Friends don't let friends speed in Virginia
Keep it under 80 and dont change lanes too much and you're solid.
Agreed, but I've been here all my life, I've figured out some good sweet spots to get away with a lot, however to date I have 11 speeding tickets in NVA alone which i'm not proud of BUT have managed to keep my license :). P. S. In my experience, the State cops are a hell of a lot nicer than any of the county police that have stopped me, one bit of back talk to a county, they damn near wanna yank you out of the car.
It's definitely not for lovers haha
ESPECIALLY on Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel!
@@h33ls_up yeah the county police, especially in Northern VA are pretty surly if you get cute with them.
My 47-year-old station wagon broke down 35 years ago
That's unfortunate. Must not have been an AMC haha
Certainly not a 258 powered one. It's almost impossible to destroy a 258.
This really hits right into my soul. My wife and I married in 1974, and I enlisted in the USAF in 1975. In 1976 my first duty station was in Sacramento at the now defunct McClellan AFB. We bought a brand new yellow1976 Hornet Sportabout with vinyl imitation wood panel inserts. My Father-in-law made a custom plywood luggage carrier with marine spar varnish and we drove it from Rome, Georgia non stop to Sacramento, California. It was quite a kick in the heart to see my drop dead beautiful bride driving with purpose down the highway. Two years later we drove it back to Rome and sold it to head overseas. I don't remember the time we took getting to Sacramento or the time going back but driving straight through it couldn't been much over that early record. My wife and a couple of months ago we reached our forty-ninth wedding anniversary. Thanks for the memories this brought.
I'm a cop. Even cops warn cops about Virginia cops.
no shit right
Reese Holder, Virginia is for asshole cops
Shit!
The Mechanix I love my college but I’m so scared Bc my college is in Virginia 😬
ExvitaTM
You’d get pulled over for glancing over at a cop
Those AMC I6 engines are invincible.
Hell yeah most inline motors are unkillable
The AMC 4-cylinders are quite tough as well.
Iron block with iron heads. Overheating slows it down but won't kill it. After fixing the cooling it'll continue running like it never happened.
That's why jeeps were so good
He blew it up a bit ago lol. But yah I love them
Back in the mid nineties I drove from Ft. Lewis Wa to Indiana in just under 21 hours. Only stopping for fuel, which was often, and only slowing for the occasional construction zone. Surprisingly enough, the only cop I saw the entire drive was in Montana. At the time there was an open speed limit. I had it pegged at 140 most of the time through there. When I spotted him on the horizon I let up very briefly, remembered the no speed limit, floored it, passed him doing 120. That was pretty awesome.
This channel (and Ed) are responsible for my new found obsession in cannonball racing! Thanks guys lol 😂
Brad Carpenter same! What a fantastically irresponsible endeavor. I love it.
Mine too
Same lol
I’d kind of purposely avoided the VINwiki Cannonball videos until now, but this was terrific. I’ll probably watch them all now! ;-)
SAME!!!!! Me and the Wife r wanting to do the cannonball next yr for my Bday. all of the stories are Amazing!! hoping I can create my own story!
Just saw this wagon on the road in Bremerton Washington yesterday. Funny I now get this as a recommendation. Definitely caught my attention
Wow! I wish I had these kinds of opportunities :)
Jacob ought to seal in that patina like the ICON × 1949 Mercury car.
All girls are the same
If Johnathan Ward from ICON saw you say that he'd be insulted. They don't clear any of the Derelicts, they're just raw Patina.
@@Serps-ii9zc RIP. Thought they sealed Patina so that it wouldn't rust to bits over time
@@joshbromley866 I am a male. I... What? Are you being sexist or something?
Last video for this year. Can’t wait to see what next year Vinwiki comes up with.
Huge supporter of Jacob and love the way he got his dream job!
Would be great to see some guest appearances @ FSM!
The title says it like everyone has a 47 year old station wagon
That is the most beautiful car I've never heard of
I wholeheartedly agree my friend
Just needs some deeper dished steelies for the back rims.
