Truer words have never been spoken. Never really had time for MO. Just wasn't into him. Watched a vid and thought OMG! Totally influenced by GG! I like MO now. It's uncanny how good he is!!
@vanguard4065 gurhrie had his his 1st album out at 19 years old with all his best stuff on it. Open for opinion but guthries skills were off the scale at a young age. As is Max who is phenomenon player
I Love both, and try to study both. It’s not really a fair comparison as GG has 30 years more guitar under his belt. But with that said, the thing that impresses me more about GG is that you can go see him play a 2+ hour set live, and he will give you everything. Away from the comfort of his home, and still blow you away with funky songs, jazzy songs, shreddy songs - utilizing everything imaginable. Max is versatile and great live too! (Videos of him in high school playing Yngwie). But we really haven’t seen Max get up there live for 2 hours and play a plethora of different things for an audience. I’m sure he will in the near future, but at this point, Guthrie impresses me more. And no shame of course - Guthrie has been playing for 30 years longer!
@@BartholomewBarnacleFerguson he uses the same licks and style of playing fusion, so he's for sure a massive influence, ofc not the only one, but definitely one of them
@@old_man_with_cane3407not at all, i know cuz i play guitar and im tone sensitive been playing more than 80% of the commentors here so i know more than tham that there is no soundscape of vai or malm in Max's playing but alot of guthrie and other jazz guitarists but not malmsteen and vai.
The fact that Max is barely a young man still , and is even being compared is a huge compliment. Imagine when he’s been playing for another 20 years like Guthrie?? Both BEASTS.
Guthrie. I mean you can hear so much of Guthrie in Max's playing. Max is an amazing guitarist, but Guthrie is in a league of his own. Guthrie is THE BEST player you will ever hear. Not only is it improvised. It's real musical ideas on the fly. His brain just works on another level. When Guthrie is improving on stage, he puts every single great guitarist he's up there with to shame. Petrucci, Abasi, Paul Gilbert, the dream catcher event.. You name a player and Guthrie just has their number. He can do it all. Guthrie is special.
@jambertin54 do you listen to.Vai??? I hear Vai in Ostro's legato style play as well as his timing, artificial harmonics, and modal approach to some of his solos.
@jambertin54 I have been listening to Vai since his Alcatraz days and have seen him play live many many times. I hear Vai influence with Malmsteen and Paul Gilbert. You may hear something different and that is your opinion as i have mine.
Max is still a student. Now he may be PhD Honours scholarship student with his picture in the main hall for achiever of the year. But Guthrie is the professor.
@@BartholomewBarnacleFerguson I have no shortage of appreciation for Max's playing but somehow I can't warm to him. To put it in words he lacks some emotional substance for me, a certain element of feel or phrasing, not super sure but I don't get excited at all listening.

it’s an interesting conversation though. One is the most technically proficient guitarist on the planet. The other rips solos that are so addictive, they should be illegal. Maybe the video is asking who we prefer more than it is asking us “who’s better?” The title is very mysterious. Lol
Guthrie. It’s crazy that we live with someone whose probably the greatest at his instrument that we’ve ever seen. Guthrie is a machine. He plays with so much feel too. To be that technically flawless and that compositionally great is so rare. Guthrie is a treasure we need to prop up more.
Out of the two examples i liked max's solo more. It wasn't just fast but it has feeling and the notes he was hitting were juicy and meaningful. I just like where he went with his melody out of these two examples
I've been privileged to see Guthrie live three times, from just feet away. Second and third times were with The Aristocrats. First time was with Steven Wilson and even though I was there to see Guthrie, I was so mesmerized by Marco Minnemann I kind of forgot Guthrie was even there! LOL.
Everyone is stuck on technic. Music is like the art of cooking. 1. You can cook a lot without spices, because you have raw materials - see mid-range and still run musicians. 2. You can have a very varied set of spices, but if you over-spice your food, it becomes unenjoyable. See sports guitarists mainly on youtube. There are plenty of them. 3. You can make small tastings with lots of spices, like in an elite restaurant, but they will only remain separate tasty bites. See Max. 4. It is possible to cook properly nutritious food with the right seasoning, without over-flavoring, with a high degree of sophistication, which is both nutritious and very delicious at the same time. See Satriani, Greg Howe, Mark Knopfler, etc. Guthrie is the chef who can cook something extra in any restaurant, but it may not be digestible for everyone. Everyone should decide who they want to eat with and whether they just want to have a snack or eat their fill. You don't have to agree with me.
