tank as well. Thanks for watching.
Should you get fluted or non fluted bezel?
Totally your choice but fluted bezel is more traditional and and as someone recently mentioned a "Grandad Feeling". I like the smooth. Both great but the fluted is definitely more blingy.
@@erikkinginnyc Did the first Datejust have a fluted bezel?
Yes, first was fluted and solid gold
@@erikkinginnyc Cool thanks
IMO The fluted is more dressy/flashy. The smooth makes for a better daily and versatile wearer, especially on the jubilee and with a good dial colour choice. Personally I like the blue, or mint green on the smooth/jubilee combo.
I think a Flutted Bezel DJ could go anywhere, from the beach to the board room.
Nice beater watch!
Certainly can be for the right person. No me.
Finally a macro view of the datejust. Thanks for the video!
Your welcome. Thanks for watching.
Can’t hear you over the music
🔥🔥🔥
Great watch, but not a chronograph, unless I miss heard?
You're right I misspoke. Meant Chronometer. Funny, never caught that until now. Thanks and thanks for watching.
He bought the right one beautiful
Yes, he did. Great piece. Thanks for watching!
Green dial is also gorgeous.
Very beautiful watch, classy and versatile, now from wanting a Tudor bb54 aka poor man,s Rolex😂 to desiring this one instead
Love the 54! Thanks for watching.
@1:55 "First self winding Chronograph" ??? 🤔
Wolf on Wall Street was a Tag Heuer.
American Psycho was a Seiko.
Yes, you're right DiCaprio's was a Tag, However, Matthew McConaughey wore a Datejust.
Two tone is the one
Thanks for watching
My thinking is that you should buy whichever Rolex you like, and don't buy the ones you don't like. Personally, I've always liked the Datejust, in many of its variations. They lose me once they start adding gemstones. That's too flashy for me.
Christian Bale wears a Seiko in American Psycho.
American Phseiko 😂
hahaha touché@@eddietrainer9386
Nice review! Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦🫡😎
Thanks for watching. Have a number of friends from South Africa as many in Hong Kong where I lived for a few years. All the best!
Well that's my choice got mine in 2023 from authorised dealer
Great watch. Thanks for watching.
Just not feeling it; there are watches in the same style I would take over a Datejust.
Also, given it's a top tier piece, you'd think they could do better than some cheap looking plastic box, that looks like it's out of the 90s.
Agree with packaging. Always, those funky plastic boxes. The watch and movement however are something special. Thanks for watching.
This is very nice, but not as nice as the President 36mm IMO. This is the Vice President. 😆
It's not a cronograph, it's a chronometer.
Already addressed this but yes, your on the money. Thanks for watching.
This watch is not actually an American psycho at least not worn by Christian Bale
It is Christmas, Let them stock, let tthem stock, let them stock.
Love to have Rolex have all the stock of all their watches but we both know that wont ever happen. This is definitely more accessable. Thanks for watching.
Obviously its all personal opinion BUT i honestly think the Omega Aqua Terra is a better overall watch than the Rolex.
The tech in the AT is in my opinion a better movement. Most dont deny that! Thanks for watching.
Aqua Terra definitely smokes it
I have a chance of buying the 36 Datejust with the scalloped bezel for 8500 Euro. Keep in mind I will get 19% Back at the Airport in Customs since US Residents aren't subject to the German 19% Value added Tax. So it will be roughly about 7200 Euro or about 7500 US Dollars. I am just afraid that it will be too small on my 7.87(20cm) wrist. I wish the store had a 41 but 36 is the only size they have. All my Omegas and Tag and Breitlings are in the 40 to 42 mm range. I will go back to the store tomorrow and try it on one more time.
Sounds like you like 40mm + from your watches and you don't have a small wrist. Probably happier with 41. I know it's tough when one is available from an AD but have to make sure your happy with it.
👌✅
$7700? Only? Wow
The day date is a meh for me. GMT is where it's at for me.