The current ones don't do it justice.
Wow sounds like that radiator took "alotta damage", I legitimately wonder if flex seal could have helped
Too much time to properly cure flex seal- plus the 15psi at temp•,
I was wondering if the Hornet would be VINWiki worthy or not.
It most certainly is.
Ahem! That’s the Green Hornét!
neong w
Sounds like my buddy and his '64 Rambler wagon gasser. Cool stuff guys, keep it coming.
If only I hadn't had a standard tank, rookie error!!!
Great run and story Jacob.
My best friend and I are planning to drive the cannonball run route over the summer after we graduate. We aren’t going all crazy and going after records and having extra gas tanks. We are just going to drive the route and count our time. Thanks to this channel for being a great inspiration
Sam From Ohio I'm doing it this summer after I graduate also in an 86 mazda b2000 with a bad fuel pump and a rust hole in the floorboard big enough to drop a watermelon through
I love this story! When I was growing up in the 70's and 80's we had a green hornet also! Out of the few annoying problems that we consistently had, it always managed to survive radiator leaks and overheating. With all of the trips we would take up and down the east coast, it would occasionally break down but it wouldn't die.
I want to do a Cannonball I just found a 1986 Porsche 928s for $3000
Great find!
That's a nice one
Well, after you spend $12,000-$20,000 in parts to make that v-8 run right, you might make it. There’s a reason 928s are so cheap, and it’s NOT because they’re reliable or inexpensive to operate.
Michael James true. The 928 was the reason I bought a 944 but man, the 928. Still on my mind.
Michael James how about a Manual 280ZX for $2k?
The green hornay nice to hear about it again.
Dam, last time i was this early ed's mercedes was still leaking fuel on everyones clothes
I NEED THAT SHIRT!!
Please tell me where I can get it! I looked all over!!
I would be pissed if both dudes that are supposed to be my “co-drivers” refuse to drive fast while doing the Cannonball!! Lol
Happy new years from Australia
Elo Fan plus woooohooooo 🇦🇺straya for the win
Tyre Frying Rubber flying I'm Brisbane
Thanks! Best of luck in all you do in 2019.
Thx ed thank you
Ed Bolian thank you for all amazing story’s you have given us in 2018. I look forward to so many more from your memory bank have a great new year to you and all of your family 🍺🍻🥃
I love Cannonball stories!!!
One Hell of a Trip.
That was a really good story! Very well said. Those old straight six motors are die hard! Thanks for posting.
From an Eagle owner: Assuming your Hornet and my Eagle are the same, which I bet they are... Jeep XJ rear springs are a direct bolt in (other than the spring bushing eyelets needing opened up a size to 9/16, I think), higher rate, and allow you to install XJ add-a-leafs pretty easily. My Eagle, without the extra 40 gallons of gas in the back, gained about 2.5" from all of that (versus whipped springs).
Jacob is one of the most genuine, nicest car dudes and the hornét is awesome!
Last time I was this early, Lisa's Dad could still have nice things.
Last time I was this early that was still a lame, shitcan joke
I slammed the Oil pan and the bottom of the bell housing into a railroad track from airborne. smashed the bellhousing, crushed the oil pan. No oil. No transmission fluid. No coolant. I drove that thing for 16 miles/25km at 30kph (fast as i dare with pieces of the casing dancing off the flywheel making noises no engine should ever make) all the way home. My AMC spirit got me home. Those engines are the most beautiful magical pieces of machinery ever made. I have no idea how they can keep going under circumstances like that but nobody has ever made a better engine than the 4.3L I6 258ci.
Had '70 AMC Hornet, he's right those AMC/Jeep inline 6's were indestructible.
I keep being sold on the cannonball. One day.
Gearbhall my dream!!
Virginia resident checking in! DON'T SPEED IN VA. Ya gon' have a bad time.
