Fantastic work!!! This is really helpful. I'm another one of those crazy people trying to do the exact same thing. I'm also kitbashing a second freightliner with a 1/60 Gundam exia for my very own matching G1 robot prime
Heya John!! Thanks! Hope the gundam turns out well, that sounds like a fun build!! If you dig this, I turned this model into the robot mode too, check that one out, that was super fun to do!
You would think that with the size and complexity of a big rig kit AMT would have made a proper instruction manual for 2021 with the parts correctly numbered, a logical build process, correct color call-outs and not leave out needed parts but they are just riding the coat tails of nostalgia. What was passable in 1976 doesn't cut-the-mustard today and they should have realized this, I think your build turned out quite nice, love the fact you did Optimus Prime, very cool!
Heya Max!! Yeah, you'd think that, but no. There are those cats out there that actually WANT the retro instructions, don't ask me why. Lol. Thanks, this was a labor of love, and frustration.
The Cummins engine was a tan beige color. When Cummins changed from the NTC platform to the N14 they paint black with red rocker box covers. Now most of their engines are painted all red. The kit looks great 👍
Heya Mark! Thats the kind of thing I like to hear, interesting tid bits on what/when stuff like that changed! Thanks for the information and thanks for watching!
Heya Larry, yeah I know, blame google image search. All it gave me were engines in that green. Should have trusted my instincts and went with tan. Next time I will. Thanks for watching!
Nice job, amt trucks leave a lot to be desired when building them, ie; instructions, fitment , warping etc. But when you persevere like you did , the results are well worth it. Again great job!
Thanks, Lord Vader, and on camera it's easy to be calm and patience. There were a few times I turned the air blue on this build. But it was fun, and I'll be doing another one, sort of, some time in the future.
You are dead-on right about the Round 2 instruction sheets. They are terrible. They were carried over from the AMT/Ertl days, never updated, never changed. "Vague" is the word most often used to describe these things, and I'll bet that more than a few hobbyists have been driven from truck assembly because of them.
Engine looks great as dose everything else you've done on it! I'm going to be building that kit but maybe single drive my question is what green did you use for the engine thanks.
Yea, on the back leave spring sides it has two small arms with a notch i did figure it out finally i just cut away some material so it would glue flat to the sides its called radius arms, yea i started in the center with the two cross members then worked outward useing testers glue and making sure the fram sat flatvon the table it sits really good on mine as I used the long frame like yours as my kit is the 2 and 1 kit im going with the c&f scheme. I subscribed to your channel too
Oh yeah, now I remember, had the same issue. Had to do that too. You may have some issues with the engine mount as well, I wish I would have stuck that in between the rails as u was building it. Cab gave me issues also, might want to take some sand paper to the outside of the interior. When I stuck it in I cracked the cab because it was so tight.
Thanks im going to try to put the engine together tomaro il prob have the same problem as you did,il let you all know how it it went, those pipes look confusing to. I havent built a semi in a long time thought i would start with the freight liner first then build some of my my macks.
Interesting. I'm guessing the commercial grade was the tan from what everyone's told me. I must have stumbled upon pictures of the Detroit version. Thanks for the info Leroy!
I have a 1984 Peterbilt 359 XXHD with 475 horse Twin Turbo engine in Bright White. White was orignal color for the 3406 V8 Cat And yellow was the option For my Cummins it was Tan or White.
Maybe? I just did a google image search for Cummings engine cabover 1984 and every one I saw was that green. Now that I know better the next one will be in the tan or yellow.
@@PunkyWily The kit engine is a 60s-70s vintage Cummins NHC 250 replica, it has no turbo, or aftercooler. they were factory "Old Gold" or later Beige/Tan . by the 1980s turbos and aftercoolers were pretty much standard for all big rig engines. Some truck manufacturers would paint the engines a custom color for customers request. btw the engine looks nice.
@@drebpipley1 Good to know! I'm a car guy mainly, so when it comes to trucks its my best guess. Thanks for the info, now lets see if I remember this the next time I build a rig! ha!
Sorry, no, he was most defiantly a Freightliner. If you look at the G1 toy you can tell, the grill on '70's and '80's Peterbilt's are completely different from Freightliners. Op's G1 grill is very much a Freightliner grill.
Wrong that's a old 220 cummins they were tan some of the older ones were red my dad owned a 220 he also had a 671 detroit it was a bluish green that was in ine early 60s
Yeah, I know that now. See when you do a google image search for 1980s Cummins engines you expect that's what they are showing you. I really miss the days when you'd search google and it actually gave you accurate findings.

Thanks again Mike! I have to admit my shortcomings, I'm not a semi guy. Not that I don't love them, just that I don't have much knowledge of their inner workings.
@@PunkyWily that's ok there's people that should and don't know like the model maker's I just wanted to pass the info to you you're really good at assembly and painting then I am thank you
What a shame...AMT makes such incredible great stuff..but the instructions are a real nightmare...it should be a cheap fix to produce high quality instructions..if they did that Im not sure they could keep up with the demand given the quality if their kits..
This was a reissue and they didn't bother updating, most of the kits they have reissued have the same problem. The kit itself is awesome, nothing against it, just wish they would put in some extra effort and updated the manual.
hello. you are talking about t he same crap with this kit, tyhat i am dealign with too! yeah, these kits arent really that fantastic to build, directions pretty much suck and tha parts could be better! 2
I wouldn't doubt it. Every time I've seen someone build this model they all have the same issues. Bad fits, bad directions. But you'll make it through, have faith in your skills. Bright side, once you're done you never have to do it again!!
Very accurate description of the instructions.
Nice build!!

Looks sweet, yes these are old kids that otherwise would be forgotten, I guess it is like buying an old car, tech wasn't as good.
Heya Andres! Yeah, they are just like old cars tech wise. These days I just see old kits as a challenge. Thanks for watching!

You should show an all around view of the truck
I could do that, never really showed "Prime" off in detail. He's a bit dusty these days.
How about adding burnt oil to create the truck smell?
Hi, im having troubles with the frame radius rods 🤷♂️
Hey David, what is the issue you are having? I remember it was kind of a pain getting that frame plum.
the cab should be one peice, really!!
It really should, that seam that's created is a serious pain in the tailpipe.
How do you do the stripes
The stripes were decals. I did them one side at a time and very carefully. Used lots of water too.
Where did you get the decals at
@@wyattlittle4400 they came with the kit. This is the reissue that came out a few years ago so if you have the original you won't have them.