Guthrie is known to be his great role model. It's the new generation. He plays brilliant guitar, but Guthrie is much more flexible, he plays less synth-sounding and more articulated. But Ostro is still so young and for this reason I think he will probably be in the top 3 of the best guitarists in 10 years!
Both of these men are in the same league in my humble opinion. Max is clearly early in his career-- Guthrie is like the master of all masters. I kind of think of it like early Picasso versus older Picasso.
Love both! Extremely talented. Guthrie has lived way longer than Max, thus more experience. But Max is an amazing player and still has so much more to offer in the coming years.
GG has that extra touch of authenticity that speaks to his motto of quality and feel over technique. Even though the technique is flawless... the feel and justice to the song come first. Max is a phenom though. I just feel that extra touch of real with GG.
Guthrie plays with a distinct influence of gained life experiences. Max plays with a fluidity of water without the distractions of life an older player carries with them. Still carefree. Whats expected of you by others impacts your playing whether you're aware of it or not.
Não tenho guitarrista por estimação, porem Max Ostro me surpriende porque toca taõ bem quanto Guthrie e mais limpo. Max influenciou até mesmo Kiko Loreiro. pois o mesmo comenta em um podcast.
Guthrie is unbelievable. Hands down a god of the instrument. Max isn't even in his final form yet and is making huge waves. I'm genuinely excited for his career. 🎸🎸
I believe that the real test is not in front of a camera but live on stage in front of audience. Therefore for this specific comparison Guthrie is my choice.
Something too many guitarists forgo these days is getting a complete understanding of blues. Not just the patterns, but the general vibe. I used to play only metal stuff like arpeggios and modes, but I got depressed after a while because nothing I was doing had any real soul in it. So I did like a blues boot camp for a couple of years and it worked. It’s not like I sit around listening to or even playing blues music, it just became a philosophy to put some stank on bends, leave edges rough, and to think in between semitones. Nobody cares about how sterile you can play, except for other guitar nerds. If you want the ear of the public you gotta be real and raw. That’s blues 😎. So yea, Guthrie.
The grooves are so different, not exactly a 'fair' comparison. They're both killing it, but on the blues side, Guthrie's expression takes on a much more powerful emotional dimension you absolutely hear, see and feel.
I prefer the more subtle approach of Max. Guthrie is a little too shreddy and aggressive sometimes. Max has the perfect feel for my ears and more memorable solos.
GG is the goat, but Max gives me more of what I want to hear. There's some voodoo going on with max that is undeniable. That fact that we're even making the comparison speaks volumes for Max. I don't think he's a GG clone either
The solos we hear from Max are prepared, that's why there is so much harmony, Guthrie is unpredictable, always improvising, that's why we put both of them on stage to improvise, Guthrie crushes Max, he has more resources and above all more creativity when he improvises. much more than Max that when he improvises he is nothing more than a crusher
Max and Guthrie usually do a few improvised takes and pick the best. I know this because not only has JTC mentioned this in a comment on a Guthrie video, but Max has also mentioned this too about himself. Max has also improvised everything since 2020. Guthrie is a phenomenal guitarist and great improviser but I personally prefer Max’s improvisations and overall playing over Guthrie’s. Just my personal taste. They are extremely different if one takes the time to listen to both thoroughly. A pretty good example of that is to compare both of their takes of “groove on”. For me, Max delivers more memorable solos. His playing is subtle, never overly aggressive, and almost always easy on the ears. He’s not an in your face chicken picken pinch harmonic squealing sweep picking maniac. lol He doesn’t even tap a lot. I really like that about him. He doesn’t overdo anything. He finds the perfect balance. ✌🏻
Without Guthrie, Max wouldn't play the way he does. Guthrie's influence on him is just so evident.