So if the engine is coming back out. I'd love to see a 4.0 l build up outta a jeep. you can use the 258 crank an rods an make a 4.6. It gives you a better flowing head an the opportunity for fuel injection an a supercharger setup. 😬
Great story. Best of luck on the next run!
I grew up near Tysons, VA and went to school in Richmond, VA - with 109 mile stretch of i95 separating the 2 cities. Before knowing about VA cops, my college roommate and I made the trip RVA - NOVA in his 06 Sonata in an astonishing 59 minutes. Next trip - he got pulled going 112 in a 70 at 3am. (He is a lawyer now and has put this behind him) I wasn't willing to challenge his time in my Fiesta ST and doubt anyone ever will. Glad to know what we were up against tho
2:28 "no dubstep!!!" lol
Great story teller! Thanks!
in like 2003/2004 I had a 78 AMC Concord wagon with the 258 straight six and drove that thing in and around Chicago highways and to and from WI as my commuter for 3 years straight. I put one used tire on it, an 11 dollar outer tie rod and a 20 dollar water pump. That car only cost me $100 bucks. I still contend that was the best money I have EVER spent and probably the best car I have ever owned. It even lasted another year after giving it to my brother's then girlfriend for her first car. I dearly miss that turd :(
Fantastic story, great way to end 2018 on a high note!
I live in VA... Anything over 80 is reckless driving even if the speed limit is 75.....
JUDD MILLER, why don’t you tell them about radar detectors too.
I recently made a trip up and down through VA (FL to PA and back), and my comfort zone was about 80. We hit VA, saw all the signs, and I just set cruise for 79. Fucking hate that state, so much BS.
Many years ago we got stopped for having dark window tint, the cop wanted to give us a hard time and my dad is borderline about to punch the cop in the head because he will not comprehend that the car is licensed in a state 700 miles away where that level of tint is far from illegal.
How does it feel to live in a state with a traffic mafia - racketeering scheme
@@glurak888 I'm happier here with strict driving laws then I would be in states that take away my constitutional rights like California New York New Jersey Maryland........ You get the point...
Anything over 55 here
last time i was this early lisas 300zx wasnt being used as a wheelchock
WASNTED
J L lol stupid auto-correct must be spelling at a 4th grade level. edit: there i fixed it
I wouldn't expect anything less from that car
That’s awesome! Jacob made it to vinwiki.
The gallon of antifreeze on the pax floorwell... epic...! :)
Great story teller!
Radiator stop leak has always been sketchy but its saved me several times when i hit deer several states away from home
This one and the AMC hatchback look pretty awesome. Happy New Year VINWiki !
Wow what a great old straight 6 to take that punishment and ask for more I am very impressed thanks for sharing
A Word to the Wise ... Only add water / coolant to a hot engine while running... You really did have the little engine that could
Many Blessings , SMR
"the car may have been air-cooled there for a minute"
oof
Yes the Hornet station wagon
Man I miss American station wagons
Man, I love the stuff outta station wagons! I really want Vista Cruiser!
reminds me of a trip i was on in a turbo b16 swapped 95 civic... a hole melted in the radiator on the way to honda day and the car drove for 2 hours without a drop of coolant in it with no problems other than the spark plug wires melting in the holes. We replaced the radiator with an all-aluminum mishimoto one from their booth, changed the oil, plug wires and plugs in the parking lot of englishtown, and the car boosted the whole way home with no problems
That's the beauty of an iron block and iron head.
After mods that AMC became a pinto
Ha
those old strait sixes are so bulletproof amazing how much abuses they can take without failing especially the Mopar slant six and the AMC six really tough engine indeed !
Love me some AMC! Had a '75 Sportabout back in the day! Great car!!! Nicely done man!

I’ve already heard this story on the muscle car place podcast. But it’s great to hear it again. Btw Ed you need to get Rob Kibbie on your show and you need to go on his .
Happy new year!
Classic piece.
