Unrealistic singing. Total control with highs & low, and there’s a lot here. Tell any of the new singers to sing this and they’ll fail miserably. This is one tough song sung by a legend. Respect ✊

This happens every other day even today....there will never be anyone like Kishore-da.

Every composition of Salil Chowdhury has his signature on it. This one is among his best. The lyrics, too, have the distinct style of songwriter Yogesh who always penned classy poetry. But the surprise of the song is Kishore Kumar. This is not his typical tune (in fact, none of SC tunes was typical for any singer) but he did full justice to it, making it a memorable song. Extra marks to Asit Sen for filming it in a simple but beautiful setting.

It seems Kishoreda was reluctant to sing this song as he could not grasp the tune, he eventually rehearsed it for two days-22 times . The end result was fantastic.

This is probably one of the finest of Kishore Kumar & SalilDa collaboration. Its not easy to sing this. Trying to catch the opening note of each line is so darn difficult. If you have tried singing this, you'll know. Story has it, Kishore Kumar did a lot of retake to record this. Salil Da was genius of course. Annadata is definitely his best Bollywood work, ever!
Actually it is not that difficult song. It is very chord based song. Once you understand the chord progression it becomes quite easy to sing or play. It is in the key of Gm and then on each line Salilda is just using the notes of a chord.
No offense. This song is fantastic but this is no where close to salil da;s best. Madhumati takes the cake easily. So many classics from Lata ji, Mukesh da and of course Rafi.

This song is a throwback to innocent years in the 60s and 70s, when life was simple, aspirations were small and society was much more progressive and tolerant than today.
The beauty of SC is that each song could be sung in multiple languages. As for KishoreDa, this is one of his most difficult songs but he has done full justice to it.

This is an amzing composition by Salil Da; KIshore's rendition is also superb and one of his best songs. Ironically Kishore wanted to avoid singing this song as he thought he could never sing it the way Salil Da wanted him to sing. He completed this one after multiple takes and in the end we have a gem of a creation. I do not blame today's singers; but don't think anyone will hazard a try!!!

Thanks for the pointer to the Bengali version, Biswarup. Can you tell us which was the original - the Hindi or the Bengali version? Knowing the trend, I can bet it was the Bengali. Whichever it is, I think that Salilda has done a magnificent job with the more sophisticated orchestra of the Hindi version.

Salil da's wife, Sabita, said in an interview that after listening to the tune for the first time from Salil Chowdhury, Kishore Kumar in his characteristically funny style, just sat down on the floor of Salil da's house and demanded that he make the tune easier for him to sing. "Otherwise", declared Kishore da, "I am not going to get up from the floor or go anywhere". Gone are those days when geniuses indulged in such childish fun and enjoyment without letting their minds be overweighed by competitive and materialistic considerations!!!

I heard it during my college life in 1997. my frnd accidently saw it for the first time on DD and he immediately informed me about this beautiful song. Those were the days without internet and we have to wait eternally and rely on our luck to listen the song again. Luckily few days later i heard this song on radio and since then its one of my all time favourite songs.

Initially Kishore Kumar had declined from singing this song due to the pitch variations. And Salil Chowdhury was determined that it's either Kishore Kumar or none. He went to the extent of keeping the song shelved if Kishore Kumar had not sung. However, after much of Salil Chowdhury's persuasion Kishore Kumar gave it a go. And, it became a "one take" history.
This song needed 18 takes not 1. It's a very difficult song bearing the stamp of the genius of Salil Chowdhury.

May be that is beauty of such classic works of art : masters like Kishore sahib and Sailil Sahib gave it such an easy feel. It has something to like/ enjoy for those folks who can see fine points about tune and all that; it also has a lot of simple folks like me who just want to enjoy it for what it is : a great simple song.