Yes, but very difficult to obtain a GMT. A day date is also a classic.
Yeah, love them bus yes, super hard to get and as stated the DD is the longest running model do something to that. Thanks for watching!
I want one but I'm poor and can't have one but I can still have a plastic watch ⌚😢
Hey, a 20 dollar digital watch is more accurate so doesn't matter. Its really a $ choice as no one actually NEEDS a Rolex. Thanks for watching.
DJ36 fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet is the only classic timeless example iconic Rolex you can and should buy. All other references are too much mutated from original DNA and no longer make sense to carry the Rolex logo.
Yes, that is the original. Thanks for watching.

36 is too small for me and the cyclops is … weird
@@hemantishwaran5741 Buy this one (if you can get it) czcams.com/video/z4sOq-trLDs/video.htmlsi=KcFySSXZwSj8l9qq

@@erikkinginnyc thanks. It’s 10K for a used which I can afford but I chose not too. I’ll wait until prices drop but thank you
Too bad they wont sell you one.
At times but much more available than others. Thanks for watching.
36 mm is too small 38 is minimum
Yes, some just dont line the 36 and its really a personal choice and of course wrist size. Thanks for watching.
Brand new and for sale? A flip?
Yes, a friends that decided he wanted an explorer 36 instead.
If you want to have only one Rolex, I would get the Submariner or the GMT Master II !!! Nothing else compares!!!
For me same - Sub. Thanks for watching.
OP is better
Has anyone's Rolex have hairline scratches?
Suggest you carry a firearm in today's climate...just saying
lmao the fake ac/dc song, can't lie, cringe move
No thanks. It's so ugly with that cyclops.
The Oyster Perpetual is way better.
I know the cyclops is divisive as love or hate. Thanks for watching!.
I’m sorry but this style of Rolex look like a cheap Sekonda
To each their own. I always buy what I like regardless of what others think. Thanks for watching.
Fingernails, borrowed watch,chronograph…. !!!!!
Get yourself a mans rolex buddy
36mm is THE Rolex size. What an ignorant comment
Are you insecure?
36 is too small for a man, I always try to convince myself that it’s a good size for a man but every time I try one, I’m more sure it.s not a man size
Rolex is so drunk on their own inbred design they can’t see how ridiculous it is. A cyclops lens - 1940s technology - still being used in 2023! The Japanese and Germans know how to innovate the size of the date window.
Sadly the Lange & Söhne big date watches look like being in the £30,00-£60,000 price range. Seiko and Citizen also have some cyclops lenses though.
You have a point but that's Rolex. Essentially unchanged for most models and just updates of materials - Ceramic etc. And let's not even speak about the Sprite - flip the watch around to make it left hand drive and put green and there you have it - a Sprite! I like all watches, but the Rolex Fan Boy Club is cult level. Thanks for watching!
I don't mind the cyclops but then again vision isn't what it was! I like the Citizen Fujitsubo a lot. Thanks for watching!
Cyclops lens still magnifies nowadays just as well as in the 1940s. Makes it readable.
it looks like a lady's watch
Smooth bezel DJ is just so crap imo
To each there own but I find many dont like the fluted, gem set etc. I do agree the fluted is the original and looks mote like a DJ. Thanks for watching.
@@erikkinginnyc yeah I think if you want smooth just get an OP or an explorer 1. And good video mate.
The fluted is screaming pretentious, i tried both and couldn’t stand the huge shine and shimmers for that fluted bezel
@@mohnnadmercedes8246 it’s been the configuration of the DJ since its inception so how does that even make sense? There’s at least 5 other models made for smooth bezel why not get one of those instead. When I see smooth bezel especially smooth on an oyster I just think you couldn’t afford fluted on jubilee
The modern fluted bezels are extremely loud and flashy. The old ones were more subtle and classy.
it`s an ok watch not spectacular as you portrait it to be!