5:07 thats the trick. greetings from germany
I love Thunderbird Supercoupes, but if your temp needle points past the "M" in "NORM" (so just a little past center) you are supposed to address the issue or risk head gasket issues.
Wow. Congrats on your run! You've gotta be a road warrior to do these kind of races and to do it without getting caught by the cops is like winning the lottery. I'd be afraid to do more than 90 for a few minutes at a time.
@9:06 every time I see a Forward Air truck I think of the time I drafted with one on I-75 from just outside Tampa to the GA line. Speedo never dipped below 80mph, good times!
You did 1/4 of the run with a grenaded fan and a busted radiator in the middle of the desert. You should be proud of yourself.
This video ends in the new year for me!!!
Ha - was wondering what happened to that car after he left GA for CA.
Those old inline 6 engines are amazingly durable.
I remember watching this car on the hoonigans!
I had almost the same story about Virginia. 85 in a 60 and in a f150. The cop wasn't going to give us a ticket until he saw my grandfather's liscence was expired.
I have a sister who had a friend that drove an old station wagon. I have no idea what it was, but it had an inline 6.
One day, I don't know why, my family asked to check out the engine.
They looked at the oil. It was low.
They looked at the radiator. It was dry.
2 or 3 quarts of oil in the engine, and multiple gallons of coolant in the radiator and everything was topped off.
The person had NO idea this was needed! The engine ran fine, and it was his daily driver!
Finnegan's Garage! Fuck yea! Next up: Finnegan & Freiburger!
Love me some old wagons. Had a 61 Chrysler Newport and loved that thing. Miss it dearly. Only classic better is old cop cars.
Happy new year 🇦🇺🇦🇺🚙💨💨
HAPPY NEWYEARS!
My Grandfather, Floyd Kishline, who designed that engine, also designed the engine for another reliable vehicle in 1938 called the Jeep. He was quite a guy and the stories get better the deeper you go.
The 6 dislikes didnt get the invite
Interesting to see he fitted a rev counter to an automatic! Anyone tell me the benefit or use of it?
Happy new year ED
Impressive like to dislike ratio
Scarea it would be a shame if someone..
I could only imagine the dislikes are solely fat fingers trying to hit the Like button too fast.
its normal for this channel!
And doIng this with a roadkill sticker on the car you’re a legend
I love that wagon
I'm gonna need that station wagon.
Too bad haha
Damn. I just made a 10 hr drive, two days after Xmas. Trying to imagine a trip 3.5 times that long... Hmmm
lmao it got so hot it forge-welded itself back together.
you got a job a hot rod magazine, and didnt even know what the cannonball run was? holy crap
Being from NJ , and having a summer home in VA... we learned in the early 90s that VA cops are ruthless... and they implement the "radar detector , detector" ... we had a hardwired one...and they made my pops remove the fuse. lol
i need to do this run. ever since ive herd about it..ive done nothing but think about it.
An educated guess it Looks like you got pulled over by the Carroll Co Sheriff's office, near fancy gap va.....On I 77.... How good is my guess?
Andy J Are you the cop that pulled them over?
@@kasper5688 Nope, but im native to that area, travel that section of interstate almost daily, and I am acutely aware of just how intense they operate on the section of that I-77. And the photo of the deputy, sign, and ridge in the background are a dead ringer for that section of road.
@@kasper5688 Here is the section of road I am thinking of, on Google street view... The sign is damaged in the street view photo..The speed trap is about a mile away. goo.gl/maps/iDEH6j44CWt
I see all these speeding stories, and then remember our Aussie speeding laws......
Streight 6 engine ..is love
Hey I'm from coweta GA. cool to see that license plate
I need that Gremlin 10 seconds in there. Dad got me my first 74 X as my first car from auction.
Well you finished 🏁that's All that really matters. Do you think a Yugo coulda done it as well?
I used to knock AMC, till I realized how EZ they were to work on. And a mix of off the shelf parts that could keep them running.
" reinstall nos " lol
A good car won't stay down may run slower but still run.
The Green Hornét!
